Depends what you expect from it. Narratively it's not strong but it's pretty kino in the unironical sense of the term, as it's a work of (mostly visual) experimentation rather than a work aimed to entertain.
Kind of like the Fantasia movies or The Prophet if you will, except with visual expermentation much more applicable to other works in terms of how you depict architecture for instance. Miyazaki's mention of verticality is exemplary of that.
Fuck I can't explain it right but maybe comparing it to Orson Wells' The Trial, Fritz Lang's Metropolis or Chaplin's Modern Times can help, it codified certain visual things when it comes to depicting society through environment, specifically oppressive visuals.

Awesome, solid C+ for me. My parents are Canadian "immigrants" so I picked up a little French growing up, bu they insisted I learn Spanish in high school since we lived in San Diego.
And I am loving this thread...trying to explain to all my weeaboo buddies why I'm such a Eurofag gets tedious, so it's nice to see others who appreciate it. I loves me some manga and anime, really, but the euro scene is SO good sometimes that I wish it got more exposure here in the States, not just the French stuff either.
