What's different about how shows portray bullies is that most bullying, or at least the most effective bullying, isn't usually physical. Not many people get wedgied or swirlied or shoved into a locker. They just pick at your insecurities or wear you down until you feel like a worthless piece of shit. Mostly in some online form these days.
And female bullies blow male ones out of the water with their ability to do this. Girls have self worth and image issues that boys don't quite have an equivalent to and other girls know exactly how to poke at them. Teenage girl bullies are savage as hell.
