Production costs only go up with each successive season.
Unless the audience is constantly growing the moneymen only see diminishing returns on each season produced. The question is whether they can justify it through sale of DVDs/merchandise, symbiotic relationships with other shows on the network, or just not having much in terms of production costs in the first place (I.E. the Adult Swim model).
Clerks had awful ratings and was completely out of place on ABC. It never had a chance.
