LEGOs are great though. They're a creative tool that can either be assembled into a predesignated shape or improvised with.

That and the addition of minifigures and tools/weapons/accessories really makes them a real "toy" because you can then play within whatever you've made.

I love how no-one has pointed out how strawman this is.
>Hurrrr look at the stupid liberals who have such a dumb view on the world and hate it when no-one else shares it

There is literally nothing wrong in teaching a child to think outside of the box and not allow itself to be guided by the parameters society demands of it. But that's not the preposition here. The preposition is that anyone wanting to buy their child a toy like this immediately thinks the concept of all other toys are restrictive and therefore inherently bad. Lego is a fantastic toy that few would shit on that used to literally print messages in the 70's saying that allowing kids to be creative and decide upon things for themselves is fine, and no-one shits on Lego for their lefty pinko worldview

Its just like how not every vegan thinks you're a shithead for eating meat. Most that I know just choose not to do so themselves, but you gotta keep your internet pariah memes going, amirite?

But I suppose because its against the Tumblr Lefto boogeyman its ok that its a paper thin strawman for what hippy dippy liberals think.

The joke is, I'm not even a leftisit. I voted for rightwing parties in the last 2 elections, the hypocrisy of 4chan just amuses me sometimes

Funny. I was recently complaining about the gender norms of the toy aisles. Despite the movie being garbage, it is pretty shitty that the new Ghostbusters is in the boys section and Mattel even has a boy modeling the Proton Pack on the box.

Why are girls relegated to toys like fashion dolls and kitchen playsets? Are we indotrinating women to be pretty and stay in the kitchen from young ages? Why are boys the ones expected to have war toys and action figures of neck snapping Superman with giant fists? Are we saying boys are supposed to be violent and always agressive? (That one is of course an opinion many feminist bloggers love to use too.) Why can't we have boys with kitchen playsets? As someone whose grandfathers worked in diners and bakeries cooking, it is insulting. Where are the Guy Fieri and Anthony Bourdain action figures?

Of course even I agree with this sketch making fun of these fru fru hippie dippy ideas about toys like that far in the oposite direction.

But what defines a boy or a girl is literally decided by society. With toys by big companies who make decisions based on what society thinks.

You can't legitimately think that the only reason why boys play with some toys and girls with others is due to some instinctual knowledge to know that a toy gun is a boys toy and a cuddly bunny rabbit is a girls.

I'm not saying I in any way believe in the whole "kids should be raised gender neutral" bollocks, but I am saying you're talking utter shit.

It has changed over time.

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/when-did-girls-start-wearing-pink-1370097/?c=y&page=1

Yes. Boys have a penis and girls have a vagina.

Yet most of the other shit is stuff projected on the genders by society.

Also, if you say girls shouldn't play with GI Joe toys, that is an insult to every woman who has fought in America's military.
>>
>>83115771
yes we are indoctrinating children by buying them toys and then telling them they can be whatever they want when they grow up

your implying the kids themselves don't have a choice or cant think for themselves at all. that they cant get over gender bullshit at all. I was a boy who played with barbies with one of my friends who was a girl way back. sure I knew it wasn't a boy-toy but that didnt mean i couldnt play with it. Kids buy and large don't put that much thought into bullshit. If a little boy wants to pretend to be a chef he'll pretend to be a chef toys aside.

this sort of shit is all just dumb ass assumptions people make. some one likely just assumed ghostbusters is more male oriented, and people just assume its some big conspiracy to condition childern or some bs. and they assume they can be conditioned against things that they want.

Now that is some dumbass shit.

Okay. I was mostly joking about boys being taught not to cook. As I said, I had grandfathers who worked in kitchens and bakeries. One even enlisted and worked as a chef in the army during WWII.

So the idea that cooking toys are a girls thing is fucking insulting.

Thankfully at least one of the big two toys companies have fixed things with not just girl targeted EZ Bake Ovens.

youre making so many jumps here that imply something far more nefarious than what is probably going on

that some business man who decides it should be a little boy on the box is intentionally doing so in order to perpetuate gender rolls, when really the guy is just trying to figure out the best way to make money.

marketing does not affect the way people raise their kids or the way their children are.

people consciously make those choices for themselves and are the true crux of the issue.

So what you're saying is that when parents go into a toy shop and see isles of toys ostensibly marketed at girls and aisles ostensibly marketed at boys that that wouldn't colour their judgement?

Most parents don't even consider the gender thing, they just don't want their kids to be seen as being fucking weird or faggots or whatever, they want them to fit in with other children and they know from their childhood that boys play with boys toys and girls with girls, and anyone who sits outside the social norm gets ostracised.

>>
>>83113800

>>
>>83116694
It's a vicious cycle, is the thing.

If marketers could figure out how to sell girl toys to boys, they totally would. But they can't. If parents don't teach a child what they're "supposed" to play with, that child's friends and schoolmates certainly will.

So marketers just go with the flow. But then people see the marketing, assume that's the normal way of things, and just perpetuate the situation
>>
>>83116685
Why has it taken so long for Hasbro to realize that "make snacks in your room" is a concept that appeals to both genders?
>>
>>83116830
you are generalizing every parent

no most parents want their children to be happy

plenty of adults recognize the bullshit and are just going to buy their kids whatever they want.

not saying that there arent parents that dont say "no timmy you cant play with dolls those are for girls" but thats a dying breed. as time goes on those people are going to get less and less and it wont be an issue so it shouldnt be now

>>83116865

And do you think toy companies and companies that market to kids don't think about bullshit demogrphic tests and what they think sells to girls and boys before spending millions to produce and market products?

Hell, there are entire businesses dedicated to telling marketing assholes what sells to what genders and age groups. There are firms that cook up studies about that shit.

Because suits, no matter whether they are in films, comic books, toys, music or whatever are fucking terrified of rocking the boat.

They don't want to be the fall guy behind a concept that went tits up and lost them loads of money, so what they do is they very rigidly stick to a formula that works. Boys like guns and action heroes, girls like playing house.

And the thing is with toys is that big companies will look at how well smaller companies who are more willing to take risks are doing at selling toys to various demographics, but then if because they don't have the resources necessary to properly market something and it goes belly up, its seen as a failure by Hasbro and the like and they don't go for it.

Every now and then someone will take a risk, but we only ever hear about the ones that pay off

Lego is building blocks. Fucking building blocks. Bricks. You build stuff with them. Massive stuff. Sure, there are all those minimalistic creations, where 5 blocks are supposed to be a ship, but we knew where the real stuff was. Spacecrafts, cars, buildings. And yes, this message about imagination, freedom and childlike wonder is bunch of crap, but at least they've got something to show for it. Nope.

Historically, it's because men treat cooking as a professional skill and not as a life skill.
Get a job in a kitchen, start washing dishes, two years later you end up making Neo-Hatian Fusion Haute Cuisine 60 times per night, go home at 1 AM, and have a cheese sandwich and a beer before collapsing into bed. Wake up, realize you are out of cereal, eat two slices of toast, drink a glass of juice that is starting to go off-date, and then putter around a bit before going back in to work, silently checking off days until the weekend, when they can restock their own larder. At least, as long as they are either a bachelor or only dating a girl. In which case, they will cook to impress her. Because bitches love a man who can make magic in the kitchen, but you'll do it like, once a week and not something you do at work, because fucking WORK.

Women, on the other hand, if they do not find a *passion* to go into cooking as a professional skill, will treat it as a life skill, i.e. find as many shortcuts as possible because it becomes just another daily chore. That's why my mother's favorite recipes tend to involve dumping French Onion Soup Mix on things. Occasionally, rarely, she will spend hours making a super special meal, but it's going to be some single important element that eats up the most of the time: Grandma's perogies, oh god, I ALMOST can make them, but the recipe card isn't right, and i don't know what mom does...

Oh yeah, I'm sure that no women would want the arduous task of being a computer engineer. Or a mechanic, or an electrician

Have you even considered that the reason why women "don't want to do them" is because society tells them that they are jobs for men.

It works both ways when concerning men in the care industry. Society says carers are typically women, and if a bloke does decide to become one it says something about his masculinity.

In no way was I saying that "they all secretly want to if not for that mean ol' society"

Do you honestly genuinely think that societies expectations of people play no part whatsoever in the decisions they want to make in their lives?

Because when your parents, your freinds, tv, film and the internet are all treating a job type as something you don't do, all compounding that notion back in on themselves like a feedback loop it will effect your thinking on things.

This is why when I worked in a dead end job for minimum wage in a cinema before I got my degree, it still seemed like I was doing better than someone in a dead end job in McDonalds, even though, relatively speaking McDonalds is not only a okish company to work for, but had far more opportunities for advancement

My daughter uses the tablet to watch shows on Netflix, no different to how you or I would watch a TV show as a kid, except on demand.

Right, because my post was the be all and end all of my thoughts on that matter.

But on the flipside, women had spent half a decade doing things that they had been told they literally were incapable of doing before. They became empowered and many felt that perhaps they shouldn't be content to just get back in the kitchen, perhaps they could do something with their lives.

Wanting to revert back after you've tasted that liberating freedom would be lunacy.

Absolute nonsense. In this day and age, anyone who tries and pushes a women away from STEM fields gets pilloried and made into a national story. There are literally billions of pounds of subsidies and bursaries on offer. Businesses and universities are howled at for not having enough female representation in their fields and this has been going on for decades; during the same time period, things that have existed for centuries have disappeared: religion, family structure, national identities, sense of rights and privileges, etc have all vanished. Homosexuality has been elevated from a disgusting thing into practically a desired trait. Massive, huge shifts in societal habits have occured. And yet, despite the fact that any women entering a STEM field in a Western country will be showered with support and practually assured a job at the end of it... they don't pick it. Women didn't use to be lawyers, researchers, analysts, etc. Why is the STEM field the only one that apparently is problematic because most women don't want to go into it, despite the fact that women have happily been working in it throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and that working with machinery was actually very common for women in the 19th century with the Industrial revolution, which blows your idea of society not liking girls with machines out of the water.

I'd argue the most frustrating thing for a lot of radical progressives is bluntly not understanding that many women are comfortable being home makers and comfortable living in their traditional gender roles.

this is not to say women should not be allowed outside of traditional gender roles or to perform traditionally male jobs if they're capable. But there's on odd disconnect in some people. A: religion hasn't gone anywhere and won't any time soon but it's become largely superfluous on a social level. It did a lot of social good acting as a social welfare mechanism, patron of the arts and sciences, and so on by private fields do that better now. People however are desperate for meaning in their lives and always will be so religion will never disappear.
>family structure
A social construct, and not one that's under threat or ever has been. "a wife, a husband, two children and a dog' is a convenient piece of propaganda. Single Mothers and Fathers have always existed and always will.
>National Identities
are a relatively new phenomena on a historical scale. Nationalism didn't exist 1000 years ago, dynasties revolving around charismatic people were the go to power structure once upon a time. What's one more dead nation at history's feet?

Except there is, and has been for many years, a massive push to get women involved in traditionally male industries. It's hard to say society dictates what is or isn't a male job when it's been crammed into popular consciousness that women CAN be these things.

My main problem is that there isn't a push into the shittier male dominated fields, like mining, or a push to get men into female dominated fields, like teaching. Full equality or bust.

There are legitimate toys that spark your creativity, engage you and your imagination. Legos were one of those (don't know if this is still true). And then there's the bullshit like Pinko which is a subversion of you, your imagination, your personality.

But I do not envy kids of today. In my day we used to play with sticks, rocks, leaves and so on and it was always fun for us. Growing up in a rural setting is a blessing.

Point is we strayed so much from the authentic concepts of play. Play for the sake of play, with you as the Great Architect and animator of shapes and things. No point, no "education", no retarded ideologies breathing down your neck - that is play. In a way kids are gods when they play with toys or implements. They give them life, a destiny and purpose. That inherent unthinking ability is vastly superior and purer than the shit that flows from the mouths and minds of psychologists and various other "professionals." Fuck all of that bullshit.

>or a push to get men into female dominated fields

This might just be a UK thing but I've noticed that if you are a man and applying for a primary school teacher, you're practically in.
>>
>>83122415
Its all very well and good saying women CAN be these things, but when there aren't many already it doesn't seem that way. When your mothers generation wouldn't have done it, it seems out of left field.

Or are you saying that the preconceived notion that men do mechanical jobs has absolutely no bearing whatsoever on women who might choose to be a mechanic?

As it is, I feel you misunderstand me somewhat. I'm not saying that the problem hasn't gotten better. Lord knows it has, but there is still room to improve in terms of certain jobs and the types of people it is assumed do them.

People now seek solace in brands now. Brand loyalty is the new polytheism now.

I'm not saying we didn't have and play with toys and watch cartoons. But when you're a kid in the 90s, living in a small 1 000 year+ old town in Croatia following a total war your experiences will differ from those of a kid in 90s NYC.

there isn't a single place in the bible that supports Dante's Hell. That's a work of fiction produced for the sake of entertainment and spreading one man's musings on existence. This was adopted by the church as it's easier to market 'you will get thrown in a lake of fire if you don't do what you're told' rather than 'in heaven you'll get the cheap seats if you don't do what you're told.'

I bluntly wish Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and a slew of other religions would disappear overnight. But they won't because they offer people solace.

people never went to church every day and prayed to god in terror of what was coming. Faith was always largely hypocritical and a way to make sense of a nonsensical world. In the old days if I didn't understand something I asked a priest?

Now? I have google.

Croatian war orphans would be happy to recieve a kyno or whatever. they would cherish it because the only thing they have to their names are chemical burns.

>To say that all women are weak willed and all men are strong and brave due to brain chemistry is a buncha sexist pseudo-science nonsense
Well it's a good thing that isn't what I said at all then, what a bizarre reading. Actually read up on some of baron-cohen's studies.
Men are aggressive risk takers, and dominant because brain chemicals. Woman usually lack these so they're not.

Whether they should alter this or not, is not my jurisdiction to say.

For fuck sakes, haven't you ever heard of Hyenas? Hyena daughters get lots of testosterone real young and form a Matriarchy. It's biology. This doesn't have everything to do with "Boys like blue and racecars, girls like pink and dollys", it's just acknowledging basic neuroanatomical differences.

Caitlyn Jenner is not brave.
It's easy to be 'brave' when you're rich and famous, and it's unlikely she'll ever be physically attacked, rejected or abused for her Trendy Transition.

That doesn't apply to 99% of Trans individuals.

>Do you honestly genuinely think that societies expectations of people play no part whatsoever in the decisions they want to make in their lives?
Well sure, if you're stupid? One's own class, region and general position in life determines more about your decisions than your gender does, or really any "Gender brainwashing" you believe is going on.
>>
>>83124205
>Having the planet ridicule you is not brave
>Having people in the street shouting things at you is not brave

Caitlyn Jenner is a prick of epic proportions, but to imply that "oh well she has money" is in any way a cocoon from the sheer levels of vitriol she faces is kind of short sighted.

I mean its not like there are countless people who have been rich and famous and not been able to remain happy while feeling the social pressure right?
>>
>>83124365
You're dodging the context for which this 'heckling' is coming from here. Caitlyn is a Kardashian, do you think they don't get their fair share of criticism? That they don't have people shouting obscenities and smearing them all over the news everywhere?

This would seem bad, but when framed through them is not actually a bad thing at all. They live off the fame and notoriety, and any attacks towards them are practically free publicity. This is how the Celebrity world worked.

>I mean its not like there are countless people who have been rich and famous and not been able to remain happy while feeling the social pressure right?
Maybe. But people like Kim, Catlyn and Kanye are not one of those people. You know, people with that weird thing called shame, or who require faculties such as dignity?
>>
>>83122415
Men have been pushed out of becoming teachers because apparently it's not safe for little girls to be around them. It's actually a major issue especially with more and more boys lacking any sort of male role model or guidance figure due to the rate of divorce.

The irony here is that language evolves; it isn't static. If a whole country uses the word "Legos", then it's a word, no matter how much you want to be a grammar Nazi about it.

>No anon, its just being more properly diagnosed now. Kids with a touch of the 'tism back in the day would just be consigned as being weirdo outsiders because it wasn't correctly diagnosed.

So why don't we just diagnose everyone with 'tism? If we diagnosed 100% of people with it, there'd be a 0% chance that someone 'tistic would actually miss their diagnosis or we wouldn't catch it. It's a win-win!

Sort of like how how we vaccinate everyone and give cures pre-emptively to ensure no one gets measles or diseases regardless of whether they have it or not

And by Win-Win, I mean there's absolutely no downside or real harm in over-shooting our quota here. You get an immunity which is great, and if you don't get the disease? No real harm is really done anyway.
