My problem with this is that it feels like the writers cared more about namedropping shows and movies than actually coming up with actual jokes, story beats, characterization, etc. There's no surprises whatsoever. Even the references are shallow (dude Dr. Who lmao).
Fandom humor isn't funny and this pilot reeks of that. Fandom "culture" (if we're really going to use that word) is something more concerned about identifying with a work of fiction than actually engaging with it; it's nice to like something and share that with others, but eventually it just metastasizes into some groupthink, in-group mentality, and that breeds slavish devotion and real superficial understandings. The jokes only work if you're similarly engrossed/obsessed, which is fine for your Tumblr blog or Facebook page, I guess, but it isn't going to ingratiate you to a wider viewing audience.

The only joke I actually laughed at was the "let's ask this guy" reveal which wasn't a reference at all. The rest of it was just sort of funny trappings like the video store being covered in cobwebs and the dumb one telling a customer they can just stream shit.
