Irredeemable is Mark Waid's story about the Plutonian, a Superman that has completely flipped his shit.

As a kid, the Plutonian didn't know his own strength and accidentally gave his foster brother brain damage. His other siblings then spent the next thirty years taking care of the guy in complete silence, out of fear that the Plutonian would hear them speak and then track them down. After he goes bad, he shows up at their house, eats dinner, and incinerates them.

How/why did he flip out? Was it an actual well-thought-out psychotic break from, for example, the stress and crushing expectations that would come from being a savior to a whole planet, while dealing with the psychological issues of being a stranger to them?

Or was it edgy handwaved bullshit because "Superman but bad" is like page number two in the Hacks Handbook of Comic Plots?
