I really never got why Mike wasn't considered scary. Not only could a one-eyed gremlin easily be considered frightening by some, but it's a heck of a lot scarier looking than some of the other "scary" monsters.

If anything, I feel like MU enhances the potential of an actual sequel in that it really makes scaring feel like a much bigger cultural thing outside just it being an energy source. A Monsters Inc 2 could get into the culture clash that laugh energy harnessing will have inevitably created. What do scarers do if they don't have the comic chops to succeed or feel like this is beneath them? Do the other scaring companies try to sabotage MI? What happens to human perception of monsters?

I like MU because without it Mike comes across as a bit of a dick in the first film. You wonder why the hell Sully would be friends with him to begin with and MU shows what they both had to give up and sacrifice and how it made them firm friends. In Inc. Mike's just a driven career guy, after MU you know that helping Sully break the all time Scare Record is the closest he'll ever get to fulfilling his own childhood dreams. I'm not saying they intended that in the first film but the prequel does retroactively make it better.

I liked Mike more as the protagonist than Sully.
Sully was likeable and all but with Mike they took the highly flawed, comedic foil and added layers to him which made him more interesting. Not to mention he's highly motivated.

It's not so much about appearance. Sully might be big, but he's also covered in fucking polka dots. But he roars like holy fuck and leans into it to look as threatening as possible. That doughy kid looked pretty lame, but he managed a great scaring act by just staying silent and being creepy. Mike just can't do that, his screams are little pathetic squeals as much as he tries, and that immediately deflates any scare his appearance might have given.
