I think someone said a few threads ago that stood out
Pre-retcon, Dave and Karkat were both kind of absurdist. Their comments and rants had a lot of silly aspects to them. Karkat didn't just say "fuck" a lot, he was surprisingly creative, as was Dave.
Now they just talk. They don't really crack jokes, they don't go on those weird rambles, and they aren't as insulting. The last part is the only one that could be argued that "hurr durr they're more emotionally stable" but Homestuck always had that ribbing and back and forth, even between friends. Post-retcon it feels like nobody has a fucking spine. Everyone is all happy and friends, and nobody swears too much because Homestuck has to pull a T rating from the ESRB.

i can accept that with condys powers being what they are, jade had to get mind controlled. though id rather it was fixed better and she had a chance to do some op shit after. one of the best things about act 5 is that dave's timetravel loops were fucking op and he took advantage of them. writing op powers in a satisfying way is a fucking challenge for most writers but i definitely thought for a while that andrew could pull it off.

From that you could extrapolate that Davros was meant to be an endgame ship, because Kanaya went to Dave for advice on how to troll Rose and then they got together, whilst Tavros went to Rose for advice on how to troll Dave, and then they had their innuendo laden kraft mayo/bull riding rap log.
Hussie has said in Q&As that he sets up patterns and parallels, and then either plays into them or disregards them as he sees fit. He dropped Rose and Jade's personality inversion, but that doesn't mean that it was supposed to be fulfilled and he's just a hack, it may mean that he decided not to do it on purpose and he's just a hack.

If Hussie had come out and said "Hey guys, I'm notoriously shit at estimates, I initially thought Homestuck was gonna finish up within a year, and then I said by 2012, and we've all seen how that turned out. In HSG's mind, the best epilogue needs:
Dave and Jade having babies and Davekat being sunk or confirmed platonic
Lord English's defeat being shown or at least the aftermath
A confirmation of what happened to all the fucking characters
A conversation between the four kids including them posing as a team
Conversations between other family members, such as Rose/Dirk
Karkat at least ruling over some aspect of troll society and not being a fucking wuss
Conversations and art actually written by Hussie

Not at all. Davepeta's explanation muddied the concept. Davepeta's implication is that "it's okay if you don't reach your potential because there are circumstances where you could have". It suggests that the individual experience doesn't matter, but the ultimate self is nothing but an aggregation of individual experiences. This is why you see so many fans confusing the concept of the ultimate self with an actual person. Davepeta did a poor job of conveying that the "ultimate self" concept is just a thought experiment and does not serve as consolation for the unfortunate and the damned.

The Ultimate Self is not "there are multiple versions of the characters". The Ultimate Self is "all versions of you are really the same person, so it doesn't matter that you're one and not the other".
Alternate selves have been a theme in the comic for a long time, with characters comparing themselves to their alternate selves and others like them, wondering how their own accomplishments measure up in comparison, and wondering who they should be and could have been. It's one of the main themes of the comic and its coming-of-age story.
The Ultimate Self comes out of nowhere, goes nowhere, and goes directly against the comic's established themes as well as its established metaphysics. It doesn't affect the comic in any way, beyond helping characters (and, supposedly, the readers) feel better about things.

Karkat is like the shaky nervous guy in dirty clothes at the casino, clearly someone who's on his absolute last hope in this world before he officially has nothing, shouting "ALL IN ON RED" and pushing his meager pile of chips forward. Our viewport into his world is then frozen in that moment, forever. That is the extent of the resolution we got with this character.

The problem with the idea of the Ultimate Self is that it treats characters as nothing more than extensions of their own platonic ideal, and expects us to care about the ideal rather than the individuals who actually exist.
Davesprite's character arc is a good example of the problems this causes. For most of his existence, Davesprite's problem was that he felt overshadowed by the "alpha" Dave. He thought he was just a second-rate knockoff, a doomed timeline echo who didn't really matter compared to his "true" self. This isn't a problem unique to him; the alpha Dave had a very similar character arc, where he was constantly comparing himself to other people like his Bro and John, feeling like they were better and more important than him.
Alpha Dave overcame this by learning to appreciate himself for who he was, not worrying about whether he's the "best" or not.
Davesprite was forced in the opposite direction when Davepeta happened, outright denying his status as an individual in favor of considering himself an instance of the "Ultimate Dave" and deciding that all of the Daves' collective awesomeness was essentially his.
Alternate selves are a common theme in the comic, but in virtually every instance the difference between one self and the next was a crucial point. It was extremely important that Meenah isn't the Condesce, or that Spades Slick wasn't Bec Noir. Then it suddenly wasn't.

So from what I can recall she had issues with loneliness, using her focus on romance as a sort of comfort blanket to mask said loneliness hence her fixation on Karkat out of nowhere. I think the whole Disciple Suffering bond also possibly played a part, but that is likely speculation on my part as I can't recall outright confirmation on something like that.
I think the loneliness stems from her rather savage lifestyle pre-sburb, similar to Roxy in some respect which makes sense given they're both Rogues. She's likely one of those people who needs to be surrounded by people and yet she's only got Equius, whom she cares for deeply, Aradia, who died and became a creepy robot and Terezi, who she should have helped develop and actually provided something meaningful for the comic. The roleplaying seems to be her attempts at blocking out her lonely situation, which is amusingly likely the cause for her troubles in finding friends given how odd it is.

What gets me is that Hussie didn't use this as an ongoing narrative support device, instead of blocking out a huge swathe of rushed time for it.
He could have, during the entire story once the trolls started to warm up to the kids, have them explain and contrast the kid's actions against how it's 'supposed' to go, maybe with callback panels and brief glimpses of their session to help pad the story along and serve their original purpose, as a way to make the story go fast with successful players talking the kids along.
Then when you hit the r-kids, kid them another 4 trolls of the 12 to serve as patrons and story-movers. Then wrap it all up at the end with just the 8 kids and 12 trolls against Jack.

I would have liked it if it were the four beta kids being hassled by the trolls about doing stupid shit and things going wrong, gradually becoming more proficient as time goes by until the scratch, when they actually lose contact and never meet up. Murderstuck happens, all the trolls die, with a bit more emphasis on the fact it's Cal/LE guiding Gamzee's hand, setting them up as a villain with real weight and consequence to the story. Then jump to the alpha kids being hassled by the Cals, but with more time fuckery so you get future Caliborn (LE) gloating and lording it over them about how great he is, and Alt Calliope secretly making contact, working in the shadows on contingency plans and attempting to guide the alphas to some kind of success. Then the beta kids bust through the scratch to the session, kick their kid-guardians into gear by also being their respective kid-guardians, and team up against the two ultimate threats (Betas vs. Bec Noir and Alphas/Callie vs. LE) to win the game.
I wish unprototyped Tavrosprite and unprototyped Nepetasprite had found each other, had an awkward handshake and then became a giant black hole. That would have been a great culmination of their character arcs.

I wonder if Hussie was originally going with that in order to make Homestuck stand out to other works of fiction? Like, instead of there being some big climactic battle with Lord English, we just have his fate left hanging somewhat uncertain, and Dave rejects being a hero, even though he was prophesied to be one and certainly acts like a hero early on in the story.

I know I'm replying to it late, but since nobody else has addressed this:
Neither Sollux nor Karkat were mutants. Mutation is a result of reproduction gone awry; a flaw in the mixing of genes inherited from parents. Neither of them have parents, nor were they produced by the mixing of genes. They're straight-up clones, created in a lab. Which means that the things which seemed to have made them mutants were instead just part and parcel of who and what they are as genetically-engineered organisms.
Moreover, Sollux was always going to be a hero of doom. That was something innate to his existence from the moment he emerged from the tank where he was created, since his involvement in the game was predestined by his very nature.
Therefore, to say that his powers and his aspect are muddled misconstrues who and what he is. They're both something innate to him, and it's not unreasonable to believe that being a doom player from the outset guaranteed him these self-destructive powers because that's part of what the role in life of a doom player is.
If the humans had had a hero of doom, the presence or absence of similar powers could have helped to confirm or disconfirm this.

I don't think her remaining evil would have been a good thing, given her primary association and interest for the reader is heavily anchored to learning more about Nannasprite; one of the earliest supporting characters who remained quite a mystery given the sprite's task of presenting things in the most quizzical and roundabout way possible. Her detective interest could have been an interesting way to have her positive influence the story, given the two Seers are a bit inconsistent in how effective they choose to be; someone with a can do attitude and a penchant for mysteries and detective work could have been an interesting addition to their exploits whilst expanding on the similarities and differences between this Jane and the version of her we knew in the past.
However, you could easily argue having a bait and switch on the seeming lead of the Alpha kids becomming an adversary and another problem for the characters to deal with in a different way than the other big bads would have been interesting as well. There's a lot of ways her character could have been handled to make her more interesting, but none were really acted upon for whatever reason, the same can be said for so many main and supporting characters it's not even funny.
Both are viable options for different reasons, and yet we got neither.
