The first Cars was really damn cynical but it was made when Pixar was going to leave Disney and presented as a "Here's your goddamn movie" kind of cartoon. The opening cartoon was basically a declaration to both Disney and Dreamworks that Pixar could make money without them. Then the short before Wall-E featured a rabbit kicking the shit out of a Magician that looked like Walt Disney for not giving him his fair share. It was a dark time that only receded when Eisner was given the boot.

I'm 22 and watched Disney's Dinosaur recently after I kept having recurring dreams about it, thinking it would unlock something deep in my childhood memory that would explain the way I am feeling.
I found it during the scene where all the monkeys pick a mate in the tree before the meteor storm. That scene was burned into my subconscious. The young monkey lemur thing doesn't find a female to mate with, at that second it's as if he has doomed himself, unable to spread his genes the sheer metaphor for the destruction of his lineage rains out of the sky in the form of flaming meteors, destroying the planet, borne of his own fears.
Also there was some stuff to do with Titanic in my dream too, falling in love during a cataclysmic event makes the stakes for the film stretched to as far as they possibly will go. I think Deep Impact does it too. I don't know, I'm just rambling now.

It's Pixar's "serious" film in that there's really no comedy or exciting adventure. It's a deliberately slow-paced and somber Western-style story with some very sad moments and some surprisingly violent moments. It also has the most realistic environments of any Pixar movie. It's a damn good movie but the fact that the whole thing is about insecurity, loss, and death without actually being a dark/contemplative film kind of leaves a weird taste in your mouth. I enjoyed it but outside of Brave, it's Pixar's most flawed film. (Cars 2 isn't flawed, it's just a ridiculous genre spoof that would be entertaining as a TV special but is pointless as a movie)

The Wild existed in script form since the late 80's. When Dreamworks got wind Disney was finally going into production, they rushed Madagascar to beat it to the box office.
