Originally, Flashpoint was supposed to do what Convergence is doing now, becoming a holding place, a band aid, for books during the originally planned move of DC Comics from New York to Burbank, which was then delayed until 2015. At the end of Flashpoint, the books were originally going to continue as normal without the reboot, and Multiversity was intended to be born from Final Crisis.
But obviously, things change. But they told the crowd that Convergence is the culmination of everything DC has had planned and on the table from the New York era.

Rebirth is a reclamation, not just of the DC Universe’s history, but of its heart and soul. It’s a repudiation, a first step towards casting out the darkness and cynicism that has infected the DC Universe for decades. It’s a return to form for one of the industry’s most prolific writers, and a recognition of all the things that DC Comics needs to change… and a reminder of all the things about DC we need to remember most. With its stirring characterization serving as the launchpad for a salvo of new comics, DC Rebirth Special is a love letter to DC’s past that will leave current and lapsed fans alike feeling optimistic about the future to come.

Zeroing in on the most likable qualities of these characters, Johns reminds us why our hearts break when a hero finds their long-lost love and is cast aside, why we cheer when a character is brought back from the edge of the abyss. Even on the basis of sheer execution, Johns’ script feels as precise as a Swiss timepiece. He bounces from hero to hero, from high concept to new high concept with a brisk pace, economically establishing all of his characters and structuring his overarching story by balancing heartfelt slice-of-life scenes with big, fist pump-inducing reveals that are sure to get commenters chatting. But in a comic full of big moments, there’s one that will stand out above the rest, and without revealing spoilers, it might be one of the smartest bits Johns has come up with since Sinestro Corps War — DC has had a bit of a villain problem since the New 52 began, but with Rebirth, Johns flips the script and turns everything on its ear. As I’ve said before, Rebirth works as a comic not just because it’s a master class in establishing a cohesive shared universe, but because it has a very clear point of view about what it’s trying to correct — namely, correcting the cynicism that has informed mainstream superhero comics for years.

And in keeping with that optimism, Johns has also surrounded himself with a team of some of the biggest and brightest artists in the DC lineup. One early frontrunner for MVP might be Ethan Van Sciver, who shows a surprising versatility in style here, shifting from his trademark shadowy style to something much cleaner, almost in the vein of George Perez in the span of a couple pages. (Honestly, at first glance, the resemblance was so uncanny I had thought Phil Jimenez had taken over a few pages.) But having Van Sciver and Jimenez in this book ultimately evokes that feeling of nostalgia, that sort of Crisis-level cachet that makes DC Rebirth feel like an event more than just a one-shot. Gary Frank, meanwhile, adds a level of consistency throughout the book, as he’s stretched across three chapters — through most of this book, Frank’s characters feel wide-eyed and innocent, unafraid to smile or tense up or emote, and it’s a great way to carry out Johns’ newer, more optimistic mission statement. It’s very telling when Ivan Reis — a clean, reliable meat-and-potatoes superhero artist if DC has ever seen one — winds up becoming the runt of the litter here. It’s not even a case of Reis being a good artist amongst greats — it’s about Reis being a great artist amongst a trio of classics.

REPOSTING IGN SPOILERS GET THE FUCK OUT NOWThe issue kicks off with the return of Wally West, the original pre-New 52 version, in his Kid Flash costume, although he remembers everything from his entire life and being the Flash. He’s been lost in the Speed Force and isn’t back to our plane of existence quite yet. He’s in search of a tether, someone who he can connect with that will bring him back fully.
He’s also aware that a darkness has infected the DC, going back from before Flashpoint. He guesses that someone stole 10 years from their lives, fundamentally changing everyone (aka the New 52).
He bounces around the DC Universe, checking in with everyone from Batman to the Atom. Here’s a few things he learns along the way.
During the events of the Darkseid War, Batman learned that there is not one Joker, but three.

The Atom aka Ray Palmer is trapped in the microverse, and he left a size-changing belt for Ryan Choi to come save him. Ryan Choi was once the Atom pre-New 52, and now their legacy has been established once again.
Speaking of legacy, we see Blue Beetle Ted Kord talk with new(er) Blue Beelte Jaime Reyes. After Jaime leaves, Doctor Fate appears to Ted. There has been a Doctor Fate in the New 52, but he’s on Earth 2, so this is the return of Doctor Fate proper.
Jessica Cruz is now a Green Lantern and we see Hal tell her about Sinestro.
Aqualad Jackson Hyde is back and now he’s gay.

Wally says it was someone else. Someone who removed the friendships, legacies, and relationships between the heroes of the DCU in order to weaken them.

Wally says there’s a war coming with this mysterious being, and back in the Batcave we watch as Batman starts to piece together some clues. Batman sees something shiny in a deep pit inside the Batcave, so he descends to chisel it out of the rock. He pulls out the yellow smiley-face button of the Comedian, complete with a splat of blood. Barry says, “I can feel it. Even now, Barry, we’re being watched.” The story ends.
The beginning of the issue started with a close-up on a watch, but never explained why. In the issue’s epilogue, our view goes from Earth, into space, and settles on Mars. It zooms in on that same watch as it is taken apart in the air, and as we see the clock face, it changes to yellow and black. There’s narration, pulled from the end of Watchmen, the final scene between Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias, Adrian Veidt:

The implication is that Dr. Manhattan is the one who caused the changes of the New 52 as some sort of attack or experiment on the DCU’s heroes, although his motives are still unknown. Before taking off at the end of Watchmen, he did say he might want to create some life of his own, and in Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #4, we saw him take a crack at it, so it's possible that Dr. Manhattan created the DC Universe.
