ITT: Americans pretending they know or care about Don Rosa for online comic cred.

I thought we weren't allowed to like Don Rosa anymore because of autism or whatever...

Fantagraphics is putting out new editions of Rosa and Barks. So that material is available again for the first time in awhile and at a very high quality.

>>
>>82405648

trying too hard
>>
>>82405677
I sincerely mean it

shit like the amount of research he put into his work is impressive, but in terms of storytelling/homage it just reads like fan fiction
>>
>>82405703
It's more of an excuse to lure in readers by exploring familiar ground and doing his own thing with it.

That is literally why anyone would ever make a DUCK comic in the first place.
>>
>>82405784
not even gonna argue with that.

i'm just not at all a fan of his writing and so thought i'd throw my own opinion into the 10,000th rosa circlejerk
>>
>>82405821

I respect your opinion even if I don't personally share it.

What is your favorite barks story?

>>
>>82406138
Oh, I don't. I love Rosa. I prefer him to Barks, generally.
>>
>>82405703
>but in terms of storytelling/homage it just reads like fan fiction
Whenever I read his stuff, it just seems better structured than Barks'. It's probably because it's a product of a different time, with different storytelling standards, but Rosa stories almost always end with a clever twist or solution that is usually based in scientific or historical fact. Barks' stories usually end with something he pulled out of his ass because he knew he was just writing comics for kids. Nothing wrong with that, his stories are still solid and satisfying, but Barks went that extra mile. Who cares if he was basically writing fanfics? That's pretty much what most writers do in the world of comics, nowadays.

>>82405886
Not him, but as someone who prefers Rosa, my favorite Barks story is "Only a Poor, Old Man...". Holy shit, every page just gets crazier and more absurd, but the stakes still feel high. It's a perfect example of a controlled burn into absolute madness. I think I liked it as a kid because it was the kind of story that most straightforwardly reminded me of a DuckTales episode.

Lost in the Andes is one of his most acclaimed works, and I only read it for the first time a few years ago, and I was let down after all the hype. Once again, it was a solid, straightforward story, but... eh. Like I said before, it's just that a lot of Bark's stuff came from a time where a solid, straightforward story in a comic book was a pretty hard thing to come by.
>>
>>82411629

That ok as long as you give Barks the due respect for creating the story framework Rosa used.
>>
>>82411804
Barks best aspect was his cartooning and use of allegories. All of his stories actually have messages despite seeming simple and his storytelling techniques are still utilized today because he was far ahead of the curve regarding how to use the comic page properly.

Literally how? He spends every morning swimming under thousands of tons of gold. He's fucking immune.
>>
>>82412997
I mean when he dies. Instead of paying for a plot in a graveyard, he'd probably just rather be buried in the center of his own money bin.

Probably never, since they can hardly get into the ones written by Americans.

That said, IDW has started publishing translated European Disney comics. Not sure how well they're being received, but there's no shortage of them. I think there are like, 4 different ongoings right now.

I honestly like the midevil feeling the comic had before it delved into cheap parodies and a groucho marx knock off.

I've only come across the first volume of cerebus, ended around the swamp thing parody.

Did it just get worse after the first volume?

It gets better after the first volume.

Like, astronomically better. You can see the issue where the writing and art just takes off.
>>
>>82413779
I dunno. I finally tracked down Sam and Max's comics after enjoying the Telltale games and just... It was honestly kind of a letdown. A bunch of loosely-strung together 'lolrandom' happenings that seemed like a tamer, better drawn version of a Jhonen Vasquez comic.

Like Animaniacs with less charm and more guns.
