Honestly, I'd prefer a minimal amount of drama. Alfor was clearly trying to protect Allura from whatever was up with Zarkon, hence the forced stasis. My guess is he may have left her out of the loop on a few important details, worried that she'd act rashly. Allura seemed puzzled when Zarkon explained that her father knew how important it was that Voltron stay out of his hands.

Well, it's been some time since I've really watched the original, so I'm by no means an expert. But the biggest difference that comes to mind is the fact that Sven/Shirodies in the 6th episode. And Princess Allura/Fala replaces him as the pilot of the blue lion.
Keith is the leader of the team from the very start and pilots the black lion. And isn't a loner woobie.
Lance pilots the red lion, and is sort of a more downplayed version of what he is in Legendary Defenders. Sort of like if you mixed his and Keith's current personalities.
Pidge is pretty cute, but a lot less cool, and not at all a girl. Though I feel like I remember him crossdressing one episode? I might have made that up.
Hunk is pretty much the same, though a bit more toned down in most cases.
Fala/Allura is a lot less hot.
Coran is still there, but he's a lot less wacky, mostly just there to stoically explain stuff.
There was another Altean around, a maid named Hys. She didn't really do too much, but provide comedy.
I'm pretty sure all the Altean's weren't dead? Allura/Fala had people she was ruling over, and they would get terrorized by the Roebeasts every week. But all of earth had been enslaved, which was what lead to the lion pilots getting pulled into everything in the first place. Though depending on if you watch Voltron or Golion this changes.Sven/Shiro dying is also not technically in the english version, and they just explain it away with him going back to earth to recover or something.
Also for at least half the series King Zarkon's son, Prince Lotor, is the main villain. His main thing is that he wants toHook up with Allura/Fala because she looks like his dead mom.
TL;DR, no one's outfits matched their lions, and everything was a lot more goofy.And the animation sucked
