If you want to read a bunch in order, a good place to hit is the Parobeck short run in the 90s, realize they got fucked up by Zero Hour, then Robinson Starman, Johns Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., into Robinson/Goyer (yes, that Goyer)/Johns JSA.

I haven't read, but Johns wrote it from 1999-2008, so probably that

How dependent is Johns' run on past knowledge of the characters? A lot of his stuff is very continuity heavy.

I used to have a list that gave a coherent arc across history
it started with their formation in DC Special #28, then with the liberty files, how the original jsa faded away with the Silver Age and then the modern jsa by Johns

Johns is good at referencing old stuff in an introductory way. You'll be fine. There's even times where he creates a villain and references a past adventure that didn't happen but it doesn't stick out unless you wikipedia it.

Is All Star Squadron worth reading? What about Young All Stars?
I also read Sandman Mystery Theater. It's pretty good. Housman, Starman, Crimson Avenger and Blackhawk show up from time to time in that.
