She represented another regular female in the tribe so that they weren't all just background characters and Pocahontas's dad, and showed us that Pocahontas had at least one human friend. She worked parallel to that friend of Smith's that he saved from drowning: the main character's best friend that is a reasonable person but kinda leans towards their particular group's mentality (in this case, the whites and the natives) until the main character converts them and they're the first non main character to step up for peace.
