Superman is Superman BECAUSE he's Clark Kent. It's a fundamental part of his character and why he's such an inspiring figure to others.

Clark was raised with the belief that if it's within his power to help, he should. It's who he is, his morals and his motivations is what drives him. Superman is the manifestation of these morals.
So when I say the person makes the hero, I don't mean where they were born, I mean who they are as a person.
The costume and the powers isn't what makes them a hero, it's their character.
