Jon has been dead for years. He couldn't handle his extreme depression, only having his cat to talk to and constant rejections by Liz.
She comes by and feeds Garfield and Odie on a regular basis, but doesn't want them running around in her own house unsupervised, especially since she sometimes has to take home some animals from her office.
Garfield has been hallucinating Jon's existence the whole time.

I don't blame Jim Davis for selling out.
His comic was never Peanuts or C&H tier or even Bloom County tier. At best it's on the same level as Dilbert. He took an inoffensive mildly enjoyable comic strip and turned into a multi-million dollar cash cow. Movies, Merch, books, TV-Shows, Posters for schoolteachers. Garfield has wormed its way into anything that would pay Jim Davis for its likeness.
Besides, if it wasn't for strips like Garfield, Blondie & Beetle Baily we wouldn't see how much better strips like Pearls Before Swine are in comparison.

I admit: i kinda like Garfield. I don't get that hateboner what everyone on the internet seems to have. It's not THAT bad, and 80s Garfield are pretty funny.
