Have any of you met any webcomic artists?

I met Jeph Jacques at the last webcomic con in north hampton back in 2014, I believe it was. He's pretty recluse, seems "chill" on the surface... But you would not believe his reaction to criticism. A girl approached and said something fairly innocuous about the way he draws women (along the lines of "They're all conventionally attractive/I'd like to see you give other looks a try some time") You could see the moment in his head where he processed her meek critique as one of the most horrible things he had ever heard in his life.

He then bitched about it later on his twitter & tumblr, deleted it, but not until he had received back-pats from his plethora of retarded fans assuring him that he's great, that chick didn't know what she was talking about, just jealous, etc... Needless to say, any amount of respect for the guy I had was lost after that.
>>
well fuck that chick 2bh.

I met Scott Kurtz at a restaurant once - we’d accidentally been given his table. Apparently he was fond of the restaurant and had a specific table he liked, and the management had messed up and gotten their days wrong, (it was Tuesday and they thought he was coming on Thursday or something like that). Anyway, the manager, completely embarrassed (this is a pretty nice restaurant) comes by and says “I’m so sorry, but we’d like to move you to another table if you could be troubled, and we’ll gladly compensate you for the cost of the meal and any other meal you’d like while you’re in town.” My sister and cousin were both like “Yeah that’s cool.” and I kind of played the asshole a bit. “I’m sorry, I just don’t understand. We’ve been here for 15 minutes - we’ve just ordered. Can’t we finish our meal here?” Then out of nowhere Scott Kurtz shows up next to the manager and says “Paul, these guys can finish. We’ll be at the bar. I got some time.” And I (being a big PVP fan) said “Oh wow, uh… I had no idea. Please feel free to give them the table.” Scott was grateful, shook my hand and said thanks, then gave me a card with his number on it and told me to give him a call later. After working up the nerve, I gave him a call that night, and to make a long story short, we had a glorious 11 month love affair, man on man, that I shall never forget. Our bodies intertwined as one, and from the beauty of Morocco, to the French Riviera, to the snorkeling in the Galopagos, Scott Kurtz and I made glorious gay love to each other on six of the seven continents.

Also, don't know if this counts, but I've met plebcomics too. She's tsundere as fuck and chill in a weird way. Very easy to talk to. She's also severely agoraphobic.

I met Aaron Diaz. He had huge wings as black as a moonless night, eyes a preircing glowing yellow, breath that smelt like a thousand rotting corpses, and fire shot from his nostrils. When I complemented his paneling reared back, roared, transformed into a bear, grabbed a random nearby mother's baby in his mighty jaw, and ran off into the mist.

Okay guy though. Not nearly as bad as /co/ makes him out to be.

Yeah, literally who?
>>

>>
I met Katie Tiedrich at a con last weekend.
I don't follow her on twitter, read the schedule thoroughly, or see her last minute announcement since I only read her comic on Sunday and Monday, so seeing her completely caught me off guard on the last day. I've met rappers and sports stars before without any problem, but I ended up acting really awkward because my friends were in the larger vendor's area and nobody else was at her booth.

>>
>>83610520
I've met him too, actually. He is not at all "okay" and is in fact as arrogant as he comes across online.

He also tries to comb-over what little hair he has over his gargantuan head. It's comically pathetic.

I saw Chris Onstad a grocery store in Portland yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?" I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw Onstad trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen artisanal sodas in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the sodas and started SCANNING it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each soda and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I saw Ronnie Filyaw at a McDonalds in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued to the counter, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to order my lunch up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen chicken mcnugget boxes in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

I met Jeph at Toronto CAF a few years back. He didn't seem like *that* much of a jerk, but he seemed totally disinterested in everything. Like all his "fans" were idiots.

On the contrary, Sam Logan was the next booth down, and he was literally jumping with excitement to meet everyone. Great to see.

Also met Ryan North, Danielle Corsetto, and Katie Tiedrich.
>>
>>83610747
Maybe I did use the term wrong. She's very sweet and does nice things for you... All while calling you "bitch" or "dumb" or "an asshole". It's funny and cute but you can't tell her that because it pisses her off.

And she'll throw your drink on the floor :(

Do web animators count?
I met Krinles once at a con.
I saw a booth with some of his prints and I stopped with my friends and said "oh hey, Madness Combat, I loved this shit in jr. High.
The girl at the booth then said "oh, well we have Krinles right here." And then I saw behind her Krinkles as he looked up in a haste like he just woke up from a nap.
Dude was chill, signed a print for me.
Pretty average guy.
>>
>>83610914
Katie is a total sweetheart. And a huge fucking dork.
>>
Long ago I met Ian McConville and Matt Boyd from (at the time) MacHall at a con. They both seemed very chill, though my impression of Ian that he was shy. At the same con I also met Josh Mirman, of Stubble (later Punks and Nerds). Also a cool guy, and somewhat surprised and embarrassed when I told him I was familiar with his previous comic Josh Babes. It was actually my very first webcomic, and got me into the wider world of webcomics.

Trivia: I found Josh Babes through a link to it on his Pokemon fan page, where he was known as Exo-Dragon. This identity was referenced in RPG World by Ian J Quartey, who of course, is now better known for his work on Steven Universe.
>>
Some friends I had started a webcomic. Their artists were actually chill the one time I met them, but by that point my old friends were assholes.
>>
Gisele Lagace (Menage a 3) had a table at my local comic expo a few months ago but decided against talking to her. I didn't see any way that conversation could have ended without me embarrassing myself explaining how I like reading Ma3.

>>
I went to the last two Wizard World Comic cons here in Cleveland and saw the Cyanide and Happiness guys both times. They're super nice and kind which you might not expect and really love drawing doodles. First year was packed but this time it didn't seem like there was as many people seeing them (although their one friend was there with the hunting / dark emo looking stuff which seemed to take up half their "booth")
>>

All jokes aside i actually did meet Aaron diaz at the SPX a long time ago. This was long before he really started to lose his shit online. In person He was what you would expect if you didn't follow him online: another odd art type.
He wasn't rude or particularly friendly. Just kinda ...there. One thing was for certain he wasn't as "bold" in person as he seems online.

I've met Kate Leth a few times, mostly when she still worked at a comic shop, she's always came off as kind of dismissive and again, I don't really have anything to say to her. I get the vibe from her work that she'd be really judgmental and full of herself.

In 1991 during the recording for Mobius Trip (whose role involved playing rookie Prospit agent 'Mobius Trip') Michael Bowman was surfing with the music team when a small child was dragged under the waves and began to struggle to stay above surface. As his co-stars rushed to help, Reeves held out an arm infront of them, stopping them and was reported saying by "The waves have claimed her, let her fight for her own life". The crew, dumbfounded, proceeded to watch her struggle until her body disappeared beneath the waves, lifeless. He was later spotted outside the child's house, making drowning gestures and thanking the family for their child's sacrifice to the great ocean.

I'm a state employee and I make no qualms about the fact that the only reason I'm half as good at my job as anyone else is the simple fact that I've been here a long time and know how "the system" works. It feels bad when people have legitimately awesome ideas that could really improve how shit runs, but you have to try and explain that it'll never come to pass because the powers that be prefer things to work their way and only react/accept change when an obviously inadequate policy results in complete and utter catastrophe and forces their hand. And that always involves a few firings and reassignments before all is said, so it's usually not worth the trouble.
>>
I met Ryan North and Chris Hastings at a con once. It was a small con that was more geared towards /tg/ than /co/ so nobody knew who either of them were. My wife and I basically just chatted them up for the whole time, they were both really nice and we got a bunch of free swag.

I actually want to meet some webcomic guys. I'm not particularly a fan of anybody. I am a drawfag. Kinda just want to see what they're about. From my experience in talking to other artists. They get treated with a lot of respect and fandom, facebook pretty much walls them off from making friends with newbie artists. Before social media, you would gather on conceptart or pennyarcade for example. Now you gotta break bread by being a good artist or send them a really nice email or message.
My point is, I imagine I'd be wasting their time, and not buying one of their prints would just upset them.

Anyway this post is way too convoluted.
>>
>>83617647

I met the author of Bittersweet Candy Bowl, Taeshi (and her husband Suitcase), at Anime Central once. She signed my books and drew some doodles in the front covers for me! And when I dropped by the booth later in the day I found out that she'd actually redrawn a couple of them in her notebook in case I came back because she felt she could've done them better, which was really sweet.

A decent size group of readers of the webcomic actually happened to come down for the convention so we went out to dinner afterwards and then went out drinking and had a great time in general! There were a couple other meetups with them over the course of the con but unfortunately I could only make the one.
>>
I used to hang out on #Webcomics on the something awful IRC. Had a decent number of authors and fans as regulars. It was a really cool community but IRC dissolved and everyone got split between Tumblr and Twitter and the whole gang is MIA anymore. I can't keep up with no one. I miss those days.

I met Garth Ennis once. We struck up a conversation because I grew up in the same town as him and he heard my accent. My family all speak Irish and I usually give the Gaelic version of my name, and when he asked what my name was and I told him, he got really quiet then left suddenly. I heard he had a problem with Catholics but I didn't think it was that severe.
>>
I met Jess Fink at a convention, years ago. It was days after a /co/ thread storytimed "We Can Fix It" and I was interested in buying a copy.

We talked, I asked to buy a copy, and I brought up how I came to be interested in doing so. A horrified look came over her. "They were posting my comic for free?!"

I panicked, coming up with some half-baked lie that the thread only had a few early pages because illegal posting wasn't allowed, or something. So no piracy! She cheered and I cheered in response in that kind of jokey "yay!" way. I shuffled away pretty quickly after that.

There was another time I walked by Aaron Diaz in a hotel bar and he winked at me, while tipping his wine glass. Wearing his suit and bow tie and everything.
>>

I've seen two separate webcomic artists in person (one mentioned it on a forum for anyone who wanted to meet up, the other hand a public talk) but was too chicken to get up and talk to either one. I didn't even get a signature.

That was years ago, although the opportunity was long gone.

found out he was doing autographs on Saturday in the middle of the afternoon

literally almost missed the autograph session

>I was running as fast as I could when I made it just in time for conops told the volunteer to stop accepting people

>I look down hallway see my friend running down the hallway volunteer says she can't get in line

>told him that was my best friend and its only one more person

>allows it

>I slowly wait in line as it gets shorter and shorter

>pull out my sketch book flip to an open page and start to panic when its my turn

>he starts to flip through my sketchbook the wrong way since I'm left handed I had to show him to go backwards

>looking at sketches nods head I was thinking "oh god he's going through my sketchbook"

>MFW "oh god he's going to think its terrible"

>gets to a blank page

>"okay he's going to sign it now"

>draws a pic of Celes from FF6 then autographs it

>I'm in shock literal shock. I can barely keep any composure as I get my sketchbook back.

>I dash as far and fast as I can before I fucking go ape shit in excitement over the fact he just did what he did

>I've never done anything like that before exploding like that

>a friend told me they could hear me over the crowd down the hall

I'm so fucking happy I never lost it to nobuo uematsu when I met him

This is why I know I'll eventually succeed at my webcomic once I get started (Too much life shit right now.). I've already done a ton or research and OPs story is textbook example on what not to do with criticism. As long as I'm getting good advice on what I'm doing wrong, I don't care how much you insult my work; you will have my undivided attention. And if I try it and people don't like it (or it's just fucking stupid), learn and move on. I don't care how much work I put into it. In the end, all that matters is getting better.

When you get into an art career you realize how mentally taxing, humiliating and thankless it is, and you probably have to deal with years of pure shit to get any kind of recognition.
Any webcomic artists other than Aaron Diaz deserve every penny they make.
>>
>>83627343

That's what social media, comic conventions, etc. are for (and probably some luck). If it trends in the right places, you're in. Before I brainstormed a single idea on what the webcomic was going to be about, I first read up on all the highs and lows of the business from the experts.

I've already accepted that this project will take a TON of time to get it right so I'm in no hurry right now. It's funny. I hear the webcomic industry has tons of fierce competition; and yet, the best of the best are constantly giving out great advice on how to do it right. I sometimes have trouble keeping up with it all.

Fuck, getting off topic here. Does "Gold Digger" Fred Perry count? Yeah, he's legit, but he's released most of his stuff free online. Last I heard, he's released more content than almost everyone else. Met him several times. Awesome guy and a hard worker.

You know who I've always wanted to meet? Matthew Taranto, creator of Brawl in the Family. He seems like the coolest dude to ever meet.

>On a related note, his shop closed in 2014, anyone know why?
Mtlfag here. I had no idea his shop closed down. It was always in my plan to visit it and witness the beast with my own eyes.

Unrelated to Sohmer. I didn't met him but I brought the Anime Club book from KC Green and he did this which is nice.

I met Katie Rice at Pax south and I met the penny arcade guys at the mall before Pax.
I was too autistic to say anything worth mentioning to them.

Quite honestly, I don't know what I'd even say if I met the webcomic artists I remotely pay attention to. Even so, they either live across the country or overseas, so there goes that anyway. But what do you say? "Um, hey. You make a thing I read sometimes. So yeah."
