They aren't bad motivations, but they are centered around their own lives. That's not an insult, but they are selfish motivations in the end. They are thinking about what being a huntress could do for themselves, not others.
Ruby is the opposite. She wants to be a huntress purely because they do good like in her bedtime stories, nothing more. Helping others who can't help themselves and never asking for anything in return. She's the smaller, more honest soul.

It could be any number of things. They could know of Cinder's activities before she came to Vale and are trying to trace them. They could have found a completely different lead which traces back to Cinder. It could be anything, it doesn't have to tie back to the Haven academy
