Honestly, when I read shit like this the whole situation with Hiveswap boggles my mind. He HAD to know that making games is no laughing matter and that even if he wasnt woking on stuff himself, managing a team of people to make it for him would still be a huge time sink, especially if he was planning on doing all the writing himself.

Well if Homestuck 2.0 is really trying to be sold to the mainstream media, you don't want a bunch of easily googleable dirt on you sitting around, or a reputation as a snarky jackass who tells his fans where to shove it. So I think he strategically scrubbed himself out of the public eye to assist Dante's purposes. But it will work in his own favour too for if everything goes tits up or he just gets bored, he can maintain the silence and easily never come back. I mean it's clear that the majority of the work on Hiveswap is being done without him, as long as the KS/merch money keeps feeding it he doesn't have to interact with his own brand in any form at this point. How/where is anyone going to harass him to give us the epilogue? The majority of the fanbase already moved on, the 4ums got nuked from orbit, what's left of us is fragmented and disincentivised to care. MSPA can fade away into the vaccuum of the internet along with such classics as Applegeeks and Mac Hall.

I think Jane could have had some meaningful development in the wake of her whole 'mind-controlled' self and reconciliation with the Alphas that never happened. That being, whilst it's good to be someone that people depend on and feel comfortable sharing problems with, you can't overshadow your own desires at the expense of their feelings for extended periods of time or it leads to resentment. Some measure of selfishness is necessary for healthy living for most people; that doesn't mean you have to be less of a cheerful, positive person. I would argue that you can see this eventual revelation with Nanna Crocker given she was a notorious prankster, which is something she found joy in at the expense of others, yet she was still regarded fondly.
The problem is, there was never any time to meaningfully show the Alphas coming together again and reflecting on what they'd learnt. Dirk got his time with Dave which was really solid closure for the both of them, Roxy had already sorted her shit out by then, but Jake and Jane were just left untouched.

I think even John know there was no coming back from that for Dirk, the guy just sounded so fucking defeated and I can't blame him given the circumstances. So, with Homestuck having ended I decided to go through it to see what all the fuss was about. I'm near the end of act 4 and so far, I am completely blown away.
My only complaint so far is that the parts where the trolls and everyone are messaging each other go on for a bit too long (I love time travel/time paradox shit so it isn't THAT bad for me)
I had heard about a huge dip in quality happening near the end tho, should I brace myself for disappointment?

You can see the obvious similaritieis with aspects of human relations, red flushed feelings obviously with romantic partners, pale with best friends and the like. But the quadrants have a grater practical purpose for the trolls, relative to the quadrant and troll. In addition romance does seem to play a part in each quadrant, the motivations behind them changing primarily between them.
Either way, Karkat was pretty poor with the whole romance side of things so I don't think his biased views on things are too solid a reference for John's capabilities of emotional expression. He'd probably still fuck Terezi though, who wouldn't?

Like a lot of the characters in Homestuck, they don't work well in relationships due to some major personality flaw they have which needs confronting. In this case, Karkat never really confronts his crippling self hatred and self doubt stemming from his status as a mutant. For him to work with anyone he'd first have to deal with that, ideally this should have been shown in the actual fucking comic but hey who has time for character development of a main character.
But, if we're thinking about who could help him with these issues in some form of relationship be it red or pale, the obvious examples are positive minded people that like him despite his constant abrasive comments; such as Kanaya, Nepeta, John, Jade, Dave and likely others I'm forgetting.
Once he meaningfully moves past these crippling issues he'd work with a lot more people, as it's hard to love other people if you don't love yourself. It'd open the way for all manner of characters who like him to be romantic with each other, most notably Terezi who wouldn't work with him until he moved past said issue. Honestly, take your pick of who could have good chemistry with the guy, there's a lot of examples to choose from.

I'd stick to 4 kids, the original 4 trolls (at MOST replace one of them with another, like Tavros -> Vriska, maybe, but only ever in pesterlogs), and the 4 r-kids. Act 5 starts right away with the r-kids. All the other trolls die offscreen to a Bec Noir attack. English is/was always a Jack Noir in some huge nightmare loop the kids and trolls are both starting and ending.
Comic is wrapped by end of Act 5, with the scenes always rotating only between kids, trolls pestering them (they don't meet until the very very end), the carapaces, and communicating with the r-kids, where the roles are reversed and the original 4 kids pester them the same way like the trolls did them.
That'd be the basic idea, ignoring a dozen little details.
