It just seems bizarre to me that, out of all DC superheroes, the one character that MOST needs an updated costume is stuck with one that's nearly identical to his 1941 version.
The 90s version, IMO, tried WAY too hard to look cool and ended up feeling too "edgy, ugly 90s" as a result.

God that looks fucking stupid, and a few Old Fags I know of actually think this is better than his New 52 look. It's literally his old costume except they replaced the scales with rocks and removed the collar which actually suited him.
I think he could if they stopped trying to go with the raised texture pattern.
Aquaman is arguably the most well known amphibious superhero and yet they're dead set against giving him anything that looks like a wetsuit for some reason.
There are a couple other tweaks that might be worthwhile. I may try drawing them out.

He was cool enough in the DCAU stuff when he was basically colossal douche man who was effectively Namor.
I suppose the best Aquaman was the BatB version who was the show's single best character but DC would NEVER make him a character in their new edgy movies. They don't seem to want each character to have their own feel and 'universe' when in movies. They could easily have done the story from the recent DC animation but make Arthur more bombastic instead of a dick and cut out the JLA so he has Mira instead.
People also make him look like he's rocky instead of scales. The suit is meant to be like fish scales, not like fucking pebbles. Think Caps armour pre Marvel movies where it got made into kevlar.

Okay, here's more or less what I'd do.
Instead of the scale or pebble pattern, use some REALLY subtle webbing or hexagonal even just crosshatching in order to make the top look like a wetsuit. Only do it on the flexible parts or what have you so that it doesn't look to busy.
High collar is a must because Arthur is a king and high collars look more regal.
Instead o the fin gloves and boots, gold greaves and gauntlets. Then when shit gets real you can add additional Atlantean pauldrons and a helmet, like in Throne of Atlantis.
Darken the green parts of the costume so that they're near black, only green where the light hits it. The Rebirth Superman design does something similar to this.
Five o clock shadow if not a full beard. Facial hair is must for that high seas adventure feel.
He had a cool appearance recently in DK III: The Master Race.

Written thoughts on how I'd redesign Aquaman:
* You know why normal people honestly don't like Aquaman? His design is too basic. He looks like a goddamn grunt.
* Speaking of which, one thing that gets overlooked by normal people and also isn't inherent in his design is his royalty. People talk about the scales, the gold lining on his cuffs, etc. But you're looking at it from the perspective of someone in the know. From the outside, he doesn't look like the King of the Seas.
Give him a crown of some kind. At least a helmet. Perhaps a cape, too.
* Another aspect to the whole "grunt" feeling is, when you really get down to it, he should have a chest emblem. I don't know what it should be, and perhaps it could "blend in" to the costume like Wonder Woman's emblem blends in to hers.
* Furthering the above idea, probably the biggest thing *wrong* about Aquaman is that he's really just Arthur Curry, not "Aquaman", so to speak. At least in the DC Universe, that's something of a no-no: most of the big name characters could easily have other people wear their costumes, use their powers, and be called their superhero names, regardless of skin color, gender, hair color, facial features, etc. I suppose it goes towards the idea of putting yourself into the character's position.
Nothing wrong with him being blonde-haired, blue-eyed. But combine that with a basic design, it's the only thing that really makes him stand out.

Aquaman has the unfortunate history of a very bad cartoon, that became a popular joke, that defined his character in the eyes of many.
Fucker can go toe to toe with Wonder Woman, is the rules of an empire, could command an army of sharks and command any other fantasy seas creatures the writer wants to throw in.
He has fuckloads of potential, but the past of the character might hold him back forever.

It drives me crazy, especially in the Nu52 run where everyone treats it like its so fucking amazing. All the other artifacts his GRIMDARK friends use have special, and pretty damn amazing abilities. Even if a few of them are just upgrades of his natural ones, like the girl that can control big cats(I forget if its leopards or jaguars), but its awesome that its basically an upgrade that lets someone control mammals like he controls fish.
Then you have Orm with his Trident that controls Lightning, while his helmet controls water, effectively turning him into Poseidon!
And finally the ancient kings sceptor that can flash freeze people, and double as another Teep upgrade, but for the fucking abominations in the trench.
But what does the Trident do? Everyone seems to want it for some reason, but we never see him do anything with it, just stab some people, and smack others...
Oh and a personal pet peeve, it really irks me how lately artist keep drawing it with five tines. I think the pebble armor on OPs image is shit, but I'd take it just to get an actual fucking trident!

And Spider-Man isn't meant to be scary, but being named after something that is dangerous adds weight to a superhero's name. Black Lightning and Firestorm, for example. They aren't popular or particularly cool characters, but their names alone make them sound like forces to be reckoned with. Aquaman needs:
Recognizable chest logo (maybe a comibination A and trident. HIRE SPECIALIST LOGO DESIGNERS (MULTIPLE).
Recognizable symbol of kingly-ness- crown , trident, sword, medival armour, whatever so long as its CONSISTANT.
Matching Gauntlets/Gloves/Wristbands AND boots to break up solid colour of legs and chest.
Main power set that SOUNDS cool to the average child AND adult. I would recommend more of a focus on aquakinesis and controlling an entire army/kingdom of superpowered sea wizards. IE the atlantean army shows up even in cartoons and movies. A large part of superhero popularity is being an easily imaginable and understandable power fantasy.

Aquaman's logo is already the Atlantean crest, that A he uses on his belt.
The symbol of his rule is his trident. I do agree that there should be at least some manner of consistency on that.
His disadvantage over the likes of Superman, who has solid colors from top to bottom, is that his don't match as well as red and blue. Breaking the solid colors all over, instead of just gloves and boots, could help it be a little less glaring for Aquaman.
You know what is a simple way to make Aquaman a constant, terrifying threat? Give him permanent access (as in, make it a part of his normal arsenal) to the Dead King's Scepter from Throne of Atlantis. What says "horrors of the sea" more than control over an endless army of super strong, flesh eating bioluminescent monstrosities from the deepest trench in the world? That and have him show off more.
Shoot him to show that his skin is hard enough to just shrug it off. Have him jump a hundred feet. Have him flip over a security car with minimal effort. Have him tackle known powerhouses like WW. All of this happened in his New 52 run.

It's a hard balence to get right but I think new 52 auctualy did a good job of it especialy with the enjoying himself with his old schoolmates.
I do agree the first issue could have shown a bit of his more fun side but it did do a very good job on his serious aspects and I feel if you tried to add in the more light-hearted stuff you would not have enough room to do the serious bits right.
