So if you don't think the epilogue or hiveswap are going to be good, why are you still here? Explain.

i didnt like the angsty unfunny conversations in a6a6i5 or the vriska mary sue joke but i liked the fun of collide, and the EXCELLENT music and good animation of the last two videos, and the 'happy' ending with dark implications. i also liked having to solve the lord english fight myself like a puzzle because puzzles are fun. its just a confluence of things only i enjoy. im not surprised everyone else hates it but i dont really care either

There is a small sliver of hope left in me. The epilogue will not fix the ending. It can't. But maybe it'll make it bearable.
Honestly though I'm mainly here to reminisce and share good memories and complaints with what's left of HSG.

I don't really know how to feel about it either.
If Andrew was sincere, the whole conversation was still stupid, insufferably meta, and later contradicted by the ending.
If Andrew was being ironic, it means he's always believed that solving your characters' problems with the wave of a magic wand was good storytelling.
Hard to tell which explanation is worse.
>>
>>82755310
There's a third possibility, that he left it ambigious so he could pick and choose when development was a good thing and when he was being le witty subverter
>>

>>
>>82755339
Yeah that seems like a thing he'd do. This reminds me that he has a lot of tricks up his sleeve to make the story's plot excuse the structural flaws.
Paradox Space dismissing unstable timelines and keeping the one that closes all its time loops has always struck me as an excellent excuse for "it happens because destiny said so" handwaving bullshit.
>>
>>82755310
in fairness to him homestuck has never really fitted any definition of 'good storytelling' since act1, since the intermission, since the trolls and since he started writing pages and pages of mostly irrelevant text under static images. you can begin to see why he might get carried away with the idea that his experiments are all genius when he seemed be totally right and the size of the audience looked like it proved it.

>>
>>82755453
I dunno, everything up to middle Act 6 was very traditional in terms of story structure.
Sure, the pacing was weird, and the format was innovative, but there was a formula that made it satisfying to read.
And it was something like: Introduce plot through narration, dialogue, subtle implications and sudden twists; fill said plot with myriads of tiny little details; eventually incorporate details into an aspect of the main plot not yet solved; solve it; repeat.
The experiments were fun, but they seriously weren't what was so good about Homestuck. Back then, Hussie said the story was also a puzzle, and he was right. Anything could be relevant, anything could happen. You just had to pay attention to the details.
I think that's what made the story so good, and you can clearly see that formula fall apart midway through Act 6, because so many questions are raised and very little is answered - until the mysteries pile up to form messy heaps and Andrew goes "fuck it" and sweeps them all under the rug, the end, thanks for playing.
I do think his hubris played a part. But his storytelling used to be -at least- decent.

reading serially from the start of act 1 until the troll arc, it never seemed like there was any kind of traditional plot. in retrospect it might seem that way. act 5 act 2 had a clear goal in mind that retroactively vindicated a lot of the weird and probably 'bad' decisions that he had made up until that point. the early acts establish a setting and then he just fucks around in the setting without much planned direction. it works because it's funny, and you like the characters, and in the process of setting up enough threads for his own future improvisations he gives you a chance to play with all the threads yourself and imagine huge stories of your own.

>>82755992
LOL look at this failure
>>
>>82756076
to be fair it's only one cherub that's really worth it

question hsg: how would you have made calliope better? i think having her fit more into a tragic role would have worked best.
>>
>>82756209
made her talk less or say more funny things. the sole issue to be fixed with all act 6 character problems was too much dialogue with not enough jokes. even the romance and angst could have been good if it was written funnier
>>
>>82756209
I can't think of anything to make Calliope better
>>
>>82756209

I think you need to redesign a lot of the comic to make the Cherubs work well.

I'd introduce them early. Have them act as either the equivalent of the trolls or the equivalent of the exiles. People like the trolls too much ultimately to toss them, so let's reduce the role of the exiles.

So, instead of WV giving commands to John, have Calliope give commands. Calliope could give commands to John and Jade while Caliborn gives commands to Rose and Dave. Have them be more involved. Have them develop more of a personality.

Calliope particularly needs work. She needs to way up the mischieviousness. She needs to get a ton more confidence. She needs to be a trickster. And I'd actually take down the homicidal autism of Caliborn. Have them play a game, a real game. With each one confident but working to beat one another.

And then it's a big event, a big reveal, that Caliborn goes so far as to kill Calliope. I think she'd be a lot more endearing as the gentle trickster. Take Nanna and mix in a bit more smilely optimism. Female John, basically, is what to hit at.

And then have Calliope and Caliborn again for the reset session. But this time it's the reality where Calliope dominates over Caliborn.

Readers question "is this the same ones as before but at a prior time? Is this more serious, somber, sad Calliope the one from the afterlife or is it a new reality? Does Calliope have to be serious in order to win? etc etc"
>>
>>82756340
>reduce the role of the exiles
no fuck you
>>
>>82756373

I love the exiles. I'd prefer to toss the trolls. But the trolls are too big a part of the story. The exiles can still be involved. But I think it's a good sacrifice to make to have their discussions with the kids instead be cherub discussions with the original 4. And to have these discussions be more frequent. Develop to the point of the kids actually having conversations instead of being yelled at.
>>
>>82754702
Ara's arm stretches get weirder and weirder.
>>
>>82756340
problem; part of the appeal with the cherubs was the massive twist regarding their reveal. i consider it one of the single best moments in the entire comic. how could we preserve this while introducing them earlier?
>>
>>82756340
So just replace the Exile's commands with Cherubs (and expand the commands to actual conversations)? Might have worked well.
>>
>>82756434
Lord English's appearance would have been the big reveal instead of the other way around.

A lot of this is personal, so take it with a grain of salt. Still:
1. Put more emphasis on her flaws. I find it hard to relate or care for characters without clear issues. Have her mess up, slip up, say stupid things, and be clearly awkward more often. (Nothing too cringe, though, or at least not more cringe than her writing smutfics about the Alpha kids. That's already top cringe.)

2. >>82756256 is right. Make her less of an exposition lady and more of a hilarious, loveable dork. Caliborn is funny! Why? Because he's ridiculous, overdramatic, and oddly clever in his insults and his plans. Take some inspiration from that.

3. Another thing that bothers me with Calliope is that she's involved in Homestuck's plot by existing, and only because of that. She's related to the big bad and prophecized to be a secret weapon against him and that's all. Otherwise she mostly stands around acting cute and being a goal for Roxy. She's a McGuffin made flesh, and that sucks.

Now that doesn't mean she needs to fight LE or gather up an army or do something important. She can stay on the sidelines. But her appearances need to be interesting, and for that I see two things that could be focused on:
a. The way she deals with her confidence issues after Caliborn's bullshit wears her down. She wants nothing but happiness, doesn't she? It should not be cast upon her like a blessing from the sky. It should drive her. She can't be the melancholic skull snake girl forever.
b. Her desire and attempts to interact with the heroes she loves so much. Seriously! She grows up being obsessed with them, but her conversations are almost exclusively with Roxy. I want to see her talk to Rose and Terezi, to Dave and Tavros, to Nannasprite. Roxy and Calliope's adorable interactions get boring after the eleventh time.
c. Her role as a muse. She's basically THE passive booster, right? So have her try to give some emotional support and make her kind words have some impact.

Things like that.

i agree with nearly all of his but i dont agree with the last one. not all characters can be seen interacting with everyone, there just isnt enough time in the comic. better to cut weak dialogue than pad. a conversation should only be in there if andrew thought of a hilarious or hugely plot-impactful thing for the characters to say.

The similarities are kind of superficial. They have broadly similar personalities, with the key difference that Undyne is a genuinely caring person who is just pretending to be a psycho bitch.

do you remember when homestuck felt like it respected your intelligence? it didnt have to spell shit out to you, itd flip between a bunch of different threads and events totally out of order and let you watch and rewatch flashes like descend and cascade with no explanation given until you worked out what the fuck even just happened. i felt like that died out during act 6 and he got way too obvious with moralising and explaining through tons of exposition cos he realised his thirteen year-old fanbase were genuinely too dumb to get it most of the time.

i got a little bit of the old feel back again from act 7 and i liked it. but i get why other people dont.

Puzzles are fine for the middle of a story but an ending should give a sense of closure. Hussie didn't even give us a "puzzle" with a clear solution. There are five wildly different interpretations of the ending and they are all valid. We didn't get a puzzle, we got a cop-out.
>>
>>82759645
I didn't say there are no similarities.
I said the similarities are superficial. It's not like Undyne is literally fish Vriska. She has similar clothes and kind of acts like a cunt sometimes, but unlike Vriska she isn't actually a cunt, she doesn't treat her friends like garbage, and she doesn't have borderline personality disorder.
>>
>>82759647
There's a massive difference between
"things aren't spelled out, but it's easy to put the pieces together if you think for a moment"
and

>>
>>82759703

Snore. Those puzzles are for babies. Hussie made way better puzzles than that back in his heyday with Problem Sleuth.
I have picked apart his flashes and seen through all the smoke and mirrors of his riddles. I have gotten to the truth he is guarding. The great big mystery behind Homestuck. And you know what it is?
It's bullshit! Meaningless, boring, fanciful bullshit wrapped in tedious dialoglogs to keep you guessing. Real authors cut to the chase. They power through all the nonsense and go for the gold.
>>
Not only is it impossible to prove that the ending is unambiguous, I can prove that it is ambiguous. In Act 6 Act 6 Intermission 5, we are given two contradictory clues.

1. Vriska hints that the "four heroes" will emerge from the Juju and defeat English.
2. Dave suggests that defeating Union Jack will fulfill the prophecy that he will defeat Lord English.

It is not possible for both of these clues to be true. They are contradictory, so one of them must be red herring. It's not possible to know which one, QED the ending is ambiguous.

I think 2 was simply Dave thinking he can "trick" reality into letting his predicted hero role go as long as he kills off some guy who looks like English.
There are other contradictory clues about the ending (for example, the role of the green sun's destruction, of the black hole, of the house juju and of juju!dave's caledflwch; we don't know which one depowered and/or defeated LE in the end). But this isn't one.

Lord English was a really weird choice for a final boss. The comic always had many antagonists but they had different weight to them. Jack murdered johns parents as well as alot of other people we care about on screen, this clearly gets the auidence mad at him. condescension also set up this really bad dystopia thing that we get to see partially first hand. Lord English kills whole universes worth of people, which clearly sets him up as the bad guy but since we dont actually see it happen and the people are people we don't know the auidence doesn't feel alot of hatred towards him. Then after cascade we get introduced to the cherub kids, which at first seems like it might fix it. Maybe hussie shows us caliborn fucking with the alpha kids and trying to get them killed, which would be a good way to get the audience to hate him as much as they do the other antagonists. But then he doesn't. The worst thing we really see him doing is calling them names over the internet. Not only is this no where near as bad as the other antagonists, but it can almost be endearing. He comes off as the twelve year old kid who thinks he's hot shit and makes up dumb insults at anyone who they dont like. The worst thing he does is kill calliope, which COULD have made the audience start to hate him, but then its kind of undone when we learn that happens to every cherub, so actually thats totally normal. By the end the story is apathetic towards him at best and almost like a comic relief character at worst.
>>
>>82760440
>I think 2 was simply Dave thinking he can "trick" reality into letting his predicted hero role go as long as he kills off some guy who looks like English.
I disagree, or rather, I'm not comfortable dismissing it as evidence just because of that. Many of the clues we have are not characters saying what will happen, but rather, offering up their own interpretations of what might happen. #1 is Vriska's interpretation of how events will play out and #2 is Dave's. They happen to contradict each other. Neither character actually knows what they're talking about. They're just saying things with the narrative purpose of providing foreshadowing to the reader.
>>
>>82760512
Dave says that defeating Union Jack might fulfill the prophecy, so he won't need to go fight Lord English. But if he goes and fights Lord English anyway, then that line is a red herring.

What is that red light? Is that what kills English? Does it knock him into the black hole? Or is it coming to drag him into the Juju?

Why does it zoom in on the door? Is this shot from English's perspective? What is tearing up the ground here? The light? The black hole? English himself?

I doubt that these ambiguities are part of a puzzle. I think that the events of this animation were just poorly conveyed.

very detailed but shitty. a high framerate doesn't make good animation automatically, it's like Ping Pong except clearly not done out of an artistic choice but out of lack of ability

and lets not forget the fact that the only scenes that could legally be defined as animation are a few seconds of caliborn and the genesis frog. the rest are LITERALLY zooming away from still frames

>you say that as if homestuck's animation isn't panning over still frames and sprites with one or two frames of animation

That was the style of Homestuck, a style Hussie refined for years, even before Homestuck itself, and was aided by actual good artwork to be panned over rather than the puke in Act 7

Hell, some of the sprite animation is more fluid than the Caliborn bits in Act 7. Go back and rewatch John's fight against the Ogres
