It's true it's near impossible to get rid of he/she etc. right now because it's so ingrained in language and culture. However, I don't think having different reproductive organs for example is a large enough difference to warrant separate pronouns. If men and women had completely different roles in society, then I think it'd be logical to have separate pronouns, but that's really not the case anymore, at least in the more developed countries. I wouldn't be in favour of 'they' as the sole singular pronoun, simply because it might be useful to make it a bit more clear when you're referring to a single person or a group when speaking in the 3rd person. I don't really know what would be a suitable alternative though.

Almost all of those japanese pronouns carry specific gender connotations in context, though. A man will call another man 'omae' as a masculine or derogatory/inflammatory means of addressing them, but will use "omae" on a woman to infer ownership of her. Just about the only completely leveled one is "kimi" which is basically looking down on someone regardless of their gender due to their age and/or inexperience. But you can't really say that they have functioning ways to address people without gender, because they all require specific circumstances and each one creates a different meaning depending on the gender it is used towards.

Not necessarily! My native language (Finnish) doesn't have gendered pronouns - just one word for third person singular and another for third person plural - and it works entirely fine. It's not like we're unable to tell whether a person is a boy or girl just because we don't make the he/she distinction, after all. Admittedly, it does present some additional steps you have to take when translating to and from English, but that's fairly minor.
