Be honest, /co/. Has any animation you've seen done as much worldbuilding in as short a time as Zootopia did during the train scene?

Finally got around to seeing this today, and it was a lot better than I thought it would be.

It's kind of bizarre to say this, but I actually liked this about as much as (maybe even a little more than) Kung Fu Panda 3. I know the Disney movie usually wins Best Animated Feature by default, but I'd actually be okay with it this year. That is, if Finding Dory doesn't do better (which I somehow doubt).
>>
>>81957848
We're about to hit $860 Million gross, and the Japanese don't get it until Saturday. I doubt Finding Dory is going to be able to top that unless it pulls some Minions-tier bullshit.

do you reckon that whole sequence was nearly done with just nick and when the plot changed it was actually really easy to rejigger?

the movie did have stupid detail for something that apparently got put together at the last minute.
>>
>>81957848
>Kung Fu Panda 3
That movie sucked. No way it can be on the same tier with furrytopia.
>>
>>81958029
Nah, unlikely. Nick was always a Zootopia native. No reason for him to get the grand tour of the city when he had always been able to see the bright lights from his slum.
>>
>>81957819
He didn't say he is a furry because he likes Hopps. He said he is now a furry and incidentally likes Hopps.

Then again, depending on exactly how much you like Hopps, that may well make you a furry on it's own.

Its not worldbuilding, but the closest thing I can compare it to is the Test Drive sequence from HTTYD in terms of sheer spectacle and grandeur

The HTTYD sequence had way better music, I wish they had done orchestral music over the train sequence

I know it made sense given his backstory, but I really wish they didn't make Nick a police officer at the end.

Not saying he should be a con man for the rest of his life or anything, but now the sequel will need a new "sleezy member of the criminal world that has information Judy and Nick need" character. Eh, I guess it will probably be the weasel or bat.

Ignoring Shakira, I was really impressed to see how much the writers could establish in the 1:50~ of runtime it had.

Okay, this has been mentioned like 5 times now. Nothing is stopping me from talking about the movie, but I'm talking to a wall essentially. The point is to join the thread and everyone is discussing the film, but everyone here just talks about OCs and fanfiction stories. I can't control what you all talk about and if you're having fun then that's great, but it's a bit of a shame when a Zootopia thread is really just a "Zootopia fanfiction and OC discussion" thread in disguise.

But we've seen the outside world. Bunnyburrow is over 200 miles outside Zootopia. We also heard of Podunk in Deerbrooke County. Zootopia is basically a kind of New York City and is huge enough to have its own flags and agencies and such, but the whole state/country/world isn't Zootopia.
>>
>>81959150
One thing I will add. I don't see judy and Nick getting together.
>>
>>81958920
I dunno.

As an elseworld with no established connection to our own besides not!NYC megacity, they could push the whole "social issues" concept in some creative directions.

Like-----this world clearly has a history, presumably a time when predators and prey were in perpetual conflict, with the formers trying to hunt and eat the latter. Maybe the next movie could address a sudden resurgence in that practice, since in the setting it's basically cannibalism, and the general question of what it means to be civilized.

Or what lead to the establishment of this semi-peaceful coexistence between so many species in the planet? Is specism a bigger issue elsewhere? Will the stigmas against predators carry over into the next movie, despite the original conspirator being arrested? Stuff like that would be interesting to focus on..

By Cressida Cowell. In the books, everybody had a dragon, like it was a coming-of-age ritual for a kid to venture into the untamed Dragon caves and come out with one. Hiccup was the chief's son and was entitled to a fucking awesome dragon but being the wimp he was he just grabbed something and ran, and it turned out to be a shitty little asshole dragon with no teeth, hence the name. Instead of everybody hating dragons like in the movie, they just saw them as tools or pets, and the special thing about Hiccup was that he was the only one that bothered to learn and speak their language.
>>
>>81958920
I want more backstory on nick. We literally know nothing about him besides his dream of joining boy scouts, and concept from proto-zootopia that most likely wont be canon.
>>
>>81959290
It's not really a "huge enough" thing. I thought all cities had their own flags; you just don't see those flags outside of city hall.

Have you looked at the HTTYD artbook where they have some art from when the movie was gonna follow closely to the books? Soooooooo comfy
>>
>>81959288
Nah, I'm from California. They just happened to be in the bookstore and I was crazy into dragons at the time. I read them since the second book, but stopped getting them long before the movie was a thing.
>>
>>81959345
Well, until directly contradicted by a sequel, it was just Nick and his mom. No dad, no siblings.
>>
>>81959336
Yeah never mind, never read this series. Oh well. I guess the movie's adaptation is more suited for action though.
>>
>>81959179
Who says Zootopia isn't a city-state?
>>
>>81959331
Read the wiki article on the production, even Chris Sanders thought the concept was too juvenile for a movie
>>
>>81959345
We can sorta guess that he never really had any friends because he closed off his emotions to people so that they couldn't hurt him
Finnick could've been his friend but Rich just had to ruin it on twitter
>>
>>81959414
Well yeah I agree with that, but that doesn't mean they aren't comfy books.
>>
>>81959335

>>81959319
Who knows, maybe in time.
>>
>>81959353
Shit, that sounds awesome. I'll dig around. God, I loved those books back then.

>>81959368
I'm sure the series would have been awful if directly adapted to screen, but in some ways to me they went too far. They removed almost all complex character traits from Toothless (who started as a whiny little shit who very incredibly slowly started to understand and listen to his master) and by extension took a lot of character from the world by taking away the dragons' speech ability.

Seems I'll have to rewatch it though, back when httyd came out I was in a total "animated things are only for babies" mentality.
>>
>>81959439
The writers have never said they are not getting together, they also didn't say they are. Unless Rich posted a new tweet lately that confirms it?

Last I heard they openly said that they are "deciding where it should go" No one knows where Nick and Judy will go from here, they're friends at the moment is the only thing confirmed, which kinda sucks but it's what it is

One mayor and one assistant mayor.

Why Bellwether didn't just run for mayor herself and get elected on the sheep vote, instead of giving it to Lionheart by being on his ticket? Assuming that animals tend to vote their own species and they use the usual first past the post voting system, a lion would normally be at a massive disadvantage against a sheep in a race.

It's funny. When Disney couples get together, everyone go "Ugh, so cliché".

This one time they avoid ALL openly romantic stuff that happens between a boy and a girl and instead focus on chemistry between protagonists and their character development, which means what could happen next is left to individual iterpretation (this includes the "you know you love me" line)... And EVERYONE wants the main characters to get together.

Yeah, and guess why, because said boy and girl worked SO well in the film together and built such a wonderful chemistry that we WANT them to advance to the next step now. It wasn't forced, it didn't feel pushed, the romance step wasn't there, but now that it's shown they would be so wonderful together, people want them together. People hate it when it's forced and cliche, but this is a match made in heaven
