Bojack thread

Will season 3 have a bigger gut punch in episode 11?

Also, rate the seasons so far:
as a whole: s1 > s2
episode to episode: s2 > s1
>>
>>84251402
sigh, most of us are looking forward to season 3. but this thread has no potential i am afraid.
>>
>>84251402
So I've seen this show around this board now and then. I don't know shit about it, right, but I saw it on netflx the other day and gave the first episode a shot, and I don't get it. It just seems like Family Guy. Too many cutaway gags. Stoner friend cause 'lol' and it feels like one of those shows some wealthy hollywood exec could relate to more than I could. It's also super painful to the eyes, and it's not subtle at all about the horse supposed to be a pity figure or something? Didn't go back to it. What is so special about it? I don't get why people are saying 'blank is the bojack horseman of blank' or what have you as if this show is something spectacular
>>
>>84252424
It's just a meme.
Please don't watch anymore of it.
>>
>>84252424
Get past the first few episodes. They act as a filter to get rid of the normies.
>>
>>84252424
>What is so special about it
There's no status quo they have to return to and this is people's first time seeing a cartoon character do anything but be happy and/or mean as a joke
There really isn't anything special about Bojack, it's a cartoon about a washed up celebrity.
It's not as if that hasn't appeared in media before, it's just that nobody who watches cartoons watches the kind of stuff where that shows up often

Bojack is an okay cartoon, definitely over hyped like Rick and Morty and Steven Universe, but that doesn't mean it's shit just because it has a rabid fanbase
>>
>>84252424
But you have to do it everyday, that's the hard part.
>>
>>84252424
The first two or three episodes are arguably bad. I suppose it was made that way to hook a specific crowd (as you said, Family Guy, with a bit of Two and a Half Men on the side), to then later on subvert their expectations and catch them completely off guard. I think it worked out, it gets really, really good later on, but if it wasn't for a friend pushing me to watch it I might not have done so. Critics weren't so kind on the first season either when it premiered, they likely only watched the first episode and maybe the second.

Do yourself the favour and watch the first season. Atleast half of it. The characters turn out to have a big deal of depth, with everyone being kinda a bad person without really being a bad guy. It's psychologically believable. The fun of it is realyl figuring out why Bojack is the person that he is. Season 1's episode 11 is probably one of my favourite cartoon episodes of all time.

Also, the writers took advantage of Netflix's binge watching format. There is a strong continuity that you won't find in series that just air one episode a week. Plus, you'll want to rewatch it, because a lot of touches and jokes in the packground you won't pick up until you have seen later episodes.
>the first thing Bojack said to Herb

About the visuals, yeah, I don't like the animation style either, but the art style grows on you, especially with all the visual gags they do with it later on.

Being bojack is suffering

I mean when he sees his mom you figured she might say something to encourage him when he was doing the movie

but know she just told him that he's broken just like the rest of his family
>>
>>84252467
I feel like I pretty much got the whole gist from the first episode though. It felt pretentious to me, like oh, these characters all SEEM like they're a one note character, but hey look, the horse hates himself, the stoner has some kind of shady past and uses parties to cope and we're gonna waste the series expanding on this trope we explained in the first half hour. Pity them."

Again, that's just my impression. I haven't looked up anything about it. Just wondering if I'm right
>>
>>84252517
The thing about stoner friend's shady past really is just a joke. It doesn't impact his character development. Todd seems to be one of the more genuinely likable people of the show, but generally he is just there for comedic relief and for Bojack to bounce off of.

>>84252508
That felt kinda forced to me, really. People don't talk like in real life, atleast not out of the blue like that.
>>
>>84252517
You're pretty much right

People are hyping up this show because it's about characters that have secret or notso secret parts of themselves that slowly get characterized as time goes on, but that shouldn't be the pinnacle of cartoons, that should be the standard

I like Bojack and I'll recommend it because it's enjoyable, but it's not the funniest or the deepest cartoon out there despite what some might claim

Watch it or don't watch it, it's up to you

Don't you mean sofa?

>>84252517
I almost forgot about that joke with Todd in the first season. Yeah, nah, that's not really him. Todd's just a likable goofball.

And yeah, Bojack does hate himself, but the first episode doesn't get across how or why, and how he acts according to that. It just let's him appear as a jerk, when really he is... well, an even bigger jerk who doesn't want to be a jerk at all. See this post: >>84252500

>>84252594
Yeah, nah, he did everything wrong.
>>
>>84251402
When does that show get good?
>>
>>84252633
Season 1 episode 4, "Zoës and Zeldas"
>>
>>84252517
Todd's thing is less about a shady past and more about being on constant wacky adventures. He often serves as the ridiculous cartoony comedic subplot to contrast to the slightly more serious story going on in most episodes. His history with that mexican gang is dropped quickly to move on to a lot of other different things.

Bojack on the other hand consistently gets actual development and clear arcs.
>>
>>84252675
Well, Todd has an arc in season 1. But really, that's just Bojack's arc of being a jerk who doesn't want to be alone.
>>
>>84252553
Sometimes they do when they're old and dying. Old invalid people that have estranged themselves from their families can get really cryptic.

he should have slept on the couch in the house so when whatshername came in he could have said your daughter is in my bed ready to seduce me

he would have a talk then head home

Everything up to like episode 6 is shite but after that it's so good that many reviewers had to release statements about how wrong they were with their reviews because netflix shows get reviewed on the first half of the season. Slug it through until episode 6 and you won't be disappointed.

it's a really fucking meh show

I liked how they were building up to Todd finding out Bojack fucked up his space opera opportunity, only to see that Todd wasn't mad because he expected Bojack to be a selfish douchebag and ruin it.

The "shady past" thing is dropped after the whole mexican cartel gag and pretty much retconned out of canon. After that, he's a guy that was kicked off his home for being a slacker.

I think most people watch this for the depression. If don't think this show it really funny.
Todd is awful and unbearable, and he's supposed to be the "funny" character.

The character In can't understand is Mr PB. I really don't know who he really is,or whatever is his personality. Is he a happy, carefree guy? A manipulative cunt? A mix of both?

I'm expecting a twist on how he is actually really depressed but he manage to hide it so well.

I hope they get rid of Todd, he's irrelevant and brings nothing to the story. I feel nothing for him, I can't relate or get behind the character. He's one-dimensional, only here to make a stupid sound and a transition to another scene.

>The character In can't understand is Mr PB. I really don't know who he really is,or whatever is his personality. Is he a happy, carefree guy? A manipulative cunt? A mix of both?
He is the opposide of Bojack. He is just genuinely dumb and happy with himself.

>>84256069
>>84257986
>wanting Todd to die
What is wrong with you? He is Bojack's only real friend. He is not supposed to be developed. He is something for Bojack to bounce off of.
>>
>>84259421
Is Mr PB really dumb? I feel like all of this is a facade.

And how is Todd a friend? He did nothing to be considered a friend. He's nice with Bojack, that's it, while he's a parasite who sleep on his couch.

He's a nice and chill guy, but thats it.

I don't especially want him to die, that would be too much, but I wouldn't be very surprised if the creators make that happening
>>
>>84259525
>Is Mr PB really dumb? I feel like all of this is a facade.
Nah, it was pretty much spelled out already. He's a Zoe. That's it. Don't look for depth where there is intended to be none.

>And how is Todd a friend?
Maybe friend is the wrong term, but he is the one to keep Bojack company. Killing him off if he wasn't important to Bojack would be pretty forced anyway. Why not just develop him rather than killing him for being underdeveloped?
>>

That, and

>Sweetie, you know I support you, whatever you want to do, but you're not gonna find what you're looking for in these awful made-up places. The universe is a cruel, uncaring void. The key to being happy isn't a search for meaning. It's to just keep yourself busy with unimportant nonsense, and eventually, you'll be dead.

I'm not sure if either really signify that he's secretly depressed, more just a bit nihilistic.

The point is that even a 1%er can be sad, something a lot of this generation doesn't seem to get, for some reason. Money can't buy you happiness, love, or fulfillment. It can only buy you free time and cool stuff.
