>Doc is not a bear after all
Then what the hell is he?
>>
First chronological mention of in-universe cartooniness?

Doc gives the gift of brief stability to Holly and the first thing she does in return is try and reassure him that he's not some horrible abomination. D'awww.

Huh, even the comic doesn't know what doc is. According to the GoComics comments (obligatory euuurgh), "Badger" sounds like a best guess from the guy who wrote the character page on the wiki. Anyone got email commentary from Aaron?

Next page is going to be about getting to somewhere safer...

If Aaron decided to suddenly write ninja turtles into the comic I wouldn't be the least bit upset.

And I don't mean a nod or a reference, but just straight up Donatello & Raphael. Hell, throw Usagi in there for good measure.

he'd have a bit of white fur to show for it then? Every badger species has some lighter fur on its face.
>>
>>83608392
It could be because that's how badgers look in cartoons
>>
>>83608521
every badger I've ever seen in any cartoon is either blatantly black with white fur or otherwise distinct. Aaron probably didn't have anything in particular in mind. Maybe Doc is the embodiment of "grump".
>>
>>83608608
What If he's not a badger, but instead a hybrid? Now this couldn't have sense since he was asleep when mutating, but as we see the virus works in some misterious ways.
>>
Holly really just needs to go back to Endtown and stay there. She's incompatible with both this adventure and Wally.

Wally needs to be on the move, he cant be sedentary; and Holly needs stability and support. Neither one of them have a life style that the other can live with. I don't see how anyone can ship them together for any reason other than because they just happened to stumble across each other first. It's a completely unrealistic relationship. At least Kirbee got picked up (versus just having been a one off character) so he isn't doomed to be a forever alone.

Could also have been a side effect of an overdose of neurochemicals from the pain of the gunshot wound.

I was wondering a while back if Flask's unusual stature and humanoid figure was a side-effect of her infatuation and the resulting oxytocin that must have been flooding her system.

Doc's last thoughts as a human were along the lines of "well, fuck it."
>>
>>83607698
>Uh, hey dude
>Want some pizza?
>>
>>83607561
SEWER SURFIN'
>>
>>83611177
Maybe it's your last conscious thoughts before you mutate that affect your eventual shape?

Holly -> "I wish I could just run away from all this." -> Mouse
Doc -> "Fuck it." -> Honey badger?
Wally -> "I want to walk away from this and never come back" -> Cat
Kirbee -> "I'ma just lie here and enjoy this show" -> Lizard
Ethel -> "How can I slither my way up our housewifey social hierarchy...?"

Which would mean that the abominations are the product of a continual feedback loop between the mutation process drawing direction from the last thought in the mind's "buffer" and the mind panicking and adding yet another last thought onto there. Eventually the feedback degrades both processes (the mind deteriorates as the body warps, and the mutation warps even worse as the mind deteriorates).

Drug users probably undergo a more measured version of what happens to abominations - less panicky, more calm and introspective, but still really "out there".
>>
>>83611572
What about the typhoids? What's your theory on that?
>>
>>83611624

Al : uhg... crap, late for work again... gustine? why is there a rhino on our bed?
>>
>>83611624
Hmmm... possibly they have a very strong sense of identity that gets impressed upon every thought they have? They could be continually mutating into themselves... this could be proven if we see a Typhoid Mary show the rapid mutant healing factor.

Maybe they have a very short-lived or no buffer, so the mutation agent never has anything to grasp onto? They could be people who live entirely "within the moment". Does Al seem the type? Stillwater did... very impulsive.

Could even be multiple reasons. Anything that would prevent the mutation process from "hooking in".
>>
>>83611572
How does exactly thinking "Fuck it" before mutating transforms you into a badger? Also, what if some abilities you have as a human affect your mutation too? For example Holly: for being a woman with some months of pregnancy she ran very fast to put herself save of the explotion in the Ethel's house.

He does light touches of character comedy inside moments of darkness quite well. That recent vignette in the kitchen comes to mind.

She needed that hug to bring her back to reality

it seems to be a reoccurring thing. Without a hug for a long period of time, Holly regresses into depression and madness. See how a hug has taken the edge off of her most severe breakdown to date... although it was not enough
>>
>>83616452
That might also work. I'm wondering if it's like Roxie, where she was originally supposed to be a meerkat but Aaron didn't think he'd made her look right and then, IIRC, someone said "Stoat?" and he was like, "sure, let's go with that".

Maybe the Doc was originally a wombat but Aaron thought that his American readership wouldn't recognise the species, so he got retconned to "badger"...

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure Aaron said the rules for what can be an anthro are something along the lines of "It or something like it must have appeared in a cartoon *and* be easily recognisable to the readers". Hence the theoretical, not-seen-yet dinosaurs being limited to, if memory serves, brontosaurs (like the famous Gertie) and... maybe T-Rexes? There was someone around here who had the inside story on dinos, I may be misremembering.

>>83622884
It's hard to tell, Doc refers to him as Xavier while Mallard calls him Doctor, so maybe or not they know each other with anteriority. I hope that when we go back to Endtown we get to see more of this two fighting.

In fact, he might be the one to bring them to Endtown. He is heralded as everyone's savior there, at least in film.
>>

Most mutants were brought to Endtown by Walter when they escaped from Pep stadium, that's why he was made mayor. It's possible that he received help form Mallard tho.

>He is heralded as everyone's savior there, at least in film.
That's because he, being the most super intelligent resident of Entown, built most of the infrastructure of the place, and the movie is only there to feed his ego even Wally mentions it.

I'm sure it'll all be explained in time once we learn the details of the "virus".

I'd find that narratively unsatisfying, considering where it came from and how it works are likely some of the lynchpins of the backstory, especially in that the Topsiders have built so much of their rhetoric around "eradicating" it.

I think we'll eventually get an answer, though, since Aaron has dropped a shitload of hints as to how it works and made one or two references to things eventually being revealed (like the answer to "What happened to all the ordinary animals?").

That and laser and traditional weapons kinda coexisted pre-war. They probably found a stockpile within the area.

No, Zero Guns are post-war, topsider exclusive. Amesworth tanks were the most portable thing before that.

Bullets were still in heavy use and Apex had plenty of them. Mallard used to work for Apex so he must've had a box or two. The question is, why did he give the rats that firepower?

>it was on an email i think, but yeah, at least male genitals are anatomically correct

>"anatomically correct"

I'd love to see this email, because I think I see how this could be based on a misinterpretation:

>Fan emails Aaron asking if anthros are "anatomically correct", meaning "do they have animal genitals?"

>Aaron reads the email, and not being in a particularly furry frame of mind, reads the "anatomically correct" question as meaning "Do they have genitals at all or are they like Ken and Barbie?"

>Aaron answers yes, they are "anatomically correct".

>Fans jump on the idea of catdick, coondick and cloacae.

I'd laugh if the people here are going full furry re: the equipment of the Endtown populace based on a misinterpretation. Of course, Jim's "OH GOD" certainly spoke of *some* personal discovery...

>>
>>83652266
Aaron might have considered it a sensible question to ask since a lot of cartoon animals lack anatomy and he's said anthro-ness in Endtown runs on "cartoon logic".

Obviously they're equipped, there might have just been a mutual language-based misunderstanding between Aaron and the fandom re: the nature of the equipment...
>>
>>83652628
Aaron doesn't really care about animal genitals as much as some /co/ users do

in fact, most animal breeders don't care about animal genitals as much as some /co/ users do. Most ANIMALS don't care about animal genitals as much as some /co/ users do.

>>
>>83655953
>>83655970
You're taking this way too seriously. Furry is not a cult (or at least not -that- kind of cult), it's just people going "I like that cartoon animal very much". The "community" is just a bunch of persons that share that idea in one way or another but not all the same. Something that is popular with furries tends to be popular in general (though not everything, of course).

And the number of furries that hate MLP is pretty much proportional to the number of other people that do. Again, BEING FURRY DID NOT INFLUENCE MUCH PEOPLE INTO LIKING THE SHOW. In fact, the main sites tended to show disdain towards it because it brought a lot of new blood that just cared about ponies.

>>83655986
A lot of the more fucked in the head furries became bronies
Source: your ass. If you actually have artists in mind, they just seem worse because they do MLP. If they didn't, you wouldn't care. "People" like PK are horrible no matter what they do.

>a lot of furry artists won't do mlp shit because of how shitty the people who commissioned that stuff were
That IS true because FiM does incite fans into making donut steels with every pony using almost the same template. Iit was inevitable that artists would be flooded with requests. It was pretty much the Sonic Fandom all over again in that regard.

What I mean is, the MLP fandom overlaps with furries in general as much as stuff like Pokémon, Sonic or Animal Crossing does. Believing otherwise is just stupid bias.

I found out about this comic 3 days ago(this thread). When I started, I didn't know it started in fucking 2009. Currently I am just past the all lizard colony.

>What I wanted to ask, though, is what the fuck is up with Aaron marx? Is he just a cop out character or something? Everytime he shows up, I grown and almost dont want to continue.

Aaron Marx is Aaron Neathery's DMPC.

Imagine Endtown is a roleplaying game, Dungeons and Dragons or something, being livestreamed to an audience, and all the characters are players. Aaron Neathery is the DM, and he's one of the best DM's ever - he can do actual plot, he's great at adventure hooks, he encourages the players to really develop their characters and role-play, and he's created a great setting with lots of unique features.

But if he has one flaw, it's that he tends to deus-ex situations that are getting complicated, and the audience, if not the players, generally know by now when he's going to do it because he'll always whip out this one pet DMPC he has - a min/maxed Kender Sorcerer with abilities from obscure splatbooks and a long and involved backstory nobody really cares to read.

This character was likely based on a PC the DM used to play himself, is highly annoying and obnoxious, and nobody's sure why the DM seems to be so in love with him. Nostalgia? Power-tripping? Skewed viewpoint?

As the campaign progresses, it slowly becomes clear that the DMPC is tightly integrated with the plot, causing some to despair, but the game is still so good aside from that that they stick around anyway.

For a non-metaphorical explanation, he's a character Aaron's been writing since middleschool. He's always been annoying, but Aaron seems to greatly enjoy writing him. He feels as though he might have once been an imaginary pal or childhood alter-ego (and we sometimes joke that he's Aaron's tulpa). A lot of us find him irritating and and wish he wasn't in the comic, but it is what it is, and it looks like we're eventually going to be exposed to a lot more of him, so buckle up and hope the rest of the comic makes up for it (it has so far).

At this point he's not really updating late since he's been doing it for a while now.

And it's not like it ain't justified, drawing Hillside and all the action seems a lot more complicated than just the dust, the sky and someone running for their lives.
>>

>>
>>83665217
I don't think that someone would binge the entire comic just to end up saying "nah".

Though there was that one guy some weeks ago that said Aaron's storytelling was flawed over some bullshit reasons.
>>
>>83665128

Alright. Ill start with the first arc with al and the rhino. This arc is what made me finish the comic no matter what. I was so enthralled by the story, the backstabbing of that one ex-apex dude, that I knew aaron was a good writer. However, during this story line, i noticed some weird things such as how some situations were easily handled by extraordinary means. In my mind, I thought that it was either a fluke or one time thing, or that is how aaron solves complex problems. Turns out it was the latter.

Going on to the cat dude, I totally thought it was a flash back in the begining as how the panel before the cat story was flask in darkness. However, i think that is just me being stupid.

Just writing this, I think I would have to write a lot, lot more about this, so I will sum it up quickly.

I think Marx is a huge fucking mistake that almost made me stop reading. I hate what he did to Holly who used to be my favorite character. I miss Flask. Those robots are creepy as fuck, but make for a good tone setter. The trial lagged on for too long and was a total fucking cop out that marx was the high counsel the whole time. That made me super mad.

I am glad they are out of Endtown, though endtowns fate doesn't seem right. It is too early to go back to a system of which they lived through.

Anything else you want to know?

Flask was right. Kill all outsiders
>>
>>83665313

Oh yeah. I dont understand how the Racoon knew all that stuff nor do I know how he lived. That seems weird.

Actually, the whole Lizard capital was kind of iffy. But at least it answered a few questions I had. Also, a great character came out of it and a not so great one.

So...I dont know. There is some great stuff and some really bad stuff.

One last thing, though. I find it weird that some of the characters change their 'character' at the drop of a hat. I find that very jarring.
>>
>>83665524
>Oh yeah. I dont understand how the Racoon knew all that stuff nor do I know how he lived. That seems weird.

IIRC that required an email explanation. Long story short: His moment of schism allowed him to be possessed by, and play the part of the first appearance of, the comic's Big Bad, "Eye/I", an entity which can see through the "veil", which appears to be either the barrier between the present and the future, or the barrier between alternate universes (and some of these universe are at different effective time-points, so seeing into them is like seeing the past/future anyway) and who seems to desire that lots of people suffer and die in unpleasant ways. Eye may be linked to the mutations, as it seems to regard anthros as its "wayward children".

I suppose that you are talking about Kirbee and Chic here, any reason why you don't considere one them not so great? I will admit that in my point of view Kirbee is good while Chic is meh as characters.
>>

>I will admit that in my point of view Kirbee is good while Chic is meh as characters.

Child characters never work. Plus, he doesn't have a personality. I know one might say, it is coming, but at least a shell of a personality should be present. All I see of him right now is...I dont know. He tries to do good? Fuck they all have that quality.

Kirbee is great though. An innocent in that kind of world is really the best.
