It takes a significantly smaller amount of time to create offspring gems, you have control over what the offspring will be and it's progeny(Two Jaspers = Jasper baby, One Ruby and One Sapphire = One Garnet, etc), and it takes the same amount of pre existing Gem material (Rose Quartz death for Steven, Peridot's comment on being "harvested")

The thing about that is Greg didn't take Rose from Pearl. Rose took Rose from Pearl. She didn't tell Greg that having a son would kill her until it was too late. I've always been really uncomfortable with her choices here. Dying to have a child was reckless and it broke the hearts of everyone close to her, and it gave the Crystal Gems an infant to replace the leader they needed. If things had gone just a bit differently, Earth could have been destroyed because of this.
