This was during the time period where she was constantly portrayed as an asshole, and while her hearts in the right place she's not going about it the right way. ...as you say, and also that Willis has apparently, with this strip, introduced another gay person, instead of advancing the plot(s) in any particular way. Sal/Malaya's rivalry hasn't been a thing for months, suddenly he's bringing it up AND adding a Marcie's got a crush on Malaya angle. It's distracting, it feels lazy, it's honestly a little insulting because it lends credence to Sal's dickish possessiveness (the only reason Marcie's branching out for more close friends is because of Malaya's hips and ass).
Maybe focus on the people and conflicts you've already introduced instead of jamming yet another one in the clown car?
