Well I wouldn't be too quick to declare it out of character, do remember John's got a rather shallow character as a whole given he's the main protagonist we experience the story through. I think it's a reflection of his lack of emotional maturity, most of the time he's happy go lucky but when something gets in the way of that and being assertive doesn't fix it he just flips his lid and overreacts.
