Often he places the entire punchline throughout the whole strip. The joke is in the situation/conversation itself. It's kind of a staple in slice of life comics I think. Helps the authors toss a bit of sugar into the big ol' grapefruit that is the big dramatic reveal of the month.

There's nothing that'd require help from a friend in that comic though, everything in the last panel could have just as well been drawn from ten minutes of skimming Wikipedia pages. It has nothing to do with how "correct the science" is because any author with an iota of self-respect or respect for his fans would be topical and discreet with his high-brow jokes. When Jeph wants a to write an intelligent joke, he throws subtlety out the window so that the female character he's using as a mouthpiece can say completely something unrelated about computer science, poetry, indie rock bands, or in this case - quantum bullshitery. Everything reads like an anti-joke.
