I think there is a major difference in the way fans across the community think of characters in stories.
Some readers think of them as people, and others think of them as characters in the "literary concepts" sense.
"Character-people" fans care more about their favorites being happy and safe, even if they don't learn, whereas "character-concept" fans care more about said faves growing, improving, and generally fulfilling an arc in the story, even if they don't find happiness by the end.
So, two paths to two very different senses of satisfaction.
You see what I'm getting to: I think people on HSG are overwhelmingly character-concept type readers, whereas on tumblr and reddit character-person fans are the majority, or at least more vocal (hence why "everyone on the new universe seems happy, so the ending didn't bother me that much" is a popular sentiment on tumblr).
And what was Davepeta in the end? The sprite fusion was a magical ticket to happiness for both Dave and Nepeta, even though they learned absolutely nothing. Dave found a sense of internal peace. Nepeta found... a sort of drive to find her place.
They just happened to complete each other's personalities like that, and benefit from the weird-ass transcendental insight granted to sprites-squared by SBURB.
So, tl;dr magic fixed their problems and made them happy, which is a perfectly fine resolution for them as people, and a spectacularly shitty resolution for them as characters in a story.
Personally, the loss of identity that comes from characters being fused together squicks me out a little, so it's also one of the reasons I dislike Davepeta. Homestuck has a lot of horrifying implications that float to the surface when you think about anything for more than two minutes, and this is one of them. Or maybe it's just me.

Hm. I think the thing about the whole 'literary concepts' thing is that if you're not careful it can end up being kind of arbitrary.
Like, I thought this character would have a certain arc, but they didn't, so they're shit. Not that that's necessarily wrong, but it's really dependent on an argument.
If you say, 'I think Kanaya is cool, so I'm happy that she ended up happy,' that's kind of an objective point. It's a clear, logical reason to hold an opinion. The moment you start trying to bring up character arcs, and importance to the story, than you'd better hope you know what you're talking about or you'll come across as kind of a moron.
And of course, there's nothing saying that you can't enjoy seeing a character happy while also wishing they had a better part in the story.

Isn't the only thing we know about Blood is its ties to vitality and leadership? I can't remember where it was brought up, or by whom but the phrase stands out in my mind. If so then Karkat can be praised for his work in his session, given that the trolls didn't even play the game properly, but were corralled into usefulness by Karkat enough to wineven if it's likely due in part to Aradia and Vriska's individual contributions.
That's a solid example of Karkat successfully weaponizing through the process of leadership, which should be in-keeping with his status as the Knight of Blood. The problems obviously come later when he has no influence on anything and willingly gives up his position of leader to fucking Vriska of all people, whilst saying he's okay with that situation then being passive aggressive about it. That's some grade A shit right there.

They bruteforced the game, which was likely the intent of the alterations Doc Scratch made to Alternia. So they had the skills to assure they'd win, but not in the way that the game itself intended. Except it turned in on itself and went backwards, that's likely to annoy anyone who actually cares about the characters motivations, emotions and additions to the story.
A lot of characters suffered a similar fate with stagnation of development, even if they end up happy, which is obviously something fans would hope for their characters of choice, it doesn't make up for their lack of relevance to the story or the loss of their character arcs meaning. That last sentiment relative to the character in question of course.

In retrospect it's kind of weird that HSG likes (liked?) Karkat more than Tavros.
Despite being a massive nerdweenie, Tavros shows frequent hints of improvement and eventually accomplishes something cool.
He's got the qualities that (possibly) made Mituna popular, too. That is, he's a foul-mouthed, unapologetic dork who's "broken" in a way, suffers from some asshole's horrible abuse, and also has a good heart and a strong sense of right despite how much of a joke he might seem to be at first glance.
(I kind of want Mituna and Tavros to talk now. That would be hilarious, can you imagine?)

It takes him way longer to get to the point where he shows progression with his issues. Whereas Karkat was someone with clear goals and challenges from the get go, and it seems like he was moving towards those goals given how he was clearly respected as a successful leader on the meteor after his efforts in the troll session. His character development stalls a bit and is nearly obliterated by the retcon. He never really deals with her personal challenges either which is a real turn off as well.
Tavros on the other hand starts off a weenie, but one you wish the best for, problem is he never really makes much of a dent in facing his challenges as Vriska is just too invested in him. I understand why he struggled so much, but that doesn't absolve the distaste it brings seeing him act as a doormat for so long. Eventually however, he comes into his own and starts to realise he can make his own choices. Then his development is great to see, it's a highlight of Act 6 for me.

I see where you're coming from, and yes I agree Vriska is the primary reason for Tavros not challenging his issues or reaching for his goals. She's toxic and drags him down despite thinking she's actually toughening him up.
My point is that in terms of endearment, making the reader care about the character, Karkat does a better job of it early on as we're shown the struggles he faces, his own and those forced upon him, and how he willingly reaches for his goals despite the troubles. Tavros doesn't do that, we know what he wants to do and it's pretty damn obvious what challenges he faces, but because of the presence of Vriska and his own meekness he doesn't show enough willingness to obtain what he wants. Understandably people connect more with Karkat due to his impetus to face his challenges, the issues start when his impetus to meet said challenges stalls and then regresses.

It was meant to hint at Terezi's destructive tendencies to emotional dependence.
She thought the guys in her life were the problem all along and she never considered that Vriska would exploit her and chip away at her self-esteem.
Because that's what Vriska does. No one is off-limits to her, and she naturally sees relationships as resources she can exploit for personal gain.
Terezi never figured it out. That's what it means. She trusted Vriska and she paid the price everyone pays for doing that.

Boggles my mind, too. I think it's hard for people to factor the consequences of abuse into a character's personality, especially when said character is a guy and guys are expected to not be victims.
So the only explanation people come up with is "oh, Tavros was a weenie from the start" (like >>82673216) even though that's kinda wrong. Tavros would make a perfectly well-adjusted, nerdy thirteen year old (and he would seem that way if he wasn't surrounded by supernaturally competent psychos).
A lot of readers think of Tavros as an already "broken" whose brokenness caught Vriska's attention and caused him to let her walk all over him. That's the easy, low-effort perspective, and it's a form of victim blaming.
We we should think of him as a regular kid who was worn down by an exceptionally nasty bully who was relentless, obsessed with him, and completely in control, until it became clear that he'd only survive by letting her do what she wants. That's how abuse works. Acting like a weenie is a defense mechanism you develop to survive in those situations.
Tavros was exceptionally resilient. He humiliated himself with every attempt to stand up, but he never stopped trying. And then he succeeded. Or at least (Tavros) did.
And in my mind that's more difficult and admirable than killing off some generic bad guys. Not to mention way, way more relatable. That's a kind of everyday-badass role model we need.

I'm not sure. I can't tell how it was intended to be taken, ideally it was Tavros making the decision on his own to give it to Meenah in a way that he knew would work for her. So, he flatters her and makes her seem like the most important person in the bubble which ensures she'll take the army off his hands, whilst also pissing of Vriska who likely thinks she should be the most important person in any situation. It makes sense to me, given that the rounding up of the ghost army was Tavros talking and convincing them to help, not everyone is going to be won over by being nice, so it stands to reason he had to be a bit sneaky with some of those people, like Eridan, Equius and the dancestors.
On the other hand it could just simply be he was happy to hold that position and preferred Meenah being willingly in command then forcefully, sends off the wrong message and all that.

Exactly, those fans who liked Tavros were rewarded in the end, and even those who may not have liked him early on likely appreciate his efforts to develop later in the story. I think the lack of focus is perhaps just satisfaction, there's nothing much to complain about as pre-retcon Tavros' eventual character arc is solid, so people stay quietly content.
Even just him facing up to Vriska is a good end for him, especially if he'd been more of a supporting cast troll. But it seemed the intent with him was as more of a main character troll with Karkat and Terezi so it wouldn't have be an ideal end in my mind.

Out of all those things she steals, this is the one which burns me the most. The fact that Vriska just dictates the threats and battle plans with no real input or discussion from anyone still leaves a bitter taste. There's no reason not to have discussion from the available characters there, it shows how they're invested in what is set to be the big final fights of the series. They could have had Roxy, Karkat and Kanaya talking about the Condesce and showing why they want to be involved in taking her down. It makes you care about the fight as you care for the characters beyond just their wellbeing, you care for their motivations and emotions surrounding it.
There's so many things they could have used that time for, instead Vriska just outlines what's going to happen and it just happens that way, albeit with some fantastic music and interesting sprite strifes.

Why do you people act like it's in any way surprising that undertale has a bigger fanbase than homestuck. Homestuck is 80000 pages long with a slow start, walls of text, and a confusing storyline full of time travel and paradoxes. Undertale is a game you can buy on steam for $10 and beat in 5 hours. Of course massively more people have youtubed megalovania than have reached the end of homestuck.
