If you're curious, you might want to read Problem Sleuth first, it's a much shorter work similar in execution and it has a satisfying conclusion.

Yes, they can.
Snakes are cold-blooded and in general have very slow metabolisms compared to us humans. Some snakes use 99% less energy than we do if they were at equal weight and this is why snakes do not need to eat a whole lot. A fully grown Royal Python (~5-6 feet) for example can survive quite happily on 1kg of prey per year.
Unfortunately this means snakes, especially Boids like Boas/Pythons, are very susceptible to over-feeding as they are slow, sedentary and can't "burn off" all those extra calories they get from their food. This leads to the formation of fat and in snakes even a very small amount of fat can be very, very dangerous.
Of course this isn't universlly true for all snakes. Some Colubrids and Elapids for example can eat insane amounts (4-5x that of a much bigger Python) and be completely fine and this is because they are much more active. Watch a video of a King Cobra versus a Gaboon Viper, for example.
Fat snakes are a problem in the captive industry as many people over-feed a lot. However although less common it can occur in the wild also as snakes tend to be opportunistic feeders who will eat whatever crosses their path because they don't know when the next meal is coming!
There are plenty of overweight snakes and lizards and the only solution is to put them on a restricted-calorie diet.
