I'm probably gonna get yelled at for this, but there was recently a new episode ofMy Little Pony: Friendship is Magicwhich began on a train. On this train were two male characters, one with an arm around the other. YouTube and tumblr immediately explodes talking about "the gay couple" and how progressive it is.
What is actually happening is that the characters are parodies of the two main characters of the movie Trains, Planes and Automobiles. When this was pointed out, many tumblrinos and YouTubers began damage control, with such mental gymnastics as "viewer interpretation overrides writer intent" and "they're gay if you want them to be!"
Why, it's almost as though these people are homosexuals and are insecure enough about it that they latch onto any excuse to feel validated and accepted....

Maybe, but it's accentuated by the fact that Poe doesn't really show such affection for any other character. He's charming with Finn, drives him out of the Order base to freedom, gives him his name, gives him his jacket, runs to him like a long-lost love etc. If he had similar flirtation with Rey, it'd be different, but they don't even meet. So there's nothing to balance it.
Similar to how so many people thought Elsa from Frozen must be a lesbian because she's not seen lusting after a man (she's mainly petrified with the fear of killing everyone she touches, so romance isn't on the forefront of her mind). She's not seen romantically cavorting with a woman either (no, the familial love doesn't count), she's just single - but a lot people took that to mean implied gay.
With Poe Dameron, he not only displays no interest in the opposite sex, but is shown being very affectionate towards a same sex person. So it's to be anticipated.
Also Oscar Isaac has been talking about how awesome it would be if Poe would be gay. But in any case it's all good fun and whatever happens I'll be interested to see the reactions

Even though I just posted a Korrasami pic, these two were my original OTP. They ruined Mako, Korra, and Bolin so Makorra could sail. I couldn't hate the characters because it felt so obviously forced via author bias. I was just relieved when their love square was finally done away with by Book 3.

From my point of view, I could never base my shipping tastes solely on the whims of writers. Especially writers of cartoons and comics since they tend to have several people with clashing opinions working together on the same project. "Canon" is essentially meaningless to me in that regard. Especially since most canon couples suck because they weren't developed properly beyond writers using their power to force two characters to fall in love just because they can. Every once in a while there are endgame couples that are actually fun and enjoyable but that's pretty rare in my experience.
Not to mention the fact that basing my happiness with a pairing on whether I believe they absolutely will be canon turns the whole show into a soap opera and make everything a lot less fun. For me anyway. I hate getting attached to "canon". It's pointless stress and potential heartache to put on myself. It sucks the fun out of everything, even if my ship "wins".

Another way they could bond is over Kristoff's background. He was raised by trolls, and they're the only other creatures shown to have magic in the movie. Unlike everyone else, he's not surprised by the sight of magic, so it's not like he'd reject her or have any reason to.
But he has been rejected by people ("people will beat you and curse you and cheat you") even though his interactions with Sven and with the trolls indicate that he's happy being loved and isn't just a loner, making him similar to Elsa's forced solitude while still longing for companionship. Both of them are wary of people getting too close but they enjoy what close friendships they do establish.
And both have had a fair amount of responsibility. Kristoff was an orphan who, though raised by trolls, had to outfit and feed himself when working with humans, while Elsa was royal heir and then queen. Compare that to Anna, who doesn't seem to have ANY duties, and it makes more sense that Kristoff and Elsa (both of whom are 21, compared to Anna's 18) would have more in common and be similar, personality wise.
