Between this and Ratchet and Clank, are video game movies just doomed?
>>
>video game movie fails
Must be nice to have been born after 2010 to think this is news.
>>
Hopefully.
>>
>>82933895
No, /v/irgins are born everyday.

Same for capefags
>>
>>82933895
You know Food Fight? The movie that was made and largely bankrolled start to finish by amateurs outside the studio system who wanted total creative control?

This is what you get when a movie like that is finished to release standard. A forgettable movie. Studios don't make so many movies to flood out the little guy with his great one-shot, they make that many because no matter how great they are, some movies just don't sell and you end up losing a lot of money if you don't spread your bets.
>>
>>82933895
Wait till Warcraft and Assassins Creed come out
>>
See, this I have no problem failing, because it's a movie based off an old as shit mobile game. Plus it's like 6 years late to the punch.

the stories of video games are just filler to advance the player from one area to another, so they dont translate well at all to the big screen

though its kinda funny that a game with absolutely no story at all still manages to produce a shit movie
>>
>>82933989
If you can't smell the putrid stink of critical and financial failure by watching the Warcraft trailers, I don't know what to tell you.
>>
>>82934057
>Plus it's like 6 years late to the punch.
This is what I'm wondering about. When I was in highschool, AB was everywhere, why is it coming out now?
>>
Screw you guys. Street Fighter is going to be an awesome movie, and Jean Claude van Dam is a total badass. And Raoul Julia as Bison? That guy's just a class act who will be making movies we'll all love for years to come.
>>
>>82934102
I'll watch it to support Davd Bowie's son.
>>

>>
>>82934171
I'm watching it because orc girls are my fetish.
>>
>>82934070
Sometimes. RPGs and adventure games do have a strong focus on story, but they have the opposite problem - the story is too extensive to adapt.
>>
>>82933895
Isn't Nintendo making animated featured films?

are they doomed?
>>
>we live in a world where Angry Birds got a fucking movie about 6/7 years too late
>and Minecraft got a story mode game, which will probably be made into a movie later
>>
>>82934378
I can only see it ending terribly unless NoA is in charge of it.
>>
>>82934378
Lightning will strike twice and they become Marvel 2.0
>>
>>82934347
RPGs also usually have the luxury of being told over the course of way more than 2 hours so even if your protag is kind of a jerk there's tons of time to develop him
>>
Dunno, this looks kinda funny. It'll probably fucking suck though.
>>
>>82934378
They were waiting to see how Angry Birds and Warcraft perform.
Whether its critically, or finacially, they might not bother at this point.
>>
>>82934378
Nintendo already has a very successful film franchise with one of their properties (Pokemon).

And it seems like, to kids, anything Mario, Sonic, or Pikachu do can do no wrong

>>82935109
I kind of liked Monster House. It was no masterpiece, or anything, but it's a nice flick to have on in the background while decorating the house for Halloween.

You do have a point about how all of the other movies that director had done is crap though. I mean that Poltergeist remake was utterly pointless.
>>
>>82935186
They're swatting it down probably because a lot of their favorite actors are wasting their talents on Angry Birds. The only VA who makes sense for this garbage is Josh Gad, who's essentially just playing bird Olaf.
>>
Video Game movies are a bad idea for one simple reason. Video games in many cases tell their stories through gameplay.

If you take away the gameplay, then you take away a major tool by which video games entertain. It's the equivalent of taking away sound and color for a modern movie. Taking away the gameplay cripples what makes a game special.
>>
Went to "see" it yesterday.
It had some funny parts.
>>
>>82933895
i still remember the first commercial i ever heard for the Mortal Kombat movie...

What do these movies all have in common?

THEY SUCKED

...and pretty much every video game movie since then has sucked, too.
Except for Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, that shit was TIGHT.

I'm sure he needs your support at this difficult time when he's just come into at a minimum, I'd say tens of millions of dollarydoos

I mean his grief for his father is literally so great that he'll never work again if this overblown turkey of a movie doesn't have your support, because between the depression of losing a parent, which as we all know nobody in the history of humanity has ever managed, and the lack of an income, he will surely starve to death

Prince of Persia is the best video game movie in that it is just mediocre.
>>
>>82933895

>>
>>82937292

>>

>>
>>82937958
It was an odd choice. That's the worst song on Yeezus. They could have used Jesus Walks. That's a more fitting Kanye song for this.
>>
Better for all this to happen in a short span of time than over the course of years.

It's inevitable that studios would think something like this would be the next "comic book movie" fad, but it's quite clear it's going to crash n' burn hard.

If you can make a good movie out of Legos you can make a movie with video games. Every video game movie has been shit because of the lazy scripts and the bad direction every time.
Fucking Max Payne was about one night of revenge and they turned into well, shit. They treated like it something tacky and mmature instead of a John Woo action movie.
Hitman he is a silent assassin the movie he is a action hero that is killing people and taking down choppers in broad daylight.

A lot of the humor does derive from knowing the games/bird&pig puns. But there's a lot of slapstick, sexual innuendo, the standard for animated movies. Animation wise, it's Sony, so its fluid and cartoony. Hard to compare it to anything else, but I will say, it's probably the 2nd best Sony Animated movie after Cloudy.
>>
>>82933895
If anything, it's more impressive that they CONTINUE to fail nowadays, when games are becoming closer to movies than ever.
The problem is always because you're meant to play a full length, 8+ experience minimum, and compacting that into just 2 hours is ridiculous. But every single fucking time the director fails to even emulate the games properly and just goes wild and does unconnected, inane bullshit to the point where you can't recognize the game anymore.
It's flat out stupid how books nor games can be easily emulated properly to film despite them very clearly laying out the groundwork for what has to be done in the original texts.

Hollywood is so fucked the next couple of years. The studios realize that the rights to most of the big two's super heroes are off limits so they're trying to key in on the next big thing, "Vidya". This coupled with the corresponding boom in CGI films and record numbers of Cape Films coming out Hollywood is just going to burn itself the fuck out.

Also fuck Sony, as if your movie division wasn't shitty enough now you're going to turn literally every first party Playstation IP into a fucking movie?
>>

How the fuck do you make movies out of any of these?

Also you forgot to add Shadow of the Colossus to TBA. I mean, it's not ever REALLY gonna come out, but neither are the majority of the movies on that list because most video game movies end up in production limbo.

It's not exactly much better on the purely 3D animation side either.

I saw Expelled from Eden in a theater, to my regret, and there was a pre-show bit from the director where he stated that it was on the cutting edge of CGI animation in Japan. As soon as the movie started, I thought
>if that's true, then Japan really needs to shape it's shit up
A few scenes, mostly the major action set pieces, could be alright, but their stylized 3D CGI is still a pretty big steaming pile.

I haven't seen the Captain Harlock movie, but that looked like it had pretty good animation.

I look at this list I find myself asking why are they making these movies?

I mean the reason why we have all these super hero movie is that the Avengers made so much profit. But what video game box office smash was there to all of Hollywood rush to get a video game movie out?

There's no point making most of these games into movies.

>Uncharted
That's just a poor-man's Indiana Jones.

>Sonic the Hedgehog
When was the last time Sonic had a game good enough to warrant a movie?

>Borderlands
By the time the movie comes out, all the memes they wrote into the script will be out of date.

>Call of Duty
Who plays CoD for the story line?

>Devil May Cry
The original or the reboot? Because no liked the reboot.

>Gran Turismo
That's just a racing car game.

>Raving Rabbits
Who even cares about Raving Rabbits nowadays?

>Asteroids, Rampage, Spy Hunter
Is someone trying to start a Atari Cinematic universe?

I could go on, but it just seems like Hollywood has failed to learn from history.
>>
>>82954300
I feel like people are forgetting movies end up not getting made all the time. Lists like this could be made going back to the dawn of cinema as an industry. I doubt if even a handful of the "TBA" list gets made and I bet some of the movies with "dates" end up getting pushed back and/or just canceled.

Hollywood is constantly throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks and stuff is constantly getting torpedoed. We can just hear about more of it nowadays.
>>
>>82954300
>I could go on, but it just seems like Hollywood has failed to learn from history.
Hey, one of those can possibly be new Iron Man and Dark Knight and kickstart video game movies.
Maybe.
>>
>>82954300
>>Call of Duty
>Who plays CoD for the story line?

>>Uncharted
>That's just a poor-man's Indiana Jones.

I think what you're missing here is that no ever gave a shit about the stories in any of these games, what people liked about them from the get go was the "Spectacle" of the set pieces, which is something that's actually pretty easy to translate into movie form

Where they're going to fail is that they're going to try and replicate the set piece heart of these games while also shoving in movie styled scenes and pacing, in addition to losing the video game quality of controlling a character through these scenes as well.

On top of all of that, movie spectacle is pretty par for the course nowadays, Uncharted 2's train scene is something every was impressed by when it came out, but Avengers 2 had an entire city lifted into the air before crashing to the ground in a blaze of special effects glory, and you don't exactly hear about it like it was some masterpiece of moviemaking

F3 Brotherhood are traitors to the cause. Bunch of savage-lovers.
