Is it at all possible to make a cartoon/comic about gender issues/sexuality without coming across as hamfisted?
>>
>>81891891
ha that a funny comic

post more
>>
>>81891891
No because the entire debate is hamfisted
>>
>>81891891
yes but the people interested in making comics about that stuff tend to be untalented, stupid, or locked in an echo chamber that forbids constructive criticism disabling their ability to make anything of worth.

Nobody wants to sit through a lecture about being nice to someone that has habits they can't relate to. The best you can realistically do, is to just bring in your characters, and have them face the normal problems that everyone faces, and let the audience learn to sympathize with them on a human level.

I doubt you could in three panels, I imagine you'd have more luck with 32 pages but it depends on how deep you'd want to go into the topic. Typically simplistic statements come off as hamfisted but can ring true to the most people without the background/details of the situation bogging down the point.

That doesn't excuse lazy writing though for serial works because the background/details MAKE it a long spanning story. I'm just saying in terms of a one shot plot/statement it could work narratively, but without being hamfisted I'm not quite certain.
>>
>>81891891
Yes.
>>
>>81891891
It’s possible, but it pretty hard to do so AND be successful. You can write a story about the gayness (say, a story about a kid growing up in a conservative household who realized he likes the idea of fucking dudes) and have it be really well written with a good plot and characterization and all of that…

But no one is going to fucking read it. The people who actually are interested in buying comic books are mostly interested in super heroes punching each other. This isn’t somewhere like Europe or Japan where there’s a diverse enough market to support something who’s blurb reads the back of a Timelife Classics VHS.

So, the best you can really hope for is to take it and slip in the back. You draw people in with the superhero punching and then get them to stay with the drama of dealing with alternate sexual orientations. But then the problem is that you can’t put the gender shit front and center without it becoming ham handed like you wanted not to be, so it can’t really be ABOUT that and only that. And given how the Identity Politics Wars have been playing out in geek culture of late, everyone is super fed up with race/gender issues, so you’ve got next to no margin for error.

Literally just have a character who's trans and does shit. That's it. That's all you have to do. Having the character exist will force people to think about them being trans and acknowledge they're real.

The moment you have them start shouting about "MUH TRANSITIONING" shit it becomes hamfisted.

It's the exact same thing as gay characters; There are GAY characters and there are characters who are gay.

If she was just called a futa and not trans I'd have no problem with her.
>>
yeah sure, but the whole thing is centered around politics, and politics are always hamfisted.

give me one good comic/cartoon about political issues that isn't hamfisted. maybe King of the Hill, but king of the hill is about typical texas bubba's, and the message is usually how weird the world is today compared to conservative living.
>>
>>81893002
Real trannies can actually sit down and discuss the issues at hand, as opposed to comics like that one where it's just "push person out of clique for questioning". You see ostracizeation happen a lot in sjw-esque comics.
>>
>>81893002
Tumblr and SJWs want you to think out of a group of 10 random people one or two are transsexuals. They want to believe trannies or genderqueer or whatevers make up an amount anywhere near relevant.

Im not saying the issue is about politics, but the issue has alot to due with politics, hence the term "Gender Politics"

I remember seeing one king of the hill show where peggy meets a drag queen. the entire episode hank likes the normal guy behind the drag queen facade, and even invites him to have a beer with his friends.

my point is, yeah it can be a personal story but most of the time it really isn't.

the entire reason sjws make such a fetish out of defending trannies is that there are hardly any trannies so hardly anyone has to interact with them in real life

people who interact with trannies irl realize they're a bunch of creepy narcissistic BPD cases and stop having anything to do with them.
>>
>>81893785
because a person really doesn't have a sexual or gender "identity"
>>
If by "gender issues" you're referring to trannies then the only issue they have to deal with is the fact that they are all batshit crazy.

>>
>>81893916
this is what I'm talking about having it to do with politics

this is why it will never not be hamfisted.

>I have opinion about thing
>I have different opinion about thing
>all of our things are in the conceptual realm, therefore we can be arguing for eternity about thing.
>political ideals about thing occur
>>
>>81893916

not really, it's just that the actual problem is that a lot of people have NPD and BPD
>>

>>
>>81894022
Its fine to have your opinion man but you don't get to decide that for someone else. If you don't see people based on their sexual identity or whatever then that's great but you can't decide that invalidates what they feel or experience.

No because nobody does it in a way that's realistic, because that's not interesting. Its always a "im always the victim" story that drags on because "nobody will ever understand me and I'm constantly ostracized in society" when that never happens in real life, just their extremely closed circle online which is easily invaded.

I see more bitching from gender identity online than I do in society because SJWs live online and are afraid of the spooky real world, it's all in their heads
>>
>>81894179
> If you don't see people based on their sexual identity or whatever then that's great but you can't decide that invalidates what they feel or experience.

>>
>>81894461

>>
>>81894512
that since the entire issue of gender politics and sexual identity is political and not objective, it will always be hamfisted.
>>

Pretty much this. That is, if you treat it like a debate, which people are doing more often than not.

There are coming of age stories about sexuality that aren't hamfisted, but they're usually about straight people. Writers are currently incapable of writing a gay romance without hanging a neon sign on it saying LOOK THERE'S HOMOS HERE AREN'T WE PROGRESSIVE
>>
>>81893407
I think the point is suppose to be by monkey paw rules. so she gets what she wants and the magic also make others feel too insignificant to try to get her.

>>81895892
It's the modern evolution of the white man's burdern.

Originally, we saw these poor people, living in mud huts, so we set up civilization in their area, yeah we took resources, and different countries were ruled differently, but mostly there was imposition of law and order and out structured concept of fairness.

Then, of course, that fell out of style, and was seen as simply oppressing people, because we weren't treating a group that has spent the last 2,000 year chasing gazelle and sucking cow-anus (instead of inventing the wheel, metallurgy, or the written word.) like immaculate equals in all instances.

Now, it is all our fault that they're not equal, and we should feel shame and flagellate ourselves. Hell, the two chief examples of why it's a bad idea to let them do their thing in a civilized setting are held up as examples of why they're oppressed!
>>
>>81893002
Yes. I may think transsexualism is a symptom of deeper seated mental illnesses but I'M not going to be that strawman from the webcomics that gets up on their soap box every time they walk by. Are you? I don't think anyone is.

Of course. Jaime Hernandez's Love & Rocket stuff is NEVER hamfisted about that stuff, his bro Gilbert can be a little bit sometimes, though.
>>
>>81895966
This is very true, I mean sure I bet there are some unique issues to a gay romance or some other type of coming of age story for a trans person. However I think it still needs to be told in the narrative and as a story, not some bullshit hamfisted "look at us" kind of way
>>
>>81891891
Yeah Steven Universe does a great job of it. It's inspired by anime like Revolutionary Girl Utena which does a great job of it too.

Hell motherfucking X Men could double as a metaphor for any oppressed group without getting too hamfisted. It's really not hard to make metaphors that relate to society at large.

Sort of related to what you're saying, but Devlin Waugh was one of the most popular 2000AD characters back in the early 90s despite being a) a new character and (b) a gigantic homosexual (in every sense). Devlin was as camp as an entire field of pink tents, not unlike if you got Stephen Fry to mainline steroids for years, but he was also funny and capable of beating vampires to death with his bare hands. Which he did, with tremendous gusto.

Its the Freddy Mercury / Rob Halford thing, I suppose - nobody really cares what you're into so long as you're cool.

Thinking on it more it might not even be the writers' fault.

I mean look at Steven Universe. That's the gayest thing since an old time with the Flintstones. But it gets censored in some countries and Sugar's having to BS it by saying gems don't have genders in order to keep CN's appeal to the puritan soccer mom demographic. In this political climate you either write about gays purposely to be progressive or you don't get to write about gays.

The US is a big place, big enough that it has significant differences in population and culture and basically everything from state to state. In certain parts of the US, they're basically backwards-ass radical muslim goat fuckers, except instead of muslim they're christian. They're the same in every other respect though, to the point where they actually say that ISIS and shit like that has the right idea, they're just worshipping the wrong god.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy_u4U7-cn8

>As a foreignfag, I keep seeing how all this crap about representation and diversity and accepting the minority du jour seems to come from the US and Western Europe only.
At the same time there's other parts of the country that exist almost as a radical backlash to the insane nutjobs from above. It's hard to imagine unless you live there, but if your neighbour was an insane fucking neo nazi screaming on the front lawn about the jews and the niggers every fucking day, you might be tempted to take special action to help jews and niggers to compensate. The political situation of the US is divided into far extremes because of how it's like a coalition of countries living together, like if Sweden and Saudi Arabia were put together under the same roof.

Makes sense though. Charisma and talent counts for a lot. Imagine a battle for popularity and acceptance - in the red corner you've got Freddy Mercury, the Queen, the man reputed to have set up a sex tent backstage at a performance and who made Bono uncomfortable by trying to seduce him at LiveAid. Meanwhile in the Blue Corner you've got any of the wet blankets here >>81895565. One of them is liked a lot more, even by people who would otherwise be very homophobic and who was active in a time and place that was significantly less accepting of alternative lifestyles than today.

On the other hand, writing "important" things allows you to get away with all sorts of bad habits. Its so much easier to lecture then it is to be charming and funny.

The gems are effectively women, yeah. They're monosex which is truly nonhuman, because they don't have anything like a comparable reproductive system, but in terms of gender they are more-or-less all a gender which is effectively human female.

There's this Japanese thing called Houseki no Kuni which is about, uh, an alien race of gems (it predates SU). It kind of varies between trippy space shit, creepy Buddhist enemies, yaoi romance dynamics and dumb slice-of-life but the gems in that are all kind of trap-y, they're more androgynous.

K6BD angels are weird in a bunch of ways because they truly aren't male or female but possess the capacity to change the longer they are outside of the void, their spiritual home. Systems of behaviour are put in place to keep them on track, and the oldest established one assumes a male gender. For some angels that provokes a reaction. I think it ties into some setting stuff that will come out about angels and devils in that world too, but that's me just reading into it. I don't know if the author really intends that.

Another pic covering the cast. This one is a bitch to translate IIRC because the Japanese text uses a gender-neutral term rather than he or she.

It was that, and the enormous problems they had getting the Judge Dredd crossover story "Fetish" published. I think it was intended to come out a few months after Swimming in Blood and it ended up taking something like three years between rewrites and several different artists dropping out.

That said he's had several since... I want to say Chasing Herod? The really long, weird one. The last one was in 2007/8, but the first books recently got a reprint so there might be more on the way at some point.

>>81898216
It sure is! This website has links to all the story titles with when and where they were published in the box on the right marked "thrills"
http://www.2000ad.org/?zone=thrill&page=profiles&choice=devlin

Works for all the other 2000AD stories too, going all the way back to the 70s.

I've probably got a link to some of them, if you'd like to read them right now.
>>
>>81898487
Is Chasing Herod the one that's more about him being a Vatican occult investigator? I've probably fucked up the dates, I thought Fetish came after that one, Reign of Frogs, that whole run.
>>
>>81898487
Devlin Waugh is a good example of the extreme idea-space crossover between 2000AD and Image comics.

I should try and make some sort of quiz where you have to guess if a character is from Image or 2000AD.

It was all part of that one long arc, yeah. Chasing Herod was the first part, then Reign of Frogs, then Sirius Rising. Its got some good moments, like the occult auction, but good Grudd it drags on so long and the finale ends up being so anticlimactic.

I looked it up on Barney, Swimming in Blood (the first arc) was in 1992, Brief Encounter (the intended setup to the Dredd crossover) was 1993 and then Fetish ended up coming out in 1997. The Herod arc, the next "proper" Devlin standalon, appeared in 1999. Its a terrible indictment of how terribly 2000AD was run in the 90s that they let that happen.

The most recent story had him infiltrating the lower depths of Chinese hell via the Radlands of Ji in order to stop a qlippothic swarm from devouring reality, and it had Colin McNeil on art, so it was a return to form.

Actually what they want is to have a female version of the character.
Like link...just link. Same shtick hero of time main character of a zelda game. Except its a lady cos when you started the game you picked 'female'.
>>
>>81899399
I don't know what to call it other than stupid. Make a new character is the best answer to the problem, but I can see people being annoyed by the the whole Ms. Pacman deal. Instead, writers should make a new character that doesn't piggyback on the fame of a male character. Too bad Sif didn't take off because the girls didn't read it.

I know several ranging from a toxic narcisist to a down to earth creative. gender dysphoria is a mental illness and should be treated as such, any sane trans person will acknowledge as much. however acknowledging that someone has a serious disorder and treating it as such isn't something SJWs do.

acceptance of one unusual quirk does not mean you give assholes a free pass.

No, because if that female version existed in that particular game, a male version would not exist, thereby replacing the male version as the definitive MC for that iteration of Zelda.

To be fair, not a lot of people knew Samus was a woman until Smash Brothers. Also, as a guy you have to more options of icons to look up to. Technically we can all look up to whoever we want but that is looking through the eyes of an adult. Children find it easier to relate to people that are closer to them in appearance. Chalk it up to evolution or something. I thought Lara Croft was the coolest thing ever growing up though and we're literal opposites.

The thing I heard most on places like TMS was they wanted a choice. If you want link to be a man, cool he's a man. If they want link to be a woman, shes a woman. That is apparently what they are arguing for. As to how that resolves the issues of how link relates to zelda and whoever...that I don't got no answers to and i doubt they ever bothered thinking of it.

That's because it does. No ive seen comment sections about Linkle. The general concensus of those that hate linkle but want a female link is they just want the option to pick what link gender they think suits them.

Some are a bit silly wanting gender neutral (which if you ask me link already is) or gender fluid link options. But nah its mostly just 'i want the option to pick link as a girl'.

This is such a stupid argument though. there are already games out there that let you choose your character's appearance and sex at creation. Not every game needs to be like that. And why all the focus on Link? Why not raise these same complaints about Master Chief, or Kratos, or Ratchet & Clank?

I wish. Houseki no Kuni, the agender trap gem manga posted above.
It's actually really good and had the kind of 'deep' world building that SU fans fawn over, but with a bit more ambiguity than "evil empire comin to take over"
also the central mystery revolves around the extinction of humans and their transformation into / succession by the races present in the setting, which I find far more interesting that SU's premise

I have two trans friends. Both MtF. I've known one since middle school and the other since high school. Both are very popular, but they'd also be popular if they were girls from the start. Very fashion forward, friendly, will explain things you don't understand about being trans instead of blowing the fuck up, both have degrees (one is working on a Master's), a well paying job, and a fun but not too crazy lifestyle.

What you get a lot of on tumblr/maybe the Internet in general is trans people who wouldn't have friends if they weren't trans. They're weird. They look like they smell funny. Strange fetishes they insist on sharing with everyone. Way too excited over shit like Steven Universe (not knocking any fans here, but you know what I'm talking about). They'd be freaks even if they weren't trans.

>>

>Do these people actually like hang out trannies and tolerate their presence in real life?

No, they tend to be isolated people and the people who do interact with them are doing it for some social justice brownie points. Usually to tell their friend's how progressive they are that they hang out with a transexual.

The rate of suicide for transexuals is usually like 10 times higher than any other group because they are mentally ill and have distanced themselves of their actual support systems.

TLDR; teach children the difference between sex and gender and we wouldn't have the problem of people mutilating themselves to conform to a societal pressure.

>The Abominable Charles Christopher (haha infinite hiatus)
>Vibe
>Wonderella (a female protag, but she's a good one)
>Wondermark
>Helvetica (haha infinite hiatus)
>Blaster Nation
>It Hurts
>Empowered (female protagonist, but it's pretty okay. Especially since the creator is basically just uploading his old volumes online, doing commentary along the way.)

That should give you a varied RSS feed to start out with.
>>
Its possible and really not that hard to do.

I mean, unless you're gonna sit down and just write about that, but even still. Normal ass stories just need to have characters that are jist PoC. Dont need to be "Ayo muddfukas im BLACk, dats rite BBBBBLACK", just have them be black, or any other race. Same with gay or transexual people. No straight person constantly refers to their s/o as " husband" or "wife", they might say it once or twice to establish it, but its never " My girlfriend, Sarah" every time they want to talk about Sarah.

Comic writers just suck at subtlety. They're shitty soap opera writers. Open up any comic that came out last week from DC or Marvel and i would bet actual money that it ends on a full page reveal of a character, and a shitty cliffhanger that gets resolved immediately or outright ignored for the next two issues, or more.

Fucking this. If you are good at telling stories and developing interesting characters and decide to include some social or political issues in your stories from time to time, it can work well.

If however you go out of your way to create a political diatribe in comic or cartoon format, it's automatically going to be shit. It will always be shit. Because you're putting politics first and entertainment value, characters and storytelling second.
