Let's finish this, lads
Part 1:
>>83092272
>>83125534
Go man, go
Did anyone else play that shitty Watchmen vidya?
I played it with a friend, he was Rorschach and I was Nite Owl. There was a point were I got literally stuck to the ground and couldn't get out so we reset the game but I ragequit and we never played it again since.
I also played the mobile game, that one was kinda fun.
>>83125534
I thought that was Manhattan's dick and balls being reflected in someone's one from the thumbnail
>>83125959
i just recently got into watchmen, and tried to download the mobile game but alas it was taken down from the app store.
>>83126096
That sucks, but I'm pretty sure you can find it somewhere online.
>>83126096
dude
>>83125809
This is such a fun chapter. Laurie's funny in this one.
>insert unnecessarily long sex scene here in case of movie adaptation
>>83127295
NOW I'VE HEARD THAT THERE WAS A SECRET CHORD
Is there any psych anon who would know what kind of disorders Rorschach has? Does he exhibit any specific symptoms of a mental illness, or is he just generically crazy?
>>83122770
>>83125534
I've been there.
It is really easy to keep drawing connections until you've soerged out multi layer insanity
Lord knows half of my writings are like that
>>83127538
I'd say he definitely has PTSD. I also got a sexual abuse/rape survivor vibe from some of his reactions re: sex and women.
Other than that, who knows.
>>83127421
>>83127295
I actually do enjoy Zack picking up on Watchmen's total lack of subtly.
Its like a fruitcake, dense and conspicuous.
>>83125880
I recall playing the demo, that's it.
>>83127810
i read somewhere that originally, it wasn't leonard cohen's version of hallelujah- it was a female singer. test audiences' reactions were extremely positive, and most got the vibe that the characters "really loved each other", and snyder changed it to cohen just to fuck with them. i don't know how well i can trust the veracity of that anecdote, but it seems like something snyder would do.
Once again, thanks OP. I love this book and I love talking about it.
>>83127974
My friend bought it because he's a sucker for all things Watchmen, doesn't even care that Moore disaproves, he just loves the universe that much.
>>83128036
No problem anon
>>83125688
>A mechanic flying owl mobile
>It probably has a dash lighter
>>83128015
Just to fuck with who?
>>83128162
audiences, because he's an edgelord like that, i suppose
Would it be weird to do Pax Americana next in order to compare?
I still have no fucking idea where Grant was going with the Ultimates riff?
Like my bet guess is Ultimates did to avengers what Watchmen did to Charlton but instead of 80s anti government it was 00s pro government.
But that still doesnt tell me what the point of it in the story was.
Ita like a joke with no puncline
>>83128161
Also, I feel dumb for not realizing they have sex after she lights the flame literally.
>>83128244
Yeah, it's basically his 21st century Watchmen, with a war on terror vibe.
>>83128327
But it has literally zero to do with the war on terror or the ultimates or much of anything besides the Presidents suicide pact and Question and Atom having cute for a few pages.
Seriously he blew four pages just to say "Superheroes are done, time for the army to take over" in a really tryhard way, and yet that plotpoint goes no where.
Pax in 40 issues has almost nothing happen it seemed like grant just wanted to fuck with frank for three years making him draw insanely detailed yet meaning light, graphics and symbology.
Its Hilarious, every one goes on about folks missing the appeal of Watchmen and just cping its edge. But Grant misses the point in the entire opposite direction.
Its like Finnegans Wake translated into Simlish
It's funny how this series also gives us a peak into the musical tastes of Moore.
>>83127810
Seriously, you can't beat Ozzy watching Nite Owl and Rorschach fly across Antarctica to All Along the Watchtower
>>83128459
Just a reminder that Manson died cuz Dan can't get a boner without his sick fetish
>>83128496
Yeah, the format means there's not much story there. I do like the idea of the government essentially creating the thing that destroyed it.
>>83128561
Is this Ben Garrison?
>>83128561
>crying liberty
based gibbons
>>83128408
>>83128459
I don't like this story anymore!
>>83128561
Kelly reference? Moore and Gibbons confirmed for bros.
>>83128622
I have no idea why grant would try to do a watchmen riff in 40 pages and not come correct.
If you get past the obvious flaw and have the time, id recommend the motion comic

How the fuck did Veidt get away with licensing toys based on the other heroes?
Shouldn't Dan and Rorscach be getting royalties for this? God knows Rorschach could use them.
>>83131762
God this fight is satisfying, I love me some trained badass effortlessly fucking over tryhards who haven't worked for it. Moore probably hates me for saying shit like that but whatever

keep in mind when this book was written.
the 1990 lawsuit craze hadn't started yet.
A lot of won lawsuits in the late 80's/early 90's paved the way to the madness we have now with royalties and trademarking
>>83131801
Rorschach disparaged Veidt for selling out, and is nuts enough that he wouldn't want that money.
Dan is probably too much of a nice guy to get upset over it, and Veidt probably wouldn't be above giving Dan money under the table if he really pushed.
Legally, they can't do shit because going to court would mean outing themselves, and the inevitable legal grey of "owning" an illegal persona.

The entire chapter has been switching between New York and Adrian, the wide panels, the dialogue in panel 1, the reactions in the second panel, the 11:59 time in New York, and the silent cut to the city; It's incredibly tense and even without turning, you know what's coming.

There we go panel 6 the best panel in this story that look of joy is priceless.
I would go so far as to say its the best look of joy I have ever seen in a comic certainly not the best panel I have read that honer goes to wonder women punching somebody so hard they fly of without there mask but easily the best look of joy
>>83132909

They do in the movie. Dan goes apeshit and beats Veidt up. It's glorious and the closest resolution you'll get to his friendship with Rorschach.

Maybe if Snyder didn't spend so much screentime on the first sex scene, he would have had enough time to wrap up the "hiroshima lover" motif with this one.

>>83133131

>>83133087
Moore says no. No one does according to him. He wanted Rorschach's fate to be washed away overtime where the cast might muse about what happen to him only to go back to their busy lives.

>>83133213
>He wanted Rorschach's fate to be washed away overtime where the cast might muse about what happen to him only to go back to their busy lives.
Jesus Christ, does Moore have even a speck of sympathy for Rorschach? I'm pretty sure I've seen fans who actually see him more as a complex person than whatever Moore perceives him as.
>>83133286
Maybe it's a Black Canary reference? Dinah Laurel Lance.
>>83133131
Thanks for the storytime OP. I re-read it myself every so often and it was nice to read it with people this time.
>>83133213
I personally took that to be the case. Rorschach always contacted Dan and crew, not vice-versa, and they could easily believe that he would break contact over something that big. One of the big lessons of the book is that life goes on, so they probably were curious/worried, but couldn't mope about it forever.
>>83133350
I see it as being less about shitting on Rorschach and more about Dan and Laurie refusing to go down that rabbit hole again. Deep down they probably know he's dead, but instead of investigating further, they'd rather accept things as they are.
>>83133387
>>83133486
I mean... Assumably the owlship was still there when Dan and Laurie left, so they knew he didn't leave Antarctica. They could pretty easily figure out that he's at least dead, if not necessarily killed by Manhattan/Ozy.
>>83133319
>don't really make any effort to find out why or try to help
What can he really do, though? I'm fairly certain Rorschach never told him what went down with Blair Roche, so from his perspective, it just looked like his friend turned into a huge asshole. He doesn't really have a lot of options if Rorschach wasn't willing to let him in.
>don't even ask what happened to him when he storms off to expose an earthshattering secret that will threaten world peace
This pissed me off too, but it leads nicely into this—
>instead, go off and fuck some slut who will in all likelihood end up ditching you like she did her last bf
Dan's a huge fuck-up. He has his morals in order, sure, but at the end of the day he's self-absorbed and weak willed. If he stopped obsessing over his own petty problems and took Rorschach's mask killing theory more seriously, they might have teamed up sooner and had a better chance at stopping Veidt.
His ending with Laurie is pretty good in that regard. He ends up getting what he wants at a horrible cost, and if you take Manhattan's last words to heart about nothing ever ending, he might find himself facing the same problems he had at the start of the story again.
>>83133350
The consensus I've noticed is that most people see Rorschach for what he is — a victim of horrible life circumstances and trauma, and ultimately not a bad person, just a very sick one — but there's a lot of spite held for anyone who sympathizes with him because of a very loud minority of edgelords who idolize him and think he's completely right.
We were talking about this in the last thread and how much of a shame it is that people just summarize him as a psycho, smelly bum and leave it at that. He's really not.
>>83133350
desu it's a secret guilty hope of mine that if they do bring the rest of the cast in the main dcu they'll give him at least SOME kind of happy ending or redemption. dude deserves it after everything he goes through.
>>83131063
I pretty sure they were just fucking with us at this point
Anyvody read Dune? I've realised that Manhattan is kinda like Paul. He has knowledge of the future, but due to the fact that he can see it, he can't truly change it.
>>83134062
I'm mostly talking about Dune Messiah by the way. Dune seems to change how prescience works in every book.
>>83127714

>>83132990
I fucking love the poetry of this and Roarshach being Weisman
>>83133319
>secret
>>83134062
>>83134094
I haven't read Messiah, just the original Dune,
but the thing that makes it hard for me to have any sympathy for Manhattan is
He gets this power, he sees the future, and in the future he sees himself never try to change the future, and he just accepts that.
Nor does he ever seem to notice 'oh hey, in like sixteen years time my future vision just cuts off. Do I die? does fate great broken?'
in the first Dune Paul tried to change the future and largely failed. He saw the tribe going to bloody war under his banner, calling him Mu'adib. He wants to avoid that, so when they tell him its time to choose a new name he picks the smallest, most harmless thing he can think of, a little kangaroo rat, only for it to turn out THAT is called Mu'adib and their are praised in folklore for their cunning. The future refused to change.
Without that at least making an attempt before giving up and following the dotted line, I just can't give a crap about Manhattan as a character. and if that was intentional, then, congrats
>>83134364
Manhattan's not quite "seeing the future," though. He's seeing/experiencing all events in time at once, so he literally can't change things because it's already happening/happened.

How did everyone find the movie?
I really enjoyed it for what it was, and the different ending suited the film better. It missed out on a bunch of stuff what made the comic godlike in the first place, but it's still fine as a supplementary watch imo.
I really, really hated the over the top fighting though. The prison fight was there for the sake of 'Zack thought this would be cool' and doesn't fit in with the rest of the story at all. Also casting across the board was perfect except for Adrian

There's lots "required reading" comics but I'm not sure if there's anything as dense and self-referential as Watchmen gets
I don't know of anything like the mirrored issue, for instance
>>83138316
It did what an adaption should do, it adapted it's themes and run time to the era it was working in. The pace was a bit jumbled and the ending was poorly explained/explored without the squid but that's the nature of the story considering the squid would take another hour of exposition and doing the "blame it on God" thing works within the context of Jon distancing himself from the planet.
The comic did everyone's themes a million times better but that's mostly due to having more material to explain and it being a godtier comic. The moral ambiguity, the sense of Jon's isolation, Ozy's delusion, Rorshack's mental state, Dan being a weak willed fuck up, Laurie's acceptance an eargerness to move past the pretense that her life and continued existence is built on other's pain and suffering. Getting all of that across as well on the big screen without fucking it up from cramming too much shit in is impossible.
The fight scenes and "muh slomo shots" were absolute shit though.

That said the 'crying liberty' bit was very fucking common in political comics in the 70s and 80s during the cold war. It was suppose to evoke a feeling that the actions taken were against the American spirit/way. However much like the satire you enjoy today it got out of hand to where artists would draw Lady Liberty crying because a new smoke law passed or something just as obtuse.

Veidts end came soon with the discovery of Rorschach journal
The movie's ending is way better than the book's, there, I said it.
Framing Jon makes a lot more sense than some random giant psychic squid, prove me wrong.
>>83147733
I think the psychic squid and the conspiracy with the disappearing artists was a creative way of playing up to fears and story tropes of the time, but think that blaming Jon was a fine alternative, and ties into him leaving at the end.
And melodramatic or not, I'll admit that I actually liked that Dangot pissed over Rorschach dying and Veidt getting away with mass murder as opposed to just accepting it and going off to have sex with Laurie
