>Qwark, too, is a knockoff, or at least strongly reminiscent of “Futurama”’s Zapp Brannigan, right down to his declarative speaking voice and yen for venality and cowardice. Naturally he’s not in the same galaxy as good old Zap — barely a sketch of a joke of a character.

Not realizing Zapp Brannigan is a parody of Shatner (and to a lesser extent Captain Kirk)...Not instantlly making that connection undermines the whole point of your argument.

>>
>>82304978
Because when you have an aggregate that comes to a consensus based on binary pass/fail reviews (with no real consistency, a 3/5 review can be either a pass or a fail for no reason given), paints a completely incomplete picture. Movies that are competently made, but with absolutely no originality, insight, or intrigue can float to a high 90% on a tidal wave of mostly tepid reviews.

Do you think it's position is well earned? Do you think the RT trolling on this board has actually enriched critical discussion of movies?
>>

75% was the arbitrary number to say "I should go see this.
So if it's fresh, go see it.
Just one check that's all that's all that needed.

I had assumed it would be bad from the fact that the trailer put more emphasis on the celebrity voices and barely even acknowledge the two main characters.
>>
>>82305333
That is the idea. That's not what people use RT for at all, and RT itself goes to great lengths to obfuscate this.

RTs only use as a website is "Hey is this movie a complete dumpster fire?" and even then it's not always successful on that front since a lot of deeply flawed, yet challenging movies end up with similar ratings to a Kevin James movie. It's a shit system, and the fact that it's basically used as a nexus for nerd communities to arbitrate what a good movie is the most noxious shit imaginable.

Movies always come out on Thursday where I'm from, so I've had the chance to actually see it. And honestly I'm surprised its getting shat on so hard. Now the movie is by no means perfect, I'll get this out of the way. Some jokes fall flat, they could've done a better job establishing Ratchet and Clank as friends. But plenty of other jokes are pretty good, the movie is visually very appealing i think they handled outside of the problem i pointed out between Ratchet and Clank the general characterizations are pretty good, i especially liked Quark (well, except for one joke).

This.

Calling Wreck-It-Ralph a video game adaptation is like saying the same about Tron just because there is a version of Snake in it.

The closest anyone ever got to good video game movies are stuff like Pokémon which
1) Aren't that good
2) Are made for kids, and
3) Came out simultaneously with the games as a joint project, so they're only as much based on the game as 2001: A Space Odyssey is based on the book.

Can we please stop using RT as some definitive version of what's good or bad? Yeah, the movie will probably be shit but instead of going off some critics I couldn't give two shits about I'll go off what people I know IRL think or if I really really have to I'll gamble $15 if I'm genuinely excited based off the promotional shit (which I'm not in this case). The same people who use a RT score as some sort of psuedo-emperical evidence of quality are the same people to disregard it when they give the opposite opinion of theirs on another movie.

Again, not a masterpiece, but fuck you, I liked it.

Now to play the game.
>>
>>82305111
What >>82308018 said. RT scores don't represent the "average rating" of a movie. It represents the percentage of critics that gave a positive review.

A movie that gets all "it's decent" reviews will theoretically get a 100, while a movie that gets all "not good, but not terrible" will get a 0. The reviews aren't saying Star Wars is just as good as those other movies, it's saying that most critics viewed Star Wars positively just like how they viewed the movies on the bottom positively.

The main problem with every video game movie is that they try to adapt a plot that was already told in the game. Video games don't follow a three act structure and a lot of elements that connect cutscenes come from the gameplay and players choices so cramming what like 10 to 20 hours of gameplay/story in a 90 minute movie is already makes the film dead on arrival.
>>
I do wonder how the series will move on, the movie seems to be heading for a flop but the game has been received well both critically and commercially.
>>
>>82311891
>Warcraft is the only hope for video game movies now.

Honestly, the game was bad too. Too focused on the Quark/Ratchet relationship but without any of the plot elements, villains doing things with motivations explained in gameplay voiceovers, and being switched out at whim. The locales were right but attempts to fit in parts of the old games were too haphazardly attached around the movie storyline. It scraps the reason Clank and Ratchet trust each other outside of a few hours seperated cutscenes which probably meshed better in the movie but don't here because they're six planets apart.

It's a movie tie-in game, and while it's decidedly Ratchet and Clank gameplay, the problem is obvious cut corners, linearity in some places and lost oppurtunities in others. Gaspar and Pokitaru seem like good ideas on expanding planets, but others seem like just rehashes because they were in the old game. Gotta have the Blargian Snagglebeast, gotta have Skid McMarx, but make his uncle the mayor of Novalis for... reasons. Cutscenes were either movie quality shots or just Fallout 4 level dialogue videos.

It was too short and too trimmed down, but it just didn't have the fun and cohesive story the Future games had added or the real exploration it promised. It's a shame because Sony is known to be fickle with franchises, but it's really not worth the money.

I'm going to sound like a blowhard retard because I'm saying this on the comics board (I come here for cartoon nostalgia) but

Capeshit should be kept in comic books. It's really a cancer to the film industry and studios would rather sink money into it than give an independent filmmaker financing. It's insultingly lazy and safe.

i thought the game was fine. to me its slightly better than the first one, because if you play the first one, it has its promise but also alot of problems too. the new one has its own fair share of problems, but I had decent fun with it, and changes, for the most part, were fine. but fuck the hoverboard races.

i do have a problem that the story in the remake is pretty fractured. the original game's story wasnt anything special, but it flowed decent enough. the Remake is just composed of movie clip, cutscenes, Qwark's recounting, all while tryig to be straightforward and cohesive. and, it doesnt work, mostly because it wants you to watch the movie to fill in the pieces a bit. if they played more with the fact that Qwark is retelling the story, and got more outlandish and embracing the concept, the fragmentation mightve felt more intentional than just awkward to me. I hope someone gets what im trying to say

We probably won't have a sequel that could build from the first movies's shortcomings to fix it, and now the hope remains in the Warcraft movie (which doesn't look good) and the apparently-in-the-making Assasin's Creed (The game's plot is already stupid enough, the movie is gonna be worse)

there's not been a good videogame movie (or at least, a critically avclaimed) videogame movie in history. they've all failed for one fundamental reason.

that reason is they're not interactive. what makes Hitman work, for example, is how it gives you the option of how to kill your target and pretty much free reign from thereon in. Taking away all the choice turns even the most well-made adaptation of that into a ninety minute let's-play with no commentary. basically the same thing goes for all the other videogame movies.
>>
>>82316413
Video games that try to be like movies, however?
They tend to be successful, much to the chagrin of "hardcore" gamers.
This ranges from cutscene-heavy games like The Last of Us to literal interactive movies like Until Dawn.

Eh, who cares? The movies basically an ad for the game series at this point.

Presumably, Insomniac was paid a flat fee for this property kind of like what Marvel gets for FOX Marvels films or Authors get for adaptations, so regardless of it's performance they got their money. SONY has virtually nothing to do with the movie so it's success isn't important to their bottom line. And the movie has such a low full release that most people who hate it will forget about it and or not hold it against the games.
>>

I get bringing in A-listers to your animated movie for star power. Mulan had Eddie Murphy, Aladdin had Robin Williams and Moana will have Dwayne Johnson

But they replaced voice acting god Kevin Michael Richardson as the baddie Drek with a phoning it in Paul Giammatti. Why? Paul's a solid actor but he has no real star power. No parent is going to drag their kid to this to see Paul fucking Giammati. And there's no way Paul's asking price was cheaper than Kevin's so what the fuck?

And don't even get me started on Bella Thrones bullshit as Cora. The only new cast members who seemed to give a damn were Rosario Dawson as Elaris and Dean Redman as Brax. The returning cast are all solid too but that was expected.

>>

How's this for a late reply?
On femdom:
I was bullied a lot in elementary and middle school. I wasn't bullied in high school (thankfully), but the damage was done. Being one of like 5 white kids in a school on the wrong side of town (and being an autist to boot) will do that, I suppose. Before I was basically conditioned to be non-communicative and untrusting of others (before 3rd grade), I primarily played with the girls in my school. They were so much nicer than the boys, and so much more interesting to talk to. And our favorite game of all time was when we all played cops and robbers. They all policed around, and would attempt to put me in "jail" (a playset with a lot of bars). Then they'd brag about how smart and strong they were for catching me. Sometimes I'd even make a villainous escape.

Fast-forwarding over all that unpleasantness, and my absolute lack of experience talking to females, and you have a classic headcase. The pleasant memories of old, the fascination I've always had with chasing/capturing/escape, and the ~6 years of bullying I received during important formative years, resulting in a heady mixture of fetish of the highest order. Pretty much the only bits of it I can't stand are cock shaming, or anything related to genital torture. That stuff is no bueno.

I fail to see your argument Mr.Strawman. I'm talking about art translating into film. Games have plots and stories. Things that can be translated into film and yet nobody can get it right. How many times can you point the finger until you realize it's the games fault for it's plot-lines being so damn generic? in a medium all about interaction and gameplay it's not shameful to admit that most games lack in the story department.

Then again it's Hollywood's fault for picking games with generic or almost completely nonexistent plots to begin with. If Hollywood actually took a chance on a game with a supposedly "deep story" then maybe I would take it seriously.

Meh. Critics hated this too.

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

I thought it was good!

Not amazing, but there's WAY worse garbage coming out all the time.

As a Ratchet and Clank fan, I had a good time. Only problems I had were I wished it was a little funnier (still had funny parts, but yeah, not every joke is a bulls-eye) and the new Galactic Rangers were kind of pointless. Stallone's character too, didn't think he brought that much to it.

Kind of had a slow start, but I was getting more and more into it as it went. Really don't get the venomous hate it's been getting. Is it AMAZING? No, of course not, but I went in expecting a fun Ratchet and Clank adventure and that's what I got.

>>
I saw the movie last night. I'm not sure if this is a point that has been brought up yet, but one thing I found really weird is how they handled the few action scenes they had. In Metropolis (or rather "Aleero City") there was that big fight against all those warbots, and something I noticed is that every time a warbot was shot down, they just simply tipped over. This is a very noticeable problem when you remember that this is part of the Ratchet & Clank series, where ever since Going Commando has been known for it's fun and extravagant robot destruction physics. Unlike the games, you don't see robot limbs and gears go flying or their metal casings crack and dent, all this movie does for the most part is just show them fall over. And that's especially weird since they had the resources straight from the reboot game to do this, it couldn't possibly have been that hard to implementable into the movie.

>>82320635
It's the most retarded shit too because you could make much more meaningful or artsy shit by having the player actually act out the events or make choices or do anything that video games should do. It makes the impact that much more visceral compared to basically watching a movie with some boring duck and cover shit added in.
But most of these shitty games that try too hard are being made by AAA studios who have no idea how to go about that because large studios and companies are not built in the way to make anything actually artistic compared to some small dev team who's making a passion project out of their "office" and who can stylize their shit to actually reflect the content and themes instead of trying to get the best graphics on a shitty six-year-old piece of hardware/
>>
>>82328591
>instead of trying to get the best graphics on a shitty six-year-old piece of hardware/
It really is a shame that they're abandoning gameplay for graphics.
As much as people don't want to admit it Nintendo is the only one not doing that and even then they're taking some questionable routes.
>>
>>82328662
Yup especially when it's on hardware that is so far behind when it first comes out and sticks around for years. The only games I play anymore really are 3DS shit and indie PC games. Not trying to be a hipster but they come out even more frequently than AAA games nowadays and there tends to be a LOT more decent-to-good ones typically for a fraction of the price. It's honestly stupid to stick around on consoles nowadays. I'm not one of those fags who lie and say you can build a $350 PC with graphics or performance "even better" than PS4 but you can build one around that price and run a lot more games a lot cheaper with a lot better quality with only a minor performance dip in that price range and a major increase in performance if you're willing to spend a bit more.
>>
>>82328977
Remember the days when consoles actually had games to sway the consumers instead of being one big graphics, "first exclusive DLC" wank?
>>
Has anyone else noticed how low the budget for the movie is? $20 million. This movie could end up doing crap and still possibly make it's money back.
>>
>>82328662
Yea, you would think the hardware/software would be at that point where developers would be able to smooth out the rough edges graphic-wise while devoting more effort into game design, rather than trying to make everything photorealistic.

Video games are just possibly inherently unable to be adapted to the big screen for a number of reasons. That and they never have phenomenal talent behind the movies. It's only until pretty much just now with this movie and the upcoming Warcraft movie that studios have even cared to try to faithfully adapt the source material.

Devil May Cry, with the right balance of self awareness and seriousness, could absolutely work. Reboot Resident Evil and make it more of a throwback to 80s horror and action movies, and again focus on the perfect amount of camp and seriousness to get people invested. Two of those should find some inspiration from John Carpenter movies or, in DMC's case, something like 80s Stallone or Arnie
>>
>>82329948
I guess it's either back to the drawing board or studios just need to fuck off and quit trying to adapt video games.

Just make it slow and atmospheric as possible. More focused on atmosphere and telling the story through action than anything else, like a few spaghetti Westerns. Minimal dialogue.

You know, Kid Icarus could really work as a CGI movie as well.

I mean, I'm all for that. Problem is, capeshit is a literal money printer. It's one of the safest investments a big movie studio could make, as those things pack the theaters quickly.

Of course, I would prefer that big time distributors/studios would use the money gathered from those (nearly) guaranteed investments to fund more risky pictures (and I'm sure a lot of them do just that. Fox, for example, has the Searchlight brand, which has had a hand in the films of people like Terrence Malick, Wes Anderson, and Alexander Inarritu). However, those risky pictures are exactly that, and can live or fail depending on how marketable it is.

Only read the first book as well, but the complaints I heard were that they tried to cram the lore of three books worth into one movie. The plot definitely needed room to breathe. As well as a noteworthy aesthetic to make the whole thing stand out.

>Kick some asteroid
>realize that kind of humor is the shit I ate up in 6th grade and is why I loved the ratchet and clank games
>still find it funny, only for nostalgic reasons

Similar to psychonauts, but I'm not worried about psychonauts 2 being so bad I'm worried that I'm too old

Watching the legitimately autistic users of Something Awful flock to the defense of this movie, claiming it was a work of utter genius while the rest of the world looked at it and said, "Holy shit, this is GARBAGE," was an amazing time. So many actually triggered goons.

Silent Hill COULD have been fucking amazing. If they had just let Sean Bean actually be Harry Mason (buh... buh... buh... people won't believe a FATHER can love a child that much!) or just turned him into James and made it Silent Hill 2 instead, it could've been the best ever.

>Warcraft is the only hope for video game movies now.
It looks fucking awful though.

So then why are you saying people can't have certain opinions?

Can we please stop saying good movies are bad just because a lot of people like them?

It would probably be lower

>If games are "art" how come every video game movie ether sucks ass or is painfully mediocre?
Easy because art comes in many varieties, humor and writing can work on only a video game and a video game alone.
Rachet and Clank's humor on a movie is cliched and overused while it works for a video game since it's interactive.

It was an ok movie, and I never even played on of the games.
