Blame white men every fourth panel.

sell your soul to the devil

also spend every waking moment you have practicing. You should be drawing for 12 hours a day.

Be really fucking good, pander, or go back to 2003 and do literally anything

Can I draw 13 years worth of back comics and pretend like I've been doing it since 2003?

Be dedicated to making comics. Even if it's a cheap way like B^U, actually make sure you go through with it rather than just making a couple of issues and dumping it.
While making your comic, always try to improve, not just for your intended readers, but for yourself. If you're making a comic you either have a story to tell or you just love making art, so it hurts no one if you continually get better at one or both to a point where you're comfortable with how you're progressing.
Either have something that lets your readers donate, or have merchandise, though the latter only if people ask, or else it's just a waste of your own time. Sometimes readers actually want to give back to something that brings them enjoyment, but they don't have a way to.
Never give up. Not everything is going to be the next big thing, so don't needlessly or soullessly try to be. Create something you want to create, or create something that you feel should be created. If it doesn't instantly get big, don't worry, people will come if you keep at it and let yourself be known.

1) Always try to improve
2) ALWAYS. ALWAYS. ALWAYS UPDATE ON TIME WITHOUT FAIL COME HELL, HIGH WATER OR NUCLEAR WAR.

Update frequently and on schedule.
Helps if your art isn't shit either. For me at least, good art will make or break a comic, regardless of plot or other quality-indicators.

Sell t-shirts and mugs with your nickname on it.

>UPDATE ON TIME
I didn't know someone actually cares about schedules when you can just subscribe to RSS and read new shit when you get notification.

If you want to make money at comics updating on time is a must. Most of the time your audience will drift away if you stop doing it regularly. Back in the day I used to love vg cats until the guy started flaking.

for a quick easy buck
pander to the lowest common denominator

it you're serious
think up any idea that you find interesting and figure out a story for it and proceed to draw it and write it out. It won't be good at first but over time you'll improve, learning new techniques and styles. Also, take the criticism, that way you'll want to get better
Always update regularly and sometimes just post some doodes you made to get others interested in it too

Look at some of the comics that /co/ likes to talk/bitch about all the time. Unsounded, SSSS, Endtown, Poppy, CAD, Paranatural is a bad example but at one point he did update when he said he would update, and gag-a-day comics like XKCD/SMBC/C&H all have consistent, scheduled updates which can be hard to do when you derive most of your income exclusively from your comic. Being able to do so demonstrates that you've got your shit together enough to actually update your comic, and that you actually give enough of a fuck to do so.

You're about five years too late. The market's full, no vacancy. Like Let's Plays, but a bit older.

Update regularly and a lot. Quantity trumps quality.
Plus only other professionals will see the quality. Common man does not grasp any of the differences between the art of Calvin&Hobbes and the art of Dilbert for example.
Aim for then lowest common denominator.
If it's unique and new in some way then it just means that less people will understand it which cuts your reader base.

Make sure your comics are really crap but 'deal with' 'social issues'. Stick a donate button on your page and live the lazy cunt life until the SJW trend dies off in 4 or 5 years, at which point you might try suddenly making anti-SJW comics because it will be cool to make fun of them then.
