I'd read it
Yeah, I'd be the third fucking time O'Malley would make the MC a shitty person, but I like his work, so who cares
>>
>>84269076
That's where you start. anon.

I need to read Scott Pilgrim again. I feel like I was too naive the first time I read it. Kinda couldn't identify with that young adult experience.
>>
>>84270017

He does shitty MCs pretty well.

>>84270046

Naturally.

I reread it recently. Really captured my early college angst in retrospect.
>>
>>84270073
Yeah, that's what I'm looking for. I read it when I was a senior in high school. Basically just kept thinking "Haha, yeah, totally!" whenever something happened, but I really wasn't connecting to the experience or emotional states of the characters.

I'd prefer a Lisa-centered spinoff but that'd be nice too.

High School Lisa and Kim series when?
>>
Is Scott Pilgrim good? Never read it and I'm actually in college, I 'v read on /co/ that it's a good read when you can identify with the characters.
But I don't know it seems a bit "random geeky humor" but the on experience I have was there movies trailer.
>>
>>84271746
its kinda both of the things you said

the movie however is unwatchable garbage imhotbch and has nothing to do with the comics
>>
>>84271746
I feel like you can miss the window in which you were supposed to read it. And I don't know you well enough to know whether or not you missed that window.

>>84268947
To be fair. I've met Emily Haines and she does come off as kind of a cunt. Josh and Jimmy were fucking awesome though
>>
>>84273767
What do you mean? The window is a short period of time?
It's a high school comic?

What is the wrong age? I'm the same age as the guy.
So the personality of some characters can be seen as some sort of "twist"?

I'm gonna check it anyway, I just hope the geeky humor isn't too loud, and may be I can learn some life lessons in it
>>
>>84271746
>>84273767
I read it right after I graduated high school, right before I got my first job, which was a huge time of transition for me, and I loved it, mainly because that was the kind of life I wanted to live: friends, the girl of my dreams, weird hijinks and action. Now that I'm in my 20's and actually in college I realize they're all just losers and the comic itself is pretty stupid. But, point being, I read it during a formative time in my life, and I think that's what made me love it so much.
>>
Scott sucks
Ramonas a whore
Knives is dumb
Wallace is a faggot but a cool faggot like Freddie Mercury

I have lived through the 20-24 apartment girls games and party in the city life and its not all the book makes it out to be. In fact if you are a poser trying to be like Scott youre almost as bad as being an actual Scott, the lowest form of modern man.
>>
>>84271746
It probably helped influence the whole abnoxious geek culture humor we see today, in fact it influenced a whole lot of shit today. It's a pretty monolithic comic in my eyes considering the amount of style, humor and atmosphere derived from it, but it itself isn't that abnoxious unfunny shit you'd expect today. It's legitmately fun and the cast is incredibly great at pulling you in and letting you enjoy the story.
>>
>>84268947
I thought the whole point was that she isnt as bad as everyone made her out to be

Envy isn't a bad person. She doesn't actually fuck people's lives up like Scott, Ramona, or Gideon. Being a bad person takes more than just not liking everyone. At worst, she's normal and has some history with Scott and is a bit snotty because she's a rock star.

You're mistaking not being a good person for being a bad person.
>>
>>84283432

>has the highlights punched out of Knives' hair for mildly annoying her

Scott's POV is somewhat unreliable. Envy is not necessarily the monster he likes to think of her as.
>>

>>
>>84283668

Isn't Envy heavily implied to have been cheating on Scott during their relationship before he did anything dickish?
>>
>>84285157
He was self absorbed and neglectful, she probably cheated on him after getting sick of that. It isn't right, but they both were kind of jerks. He just doesn't see how he did anything wrong at all because Scott misremembers things in his own favor constantly.

The movie's fucking incredible, some of the best symbolism in film history.

I love the comic more though. I've read it once a year since I graduated high school and it amazes me how well O'Malley seems to understand relationships.

>>84271746

I'd read it. It has some quirky humor but also great writing and characters, as well as art that evolves. Highly recommended
>>
>>84268947
She was fine in v6. She dedicated the first song of her debut concert to Scott, had a "CLOSURE" moment with him, and said she preferred her shitty 21st birthday with Scott and friends over the luxurious party Gideon threw for her.

At the end she admits she's a bit of an ice queen, but wasn't she always that way even before she met Scott?
>>
>>84287407
The issue with the movie as I watch now isn't the writing, I think. Everyone is a bit weird and stilted but in a way that kind of makes it feel like the comic. The problem is that some really good content is cut for time.

They get most characters right though, from Scott being an ubelievable shit to Wallace being best. The one who suffers most is Envy whose entire arc and bigger role from the comic is enormously reduced and with it her character.
>>
>>84287452

I also hate the movie's implication that Knives was better for Ramona too; her being turned into a mind-controlled damsel while Knives gets to kick ass pissed me off.

Which leads to my point that the only people who should have problems with the movie are people who love the comics.
>>
>>84287104
just
>>
>>84287598
I think that was a legit time/budget concern issue. I enjoyed Knives being great at the end, but I think that had the final sequence gone on longer it would have probably come out worse. Of course that just means it should have been rewritten tighter.

They also shot a Knives Wins ending, and considered doing that to make the movie and comics totally different alternate universes, but realized that wouldn't work for the same reason as why it wasn't in the comic

I also enjoyed the band fight, though the Katayanagis were the least well served of the evil exes in this movie as I rewatch it

Did it strike anyone else as fucking insane how fast in universe the climax moves from Gideon signing the band and absconding with Ramona to the showdown at the theater? It is literally the same night.

Also I don't know why I'm spoilering things. The movie is six years old, the comics older.

What reason is that? Scott ending up with Knives made more sense to me in the movie than it would've in the comic.
>>
>>84288392
Because it would be going back to zero for him and represent no growth as a person. He is a shit, as was Ramona. Basically the point of the comic was them progressing to be less shitty people together. Wallace did not lie, Knives deserved better. But their relationship being amicable in the end was good.

It was a couple of years ago now. If I actually think about it, I'll experience regret that my literal autism got in the way of knowing if any signals were being sent and so I erred on the side of caution, which meant inaction. There were a couple key points where said signals were not unclear at all. If I'd dropped a pseudo-thing with another girl earlier (which would have had no negative repercussions to this day) and/or if I'd been a little more assertive/self-serving instead of self-loathing/fearful (to the detriment of a bro (and it'd be a shame to lose him (tho probably it wouldn't have meant losing him depending on how early and how clearly I coulda communicated ~feelings~))), I might be with said ginge today (depending on how interactions with a fifth character_of_this_story would have gone).

Anyway here's another funnypic from back when SP was relevant to get shit back on topic.

I was pretty pissed off that Envy wasn't playable in the game. Instead we got fucking Nega-Scott, a palette-swap who had like 1 unique move. They already had most of the animations they needed from her boss fight, and it's not like they cared about letting you play as characters who appeared in the background (Wallace), were used in every other character's special moves (Knives), or boss fights (NEGA-SCOTT).

Of course, I'm even more pissed off that my PS3 broke so I'll never get to play it again. It had issues, like how obnoxious the River City Ransom elements were, but it was a fun game. They should release it on Steam, or make a fighting game or something.

>Gideon's story mode has him fight all of Scott's friends in place of the evil exes.
>Wallace, Stephen, Knives, Kim.
>Encounters a stronger version of Nega-Scott in the park.
>Finally meets up with Scott and Ramona in the Chaos Theatre.
>A three-phase fight ensues which ends with Gideon KOing both Scott and Ramona.
>It turns out to be a fantasy conjured up by Gideon as he struggles to escape from Subspace.

Agreed. If it had thirty more minutes to breathe in it'd be a 10/10 adaption.

The people who hate everything because it's popular to virtue signal their outsider status don't have to because it isn't popular anymore; it's possible to see the story as more than pandering now that the hipster era is kinda done with; the only people who still care about it are the ones who liked it.

She's a MPDG in the same way the protagonist of Eternal Sunshine is, which is she's a realistic portrayal of the kind of real girl the MPDG was derived from. Her fickle nature comes from a deep emotionally problem rather than from being quirky and energetic while also somehow interested in nursing depressed guys out of their depression. MPDG is just wish-fulfillment by people who never dated an actual MPDG.

What did Scott do to her while they were together? Or didn't do, for that matter.

I read it not long ago, still in college.

So I was supposed to relate to the characters 'cause I'm the same age, but I couldn't. The comic is so preachy on telling me that the MC is a shitty person. And then, there was the Envy arc that I just didn't get it.

Nigga did nothing wrong.

What have you done to me /co/???

Speaking of that OP, did Scott become a good person by the end? The impression I got was that Ramona was a fucking wreck and Scott remained a manchild, but neither was in any further state to 'fix' each other or continue their relationship or themselves.

It's like a harem series but in reverse, in fact it shits over that whole romantic ideal and might leave you dissatisfied with the ending when you realize it's message is poignant.

I never figured out how.
