it sort of goes along with batnipples. old mecha (also sentai helmets, kikaider, all that stuff) were styled after greek statues. meant to evoke the image of, like, the colossus of rhodes come to life. the fully detailed facial features make it all the more distinctive when said features don't move, just a stoic robotic visage.
western shit tended to do the opposite, if it had an unmoving faceplate it would have square-socket mouth slits, and a moving face would have organic-looking parts and just bend inexplicably.

In the original series? I actually don't remember, it's been so many years. But I don't think they did. I don't remember them ever acting on their own, or communicating with the pilots or anything like that.
That's something I really enjoy about Legendary Defender, is how they play up the unique attributes of the lions, and emphasize that they are not merely robots. Whatever we see of Voltron's origins, I'm sure it will be very magical and give a sense of his having been "born" rather than created.

I think it's more like Voltron was like the Iron Giant or maybe even a little lower than that. I'm not sure what a concise description would be, but more like an Ancient Guardian that has a singular purpose (destroy evil) and knows nothing else, but was fatally attracted to Hagar.
No question there's a tragic element to it but I don't think it's like piloting a corpse, I think it's like controlling the disparate parts of a once unified semi-autonomous weapon that now can only come together for brief periods of time, but is made stronger for being mixed with humans.

In GoLion, it was an arrogant and powerful warrior that caused so much devistation in its daily routine of Fucking Shit Up that the Goddess of the Universe stepped in and told him to use that power for peace (or at least knock it off with the mass destruction). I feel like Keith as a blank slate, while unsatisfying in providing proper backstory and a foundation for good characterization, has provided him with some good moments in the show. I'm not denying that the character needs more depth, but I think there's been just a small bit in his interactions with Lance.
That being said, I really do hope the second half of the first season is character-driven, because the first half did end up prioritizing plot-events over character (and I still loved it).

I'm OK with that because the first half of the season had a lot of exposition and basic worldbuilding to get through, and I'm OK with the barebones characterization if it's been deferred to later episodes as opposed to absent outright. Pidge is the only character who got significantly fleshed out during these episodes beyond what was functional, but I expect the rest to follow in turn.

The first half provided some solid world-building, especially in regards to the Galra empire, but I wonder if they were too worried about establishing the universe too quickly?
For example, we have the basic set up established in the pilot and explained within ten minutes. While I'm not complaining about the expediency, it did occur lightning fast and seemed more like something to get out of the way rather than explore. This trend tended to continue throughout the rest of the season, although there are some good instances of slower-burning plot-building (bounty hunters, Shiro realizing he's a Galra bio-weapon).
That said, I'm fucking hyped for next half.
