is it wrong that I like that costume?
>>
>>83540065
I love that suit. It's weird, while it has tons of actual edges the designe looks better than back in the day.
>>
>>83540065

Isn't that the costume that the St. Dumas guy used for his batman run.

I really liked those comics. The part where Gordon freaks out because batman is still there after he turns around is fucking golden.

why were golden age heroes so edgy?

>"The Shadow" - One of the most popular radio shows in history. The show went on the air in August of 1930.

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" The opening lines of the "Detective Story" program captivated listeners and are instantly recognizable even today. Originally the narrator of the series of macabre tales, the eerie voice known as The Shadow became so popular to listeners that "Detective Story" was soon renamed "The Shadow," and the narrator became the star of the old-time mystery radio series, which ran until 1954.

There's also been various comic series running pretty much non-stop for decades. You not liking something doesn't mean no one else does.

He has a hat and a cape (different from what The Shadow wears), and a sword and a whip, fighting dudes who use lances and flintlocks. He's an anti-government revolutionary like a less-pretentious "V", or a Robin Hood, as opposed to The Shadow, who is a dark hard-nosed, crime-fighting, two-gun Punisher-esque character with a touch of "Oriental mysticism" thrown in.

>The conventions are entirely different.
In what way? I'm failing to see how comics are so radically different from pulp fiction that there is no way that Batman could be heavily inspired by The Shadow. Yes, comics are a visual medium, but Batman is ultimately trying to do the same thing as The Shadow, which is to tell a story. Batman just uses pictures and words while The Shadow used exclusively words aside from the cover art.
>>
>>83551184
>>83551188

You have no idea how comics work of the language of comic.
All of those are not only superficial and common literary tropes but it's not a ripoff since you can't ripoff from an entirely different media. Batman stands on his own.
>>
>>83551188
He actually doesn't seem to understand that the pulps were the direct progenitor of comics. The early comics were rife with pulp conventions, especially the Charles Atlas Superhero.

Take a pint of Sherlock Holmes, a pint of the Shadow, stir in a few jiggers each of Doc Savage and The Avenger, have Zorro spit into it, and you've got Batman.

>>83551156
>his design is edgy as fuck

>>
>>83551184
>>both travel to asia for training

>>
>>83551233
Yeah, many of those are literary tropes, but when so many of the same literary tropes are repeated between two different characters, can you really dismiss it all as superficial? Also, can you please explain your reasoning on how one form of media can not ripoff another? Because I'm pretty sure if you wrote a novel that's main character was a near copy of Batman with several aspects altered slightly it would be considered a ripoff. I'm not even arguing that Batman did that in regards to The Shadow, I just fail to see how ripoffs are impossible between mediums.

I love Batman, I think he's a great character, but to deny his stylistic and narrative origins in pulp characters like The Shadow is just dumb. To suggest that comics cannot borrow significant elements from other forms of media is absurd, considering how the aesthetics and raw ideas of comic characters and worlds can definitely be portrayed in a text only format; do deny this would be to deny the ability of words to conjurer up images in our imagination. It's like saying that cyberpunk comics owe nothing to Neuromancer and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.
>>
>>83552997
Your devotion to defend the honor of some archaic dinosaur from the dark ages of superheroism lead me to believe you don't really love Batman that much. Leave The Shadow in the depths of deserved obscurity where he belongs and stop white knighting him.

But he doesn't. Shadow not only has no issue killing, he goes out of his way to torment and break people. Batman does that because it's how he can do what he does without lethal force. The Shadow does it because he wants to.

As I said, he does nothing that Batman doesn't do better. The Shadow is clearly just edgy whereas Batman is, ya know, a hero.

Yeah, a lot of the aspects of both The Shadow and Batman can be found in a bunch of characters. If anything that just proves that they're both derivative. But given that Batman shares so many of the same traits, especially early Batman, and that Batman was created during the height of The Shadows popularity, is it really reasonable to say Batman took no inspiration from the character? Obviously Batman has changed into a character that is very different from The Shadow today, but the original Batman stories share so many specific similarities that I don't think it's unfair to compare the two.

They're both vigilante millionaires that use darkness to their advantage and fight crime due to a trauma in their past. Additionally, the both dress in black and use secret identities to aid in their crime fighting. As was already mentioned in a previous both, early Batman uses the same gun as The Shadow. I don't think that Batman is a 1:1 ripoff of The Shadow, but I think there's enough to suggest that the character influenced Bob Kane and Bill Finger. While many characters may have these traits, it should be noted that The Shadow was one of the most popular characters at the time to embody these traits.
>>
>>83554246
Still just assumption. I can say Batman ripped off Sherlock Holmes because they're both detectives. The Shadow was also never popular, not like you're making him sound. Finger and Kane most likely would've seen no need to dredge for ideas from some obscure pulp character.
>>
>>83554323
But pulp fiction had a huge impact on the development of comic genres, why wouldn't Finger and Kane look to them for inspiration? Also, are suggesting that Batman wasn't influenced by Sherlock Holmes stories at all?

Inspiration is not the same thing as straight ripping off, anon. The detective stories that Batman borrowed ideas from borrowed ideas from Sherlock Holmes. Additionally, the dialogue in which Batman explains to Robin how he figured out the mystery of the week is very reminiscent of the conversations between Holmes and Watson. If you really break down characters enough, you can describe pretty much all of them as a mix of different, older characters. Which is actually fine; a lot of fiction is less presenting new ideas and more taking old ideas but combining and presenting them in new ways

I don't really see how I was unreasonable. I stated several times that there is a lot of evidence to SUGGEST that Batman took heavy inspiration from The Shadow, not that it is 100% undeniable fact that Batman is a Shadow ripoff. The alternative to suggesting that Batman did not take inspiration from The Shadow would leave us with two options. One, he was inspired by a myriad of other characters that are even more forgotten and obscure than The Shadow that shared similar traits. Two, Batman is a completely original character and any similarities with other characters such as The Shadow are purely coincidental. Both of these options are way more convoluted and less likely than the notion that Batman was inspired by a popular pulp character that he shares many similarities with. Oh well, it was fun discussing this I suppose, even if I never got a clear answer on how mediums can influence other mediums

>>83557007
Occam's razor is why it is hard to believe. It's such a more complex and unlikely scenario than the creators drawing influence from a form of media that is well known to have an influence on early superhero comics.

It also seems weird that everyone is calling The Shadow pulp garbage when early superhero comics were about the same level of written quality as pulp stuff. Have any of you guys read the very first Batman comics and then read some of The Shadow's stuff? It's really not that outrageously different
>>
>>83557007
>Would Batman had endured nearly 80 years if he was REALLY a ripoff of some obscure pulp garbage?

Yes. The answer to your question is yes. Because Batman kept expanding beyond the works he was derived from.

And I thought you were done.
>>
>>83557422
The Shadow was and still is a generic bang bang shoot em up vigilante, Punisher done much worse. Batman was something nobody had seen before hence his longevity and fame to this day.

>when early superhero comics were about the same level of written quality as pulp stuff

No, they were on a much higher and far more imaginative level. And they've changed over the decades. Pulp shit is always gonna be pulp shit.
>>
>>83557466
The Shadow was one of the characters that helped to establish the generic vigilante character aspects that we see in characters like Punisher today. Is The Shadow outdated? Hell yeah, but I'm not arguing about whether The Shadow as a character still holds up today, I'm more concerned about it's influence. I'm not expecting people to read the old stories or put the character on some pedestal, but I think we should acknowledge the origins for a lot of the ideas that fuel our favourite comic book heroes.

I also feel that a big reason why Batman endured so much is that as a character, he adapted and changed as time went on, while The Shadow did not. Also, Batman started off as a comic character, which is a medium that has maintained relevance much greater than the pulp fiction and radio shows that defined The Shadow.
>>
>>83557771
Why do you get so butthurt about people not liking the same character as you when you yourself admit it's outdated garbage?

>When Bob Kane and Bill Finger first conceived of the "Bat-Man", Finger suggested they pattern the character after pulp mystery men such as The Shadow.[3] Finger then used "Partners of Peril"[28]—a Shadow pulp written by Theodore Tinsley—as the basis for Batman's debut story, "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate."[29] Finger later publicly acknowledged that "my first Batman script was a take-off on a Shadow story"[30] and that "Batman was originally written in the style of the pulps."[31] This influence was further evident with Batman showing little remorse over killing or maiming criminals and not being above using firearms.[31] Decades later, noted comic book writer Dennis O'Neil would have Batman and The Shadow meet in Batman #253 (November 1973) and Batman #259 (December 1974) to solve crimes.[32] In the former, Batman acknowledged that The Shadow was his biggest influence.[33]

You're joking, right?

I have never seen Will Smith look so obviously bored playing a character before. He looked more engaged in friggin' After Earth, a movie he specifically contracted to take a step back and try to jump start his kid's acting career.

The re-writes are painfully obvious, too. In that, "Everyone hated BvS?! FUCK! ADD JOKES! FUCKING LOTS OF JOKES!" kind of way.

The whole thing looks downright terrible.
>>
>>83571781
Smith lived up to the memes in every way, and was easily the worst part. That doesn't mean everything else will necessarily be terrible though. Quips and Literally Whos worked for Guardians. I know the two are apples and oranges but maybe if they rip Marvel off as hard as possible...

I would.

That's bad, but not Spider-Armor bad.
>>
>>83541052
Scarlet Spider's design isn't really edgy, just outdated. You can tell that shits from the 90s by a glance.

>Dracula? Phantom of the Opera? Every other generic private eye detective form that era?

Dracula and PotO are not pulp crimefighters.

Most detectives/private eyes wore fedoras & trenchcoats, not opera cloaks, slouch hats, and scarves.

I...I have to admit that I love utility-belts and pouches. Every time I make up a comic or RPG character, I festoon them with pouches.

I am Anon, and I have a problem.

Doom Force is fucking hilarious. It was a special one shot for Morrison's Doom Patrol run devoted to taking the piss out of edgy 90's comics and special collector's editions, X-Force in particular.

No thanks

Forcibly changed to killing machine against will and the struggle to co-exist with society is deep. Like Rambo but with giant robots.

This is an unfair image because Lobdell has some kind of magical ability to make even the worst costumes look good.

The only real problems with the costume is the flat grey panel on the chest and abdomen and the weird boots. Put the entire upper body in the feathers and giver her birdlike feet with talons and it would have been great.

You are being vastly more annoying than anyone you're attempting to make fun of and it's bringing absolutely nothing positive, including in the context of satire, to this discussion. I have gained more respect for the targets of your comments for having to deal with people like you.
