I live in Japan and I just got back from watching Zootopia on its premiere date.

Ask me anything.
>>
>>82125884
Did you like it?
>>
>>82125905
It was fantastic. What about you?
>>
>>82125946
I thought it was great!
>>
>>82125884
As a citizen of the country that represents our best and last hope:
Do you think it will find massive success in Japan?
Does the movie play well with your own cultural heritage?
>>
>>82125884
Are you a liar?
>>
DID U RIKE IT???
>>
>>82126109
Why do you think Japan represents "our best and last hope"? You're not one of those deluded /pol/yps who thinks of Japan like "the good ol' days"?
>>
>>82125884

How full was the theater?
How did other people seem to like it?
Were girls swooning over Nick?
Were guys all about Judy?
Was it mostly kids?
>>
>>82125884
What did the chinks think? Were there lots of SUGOI moments?
>>
>>82126219

"Last best hope"... to break over a Billion Dollars.
>>
Is it going to make a bajillion dollars?
>>
>>82126219
Nah, the first line was mostly a joke at their expense.
You are kind of a "last hope" though in the sense that it came out there last, so Japan is going to be the last big wave of income for the movie, so that's the last place it can get what >>82126259 said.
>>
>>82125884
Will they get the message or will they think it's just
a funny cartoon?
>>
>>82125884
Is it true that they changed the break-up scene at the conference? In the dub, what was the reason for Nick to get mad at Judy?
>>
I too live in Japan, OP. This country isn't big enough for the both of us.
>>
>>82126591
The anon that originally said that was lying, no source or anything was given. So the story is the same
>>
OP here.

>>82126109
I should state that I'm not Japanese. I'm American living in Japan. From what I've seen at the theater, the people did enjoy it and I think it will do just fine performance-wise. I wouldn't go so far as to say it will be massively successful.

>>82126248
The theater I went to was about 2/3 full, but I do know that two different shows later in the day were almost packed. (I went at the earliest showing at 9 am).

I don't know about the reaction from boys and girls, but for the show I went to at least, there were hardly any children. It seemed to be more of a group outing or a dating movie. I saw a good number of couples in attendance.

>>82126274
That's a good question, but I really doubt it'll have any kind of social impact on the people. It's an interesting thought though, because here in Japan, the people really do think in segregated terms. Anyone who doesn't look like them is "a foreigner." It doesn't matter if you were born and raised here. That also counts for citizenship. You're just not a full Japanese citizen if you're not ethnically fully Japanese. Even biracial (half Japanese, half whatever) get grief. So a movie that tries to get the viewer to look past these differences in Japan is kind of fascinating, and I do wish I had natives to get their opinions on it. As the movie just came out, there's really no one to talk to about it yet, but perhaps in the future, I'll get the opportunity to ask around.

>>82126673
I feel the same way sometimes when I see other fellow Westerners.

Also, I should mention I watched the subbed version, not the dubbed.
>>
>>82126933
>Also, I should mention I watched the subbed version, not the dubbed.

Then why do you think that the audience was full of couples and not children?

Kinda obvious isn't it.
>>
>>82126933
>hardly any children

Yeah I found that too. Depends what time of day you go, but definitely I found plenty of adults in the screenings for this film in London that I saw, which is great.

Not like the Good Fucking Dinosaur, that was a complete shitshow, screaming kids everywhere and an awful film to boot
>>
>>82127013
That is a really good point that neither of us had thought of.
>>
>>82127051
>I've watched the movie on the 8th week in an unpopular cinema on early afternoon.
>the cinema is absolute empty - just as planned
>right before the movie starts a mom with her young daughter enter the room and sit down right behind me
>noisy kid will ruin my movie
>I move 5 rows to the front
>the girl and her mom are quiet for the whole movie
>I feel bad now that I had prejudices
>>
OP, were you the fat fuck who spilled his popcorn two rows down from the top row earlier this evening? New Toei Cinemas/hotel in Shinjuku? You made me wanna punch a wall.
>>
>>82127837
>going to Shinjuku
Eww did you catch a disease?
>>
>>82127920
Shinjuku is a perfectly fine area, much the same as Shibuya/Ginza/etc. You're either new here or one of those foreigners who needs to feel special if you think otherwise.
>>
>>82127948
Nah Shinjuku is the prostitute slums. Shibuya and Ginza are far more high class.
>>
>>82125884

how is the Japanese dub?

favourite performance in the dub?

sorry I love dubbing, yes english dubs of anime and Japanese dubs of cartoons.
>>
>>82127349
>not wanting to see it with a packed theatre
Nigga half the reason I've seen it seven times is to see other people's reactions to all the great scenes like the asylum tiger jump scare.
>>
>>82126933
>So a movie that tries to get the viewer to look past these differences in Japan is kind of fascinating
Anime has been doing that for a long time, though of course not that many people watch it compared to Disney movies and such.
>>
have box office returns for zootopia japan come back yet?
>>
>>82125884
Did the people in the theater seem to enjoy the movie?
>>
I want to know if the racism message is going to register with the audience at all.
>>
>>82126258
This was JAPAN. How the fuck does op know what Chinese audiences think, Pinky?
>>

>>
>>82126933

Wait, you mean it was English voices with Japanese subtitles, or...?
>>
Does anyone knows the reaction of the chinese or arabs to this movie?
>>
>>82129888
No idea what the Arab reaction was, but in China it seems to be doing extremely well (so well that fennecs are now highly sought after there) despite some criticism from the government.

It's not, though. And it's not even as homogenized as you think.

Japan is the opposite of Germany in this way:

>In Germany, it is against the law to say that Nazi war crimes never happened
>In Japan, it is against the law to say that Imperialist Japan war crimes actually happened

The Japanese are super fuckin serious that they never, EVER did anything wrong in the entire history of their nation.
>>
>>82131181
I'm not aware of any such law, and things are not that simple in Japan. Some people try to airbrush history, some don't.

>>In Japan, it is against the law to say that Imperialist Japan war crimes actually happened

It's not against the law, it's just really, really, REALLY socially discouraged.

Media companies do censor all imported media that includes "insults" to Japan or references history they aren't proud of.

The Simpsons episode "Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo" has been banned from broadcast and home video in Japan (their DVD sets skip it and it was never aired).

South Park is likewise censored; the Chinpokomon episode and the Ladder to Heaven episode are banned from broadcast and home video.

That's just the way the Japanese, culturally. They prefer to pretend anything negative in their nation's past never happened and, while they LOVE to satirize others, they ban all satire of Japan from outside sources.
>>
>>82131181
>>82131349
Sounds about right, Japanese people tend to be full of themselves and, even when it comes to mass-marketing, usually put their own people before anybody else regardless of population-size.

Australians were furious over the Simpsons episode where they visited Australia. But they still broadcast it.

Brazilians were furious over the Simpsons episode where they visited Brazil and the tourism board even tried to sue Fox for lost revenue. But they still broadcast the episode.

So yes, Japan does stick out as being poor sports when compared to everyone else. They can dish it out but they can't take it.
>>
>>82131349
The manga/anime Zipang is about a modern Japanese Navy ship that timeslips back to the Battle of Midway while en route to a training excercise with the US Navy. They decide not to help Japan win the war, and denounce Japan's wartime actions. Colonial Japan is depicted in a negative way. The manga won the Kodansha Manga Award.

The recently started anime Joker Game is set in the late 1930s, and while it so far hasn't directly addressed any of the events of the time it does have a very negative slant to it and makes fun of the patriotic zeal the main character has in the beginning.
>>

>Australians were furious over the Simpsons episode where they visited Australia. But they still broadcast it.

I would be mad too. They told everyone how to win "Knifey Spoony".

I can kind of confirm. I was told not to mention anything about WWII and the things they did to my country when I helped tour some Japanese college students.

The funny thing was that the group ended up going to some small museums here anyway and the museum people showed them WWII stuff.

The reason is that being wrong or making a mistake in Japanese culture is a BIG deal.

In Japan, you are told and expected to absolutely fucking LAY INTO anyone who makes a mistake, on any level, be it a corrupt politician or the lady at AM/PM who gives you the wrong change. And I mean absolutely, positively UNFORGIVING in your reaction to their mistake. Just fucking DESTROY them.

You think I'm exaggerating, but their reasoning is that it discourages further mistakes on the part of the person apologizing (and if you're the one who makes the mistake, you are expected to absolutely prostrate and demean yourself for forgiveness).

The end result, though, is a very cold and aggressive culture with 0 Tolerance for imperfections. People live in a perpetual state of dread of making a mistake or disappointing someone else. It's one of the reasons the suicide rate is so high; people would rather kill themselves than face the brutal social hazing of having made a mistake or failed in some way.

So that trickles into every aspect of their lives, including their historical revisionism. To accept that they committed heinous war atrocities in WWII and during their Imperialist era would be to accept that they were wrong; that they made a mistake. And the Japanese can't handle that, so they prefer to pretend it never happened, because culturally the cost of failing or being wrong is basically "your life".

>But the question do they even know about it? Like is it stricken from their history and textbooks?

Most of WWII is omitted from text books and only covered in a generalized sense, skipping straight to post-war Reconstruction.

The Tokyo Trials were, essentially, a farce and most of the highest ranking officers who committed those war crimes got off with little to no consequences. Those officers went on to take positions in the Ministry of Education, determining what would and would not go into the history books to be taught in schools.

So, naturally, anything about Nanking or Comfort Women or POW slave labor was excised. Most Japanese today know next to nothing about their country's part in WWII; many even think that they won it because life is pretty good now, so of course they won, right?

>The end result, though, is a very cold and aggressive culture with 0 Tolerance for imperfections. People live in a perpetual state of dread of making a mistake or disappointing someone else.

When I was over there, what I noticed even more than that was that, culturally, you are never, ever, EVEREVEREVEREVEREVER supposed to accept a compliment. That is seen as being rude and egotistical.

So when someone compliments you, you have to reply with a fucking novel explaining why you are shit and don't deserve nice things.

It's fine when you just say, "no I was just lucky" or "thank you, but I need more practice", but the more the other person presses the compliment the more you have to self-denigrate yourself so no one thinks you've got an ego.

So the end result is a culture that lives in fear of making a mistake, but ALSO lives in fear of being complimented for NOT making a mistake.

They're basically psychotic.

I've heard that part of the reason for the historical revisionism is that the Asian version of the Nuremberg trials didn't go nearly as hard. The American occupation had to go through the existing Japanese bureaucracy instead of direct administration a la Germany because no one could speak Nipponese, so they deliberately avoided stirring the pot. When 1.) the emperor himself was never forced to accept any sort of responsibility and 2.) a lot of people who had definitely committed war crimes managed to get back into government afterwards it sort of gave a free pass to Japanese conservatives. Especially in the 2nd half of the occupation, when the US let a lot of former military-clique types back into government as a way to say fuck you to the Japanese communists.

It's a complicated story anon. I wouldn't credit it entirely to "cultural differences."

Indeed.

In Japan, it is next to impossible for a foreigner to attain citizenship. They can get working visas that are extended nigh-indefinitely (depending on their productivity), but citizenship is almost unattainable. And you can't get citizenship via marriage, in case anybody asks.

So most Japanese who live outside of metropolitan areas like Tokyo and Kyoto, and don't live near military bases, can literally go their entire lives without ever seeing someone of a different ethnicity.

When I visited Takayama, I was gawked at by people on the streets because they had never once seen a white person.

I can only imagine how black people are treated.

In a hospital/mental health ward, they have muzzles for humans that are prone to biting/spitting

It's a little strange for children to get a hold of one,but you can buy one in almost any sex shop

So they probably got the muzzle from one of their parents' dresser drawers

You didn't notice the wolf who got muzzled when Judy first arrived at the police station? ("He bared his teeth first!" He was voiced by the guy who makes great spliced instagram vids. The difficulty of attaining citizenship in Japan has nothing to do with what we're talking about here.

By the way there's a member of the Japanese Diet who is Finnish.

>So most Japanese who live outside of metropolitan areas like Tokyo and Kyoto, and don't live near military bases, can literally go their entire lives without ever seeing someone of a different ethnicity.
I hardly ever come into contact with foreigners but that doesn't mean I don't know anything about them.

>since my dreads would mean I'd almost certainly get pulled aside for "carrying drugs," and I don't feel like spending three weeks in detention without even getting charged.

When I was visiting Kyoto, the shops would make my wife leave her purse at the couner and I would have to leave any bags I had with them to prevent shoplifting. I noticed only foreigners were being made to leave purses and bags at the counter.

Found out later it was a common practice, as the Japanese think that only foreigners shoplift, so they don't make Japanese leave purses and bags.

Personally, I was just grateful when I found shops and restaurants that didn't have "no foreigner allowed" signs on the door.

Even though I speak perfectly intelligible Japanese, I always prefaced everything with "Sumimasen, watashi no nihongo wa amari yokunai desu. Demo..." It showed humility, which gives the Japanese boners and made them more willing to listen to me and be polite.

The Japanese love to mock Americans for speaking in -masu form and using desu, but we're taught to speak that way because it's polite form and we want to be considerate.

Yet they hate, hate HATE it even more when Americans DON'T use -masu form and try to speak casually, as they consider it rude.

So they've got us at a catch 22.

That almost never happens unless you have some sort rare talent (like being able to play basketball really well). In real life, what happens is that people pass some sort of competency bar and them are judged on how their particulars help shape a class. "Okay he's got a 3.4 GPA but his SAT is 1500/1600 and he swims and he's black. That's pretty unique. He'll be a good match for the 20 white dudes with a slightly better GPA and the same everything else."

>>
>>82132923

Yeah and America is a nation of immigrants and melting pot culture with great relationships with its neighbors compared to Japan.

It's not that people are unaware other cultures exist. It's they don't really have enough understanding to actually do anything useful and don't want to have to explain it to those even more ignorant and so they just gloss it over.

Just like we Americanize foreign stuff, Japan Japanizes foreign stuff. Only mores because they don't have as strong of a "celebrate cultural diversity!" movement.

It's not like anime just completely ignores the nationalities and cultures of foreigners. Though sometimes it does, either because it's irrelevant or because the character isn't defined by their culture in any meaningful way. There's a lot of ambiguity in anime, and borders between cultures, genders and ages may be vague or non-existent. But what you see in something like Strike Witches, Kiniro Mosaic or Planetes is that there isn't some "us vs. them" thing going.

I know this is one of the most common ones, but I really fucking love the tax evasion scene. Nick goes from being at an all-time high for smugness, until Judy utters 3 words. "Felony tax evasion." In that moment, the sudden fear and uncertainty that washes over Nick's face is priceless, as this is probably the first time somebody's really "Gotten to him" in 20+ years. And on top of that, the rabbit throws in a sexually charged joke to mock him, it all just makes the scene so perfect.
