I kind recommend against Neonomicon.
Read The Courtyard instead. Alan Moore did a Lovecraft 2-parter called The Courtyard, and it is FANTASTIC. Hits all the right notes for a Lovecraftian story. Really understands cosmic horror properly.
Neonomicon is his 4-part sequel to The Courtyard, and it's a pretty good argument for saying that he made The Courtyard great entirely by accident. There's no cosmic horror to Neonomicon, just rape with a big fish cock.

Lovecraft's horror always focused on recognizing how incredibly small humanity is on a cosmic scale. It's about recognizing human insignificance in the face of a vast and utterly alien universe. That's why Lovecraft characters keep going insane: because they realize everything they thought was so important doesn't matter, and everything they know is wrong.
Neonomicon is full of utterly mundane horror that has simply been dressed up in Call of Cthulhu costumes. It's visceral and shocking, and it's certainly horrifying in several ways, but it's crude, base, thoughtless, and very much not Lovecraft.

The problem with Neonomicon is that Lovecraft had very high-concept cosmic horror rooted in the insignificance of mankind in the universe, while Neonomicon has very crude, base horror rooted in the premise that cults are scary and so are fish dicks.
It uses Lovecraftian trappings but fails to achieve Lovecraftian themes.

To be fair, Moore's not alone here. Just about every modern interpretation of Innsmouth I've seen paints the Deep Ones as rapists with an impregnation fetish, despite the fact that this is contrary to Lovecraft's original story - in fact, he'd probably have found it *less* horrifying than the prospect of English stock willingly breeding with a "lesser" race.
Come to think of it, the depiction of Deep Ones as inhumanly strong motherfuckers falls into this category, too. Lovecraft's description of them hopping along in the climax of SoI seems to imply they're barely mobile out of the water at all.

Moore's point was that no other Lovecraftian writer had touched on the sexual and racist aspects of Lovecraft's stories. So he wrote a story centered entirely around those two elements.
...Of course, what he seems to have missed (which everyone else picked up on) is that the subtlety of those elements is what made them work.
