Honestly I think the main issue was having effective bad guys, and how the book for a time basically became a wolverine and Quentin team up book, which took away from the other team members that could have used the character development.

It starts out strong, then goes off the rails a bit under Hama as it just gets weird, goes back up to about mediocrity (and mostly low tension slice of life) under Jay Faerber, then gets killed by Ellis/Wood.

I'm gonna be honest. The Massachusetts Academy seemed like a much better execution of the Xavier institute. Sure, it was led by the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, but it's not like that impacted her students a lot.
The whole thing got a much fairer treatment by Claremont than I would've expected. It was really just more of a rivalry rather than full-blown arch-nemesis thing and the teams even had a lot of respect for one another.
I haven't read to the point where it all turns to shit for them, though.
