I happily live in my own little world of what's in and not in canon.
Sometimes i stand in front of the mirror pretending that i'm the Riddler in Ben Afflecks Batman movie, i even talk pretend i'm talking to Joker and Poison Ivy trying to come up with a plan to defeat Batman. Than i get lonely and sleep for the rest of the day.
Forcing his victims to mutilate themselves in order to solve his puzzles wouldn't make sense for Riddler, his deathtraps are a battle of wits not whatever retarded ideological mumbo-jumbo they pulled out of their asses to justify six more movies.

Turning Riddler into a discount Jigsaw in terms of his actual characterization for some "modern" edge would be a fucking awful idea.
That being said, I DO think the general idea of a "death trap" gimmick could definitely be refined into something workable enough to suit Nigma's own preferences. He could always supplement the mandatory torture porn with brain teasers being the key to escape, or something along those lines... The only real trick would be justifying how he could get anyone into those damned things in the first place... Kidnapping, them the classic "trap door into the pit", there's got to be a more original twist to that end that still aligns with his own motivations for even using them in the first place.
