One thing to remember is that this would not be something that comes out of nowhere. Iron Man was the first hero to face Thanos, and since then, was one of the ones Thanos consistently thinks of as someone who is a threat throughout his early run. Iron Man gets a couple of good shots in in a couple of stories, including taking out Thanos' fake Soul Gem in the story of the first time Thanos obtained the gems.
