I saw the first one, it was terribly written, often making little sense or dumbing itself down, and Sandler's voice work was ass, but there was a bunch of good direction of the characters in stuff like action and dance sequence, which I attribute to Genndy's influence.
Also Mavis was fappable.

I like the idea of normalized relationships between people and monsters, and I enjoyed how the second one revolved around a difference of opinion in child-rearing rather than just have a villain-that-just-doesn't-understandwhich was subsequently ruined when in the last twenty minutes they DO introduce a stock close-minded baddie and everyone just kicks the shit out of him.

First one was decent. Second was a grab for money that bastardized the characters.
In the first one he has safety precautions when teaching Mavis how to fly. In the second film, he just fucking throws his grandson off a tower.

Second one has some great faces, some terrible jokes, and a villain and fight scene shoehorned in at the last minute.
