Yeah, a lot of the aspects of both The Shadow and Batman can be found in a bunch of characters. If anything that just proves that they're both derivative. But given that Batman shares so many of the same traits, especially early Batman, and that Batman was created during the height of The Shadows popularity, is it really reasonable to say Batman took no inspiration from the character? Obviously Batman has changed into a character that is very different from The Shadow today, but the original Batman stories share so many specific similarities that I don't think it's unfair to compare the two.

Inspiration is not the same thing as straight ripping off, anon. The detective stories that Batman borrowed ideas from borrowed ideas from Sherlock Holmes. Additionally, the dialogue in which Batman explains to Robin how he figured out the mystery of the week is very reminiscent of the conversations between Holmes and Watson. If you really break down characters enough, you can describe pretty much all of them as a mix of different, older characters. Which is actually fine; a lot of fiction is less presenting new ideas and more taking old ideas but combining and presenting them in new ways

I don't really see how I was unreasonable. I stated several times that there is a lot of evidence to SUGGEST that Batman took heavy inspiration from The Shadow, not that it is 100% undeniable fact that Batman is a Shadow ripoff. The alternative to suggesting that Batman did not take inspiration from The Shadow would leave us with two options. One, he was inspired by a myriad of other characters that are even more forgotten and obscure than The Shadow that shared similar traits. Two, Batman is a completely original character and any similarities with other characters such as The Shadow are purely coincidental. Both of these options are way more convoluted and less likely than the notion that Batman was inspired by a popular pulp character that he shares many similarities with. Oh well, it was fun discussing this I suppose, even if I never got a clear answer on how mediums can influence other mediums

Hell yeah, but I'm not arguing about whether The Shadow as a character still holds up today, I'm more concerned about it's influence.
