Remember that Clark's identity as Superman is out. IIRC, that's not going to go away.
Clark, therefore, gives up his role as Superman.
But, out of seemingly nowhere, another Superman appears -- the pre-Flashpoint ones. I think Action Comics is the series based on how everyone deals with this. That is, that new52 Clark exists and is/was Superman, but now there's clearly a new guy who ISN'T New52 Clark but who IS Superman.

Unchained has it's problems, but yeah if "readable" is your only criteria, they do meet that. The villain was one of the same tier of stupid named, awful art/model work type that the Nu52 was littered with, particularly the Super Family titles (e.g. H'El).
And Morrison's Action run is more than "read"-able worthy.
