Adult Swim. The Mooninite bomb scare caused the CN head to step down, which gave rise to CN real, which pretty much sank the network. They finally fixed it with Adventure Time, but after nearly a decade of barely surviving, they're still too gun shy to try anything new. AT was successful, so keep going that way. Ironically, now AT has carte blanche and too much artistic freedom, which is what started Family Guy's decline.
This is very common knowledge. Seriously, is no one else here old enough to remember this? It was only in 2007.

In spite of an endless circlejerk over "tumblr" or "calarts" and the network's attempts to reboot old shows all being shit, the programming in general has been really strong in the last five years.
