I think he wanted to be subversive by not fulfilling expectations or a formula that all the kids meeting their denizen.
Instead of being clever and just have them meet them all in unusual ways, and not just as a plot backup device like with John learning how to control his retcon powers.

Turns out Hussie is pretty bad at actually delivering on anything interesting after your expectations are subverted. Maybe if he didn't waste so much time with spider, clown, and teen romance.
