ITT: Animated movies and shows you forgot existed

I remember this being especially bad. The opening sequence had sea monsters attacking their boat in the middle of a terrible storm and the mother was encouraging the children to whistle a cheery tune to distract them from their surroundings. It just seemed like an excuse to shove in another musically number. It got worse from there.

Most anything from the past makes me feel nostalgic, but this movie just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It wasn't terrible, but just all around wierd and off-putting in a way to me as a child. Bizarre dark themes and tones. Assinine story, ugly, overstylized characters. I guess at least they were trying to do lots of wierd experimental things with animated movies back then.

>We dumb it down add terrible cartoony cliches and sappy songs so that adults hate it too

They're no longer religious. I need my grandma to stop fearmongering children, and this was my one idea.
>>
>>81534906

This was a bummer because the soundtrack was beautiful and animation was decent.
>>
I can't tell if this is this is gonna amount to a Doug Walker hate thread or a Warner Brothers hate thread
>>
>>81539582

Yeah the new series is different. The "Bible-Ness" is toned down so that it can air on more secular networks/channels. Also Phil Vischer basically lost VeggieTales/Big Idea after the Jonah Movie flopped. It's owned by a secular company now. (He still does the voices though)

It's a shame because VeggieTales was a nice balance of entertainment/Bible without being awkward.

It is being produced by Doug TenNapel (Earthworm Jim) so that's nice I guess.

I know these two are by Rankin/Bass but the animation studio that did Nausicaa also did this
These two were made by Topcraft before they would make their last movie and Studio Ghibli's first movie, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
And Topcraft was renamed Studio Ghibli and rarely does outsourcing jobs anymore. Nausicaa is only considered a Ghibli film because many Ghibli animators worked on it and Tokuma Shoten, the company which holds the copyrights for all of the Ghibli films until Spirited Away and holds their soundtrack copyrights.

>>81543941
I don't know much of Filmation but I know this movie because it was distributed by New World Pictures, the same hacks responsible for Warriors of the Wind, the heavily cut, altered and poorly dubbed version of Nausicaa.
I hated them until Disney got the North American copyrights and released the uncut version in both dubbed and subtitled forms.

I felt like it had a certain fairy tale consistency to it.
It was about two brothers with opposing goals: One wanted to make dreams come true, the other nightmares. Dinosaurs were a part of both brothers' plans. The movie does get scary, but that's to make the point that dinosaurs are scary to some people. And more importantly, that they don't have to be.
It's presented more dramatically, but it's not much different than the crocodile that ate Captain Hook's hand.
And I seem to recall that the villain saying that "with no one to scare, I become scared myself," and implied that scaring other people had been distracting the crows from wanting to eat him.

Butt Ugly Martians was very popular in the UK when I was growing up. I know American think it was shit because of it's sub-par animation, lousy writing and shitty voice acting, but when it aired in the UK it was during an era when cable/satellite television wasn't the norm in most British households. If you wanted to watch cartoons on a normal tv you had a short programming blocks to choose from that aired on two channels CBBC and CITV.

CBBC was the children's programming block of the BBC which is state run and therefore didn't have much of a budget and CITV (where B.U.M was the programming block of ITV which didn't produce it's own programming. It mostly popular programs that were on cable TV. For most kids B.U.M was the first 3D animated show they'd ever seen and even with it's lackluster production values, it still beat the shit out of most state made programming.

We got shit tons of merchandise. Toys, boardgames, video games, trading cards and B.U.M themed holiday resorts. The show was originally created by a British company and was quietly cancelled after it failed to take off in America.

I remember having this on VHS and always wanting to watch it. Something about the movie just perplexed me just from looking at the cover. I don't know what it was about the cover. Could've been the monkey, the King's bald head, or just about anything. I don't know why I didn't just fucking put the movie in the VCR instead of looking at the damn cover like an autistic kid over analyzing the plot of a Sonic the Hedgehog game.

Eventually I did watch the movie when I was like 9 or 10. Mfw it turned out to just be forgettable, boring, and just overall forgettable.

Skyland. saw this gem a while back and i loved it. It was surprisingly dark at some times (like there eas a water drilling robot that realised humans were 80 percent water, you can figure out what that means) but also some of the scenery and setpieces were breathtakingly amazing. I would definately recommend it. The animation is a bit clunky though

The old ones were fucked up too. Remember the rubber ducky one?
That story is based on the one where King David screws some married peasant, knocks her up, tries to get her husband to screw her when he comes back from war so he doesn't have to deal with a bastard son, and when her husband fails to seal the deal David gets pissed and sends him to the front line of the war.

This all transposed into a story where the woman is an inanimate rubber duck.

idk im 31 and i loved the shit about it because it was
1) dark and edgy (back then it was cool - every kid liked that) with spoopy tone
2) dinosaurs
3) that are both - sometimes scary (at the end) and sometimes cool (in the middle - especially when T-rex was using a fucking car as a SKATEBOARD!)

girl+boy love story was lame but most of the time it had nice details.
But i understand that younger people might not get it - its cartoony yet violent and scary at the end. may be you have to be a literal target group of this cartoon to like it
